You have a wonderful new home, but there's a rider in the contract that says you have to display a blow-up of an album cover by São Paulo lounge lizards/progressive rock legends Pholhas over your fireplace. Big --- at least 36" by 36". Which do you choose?

1) Dead Faces (1973)

2) Forever (1974)

3) Hojas (1975)

4) Pholhas (1975)

5) Disco de Ouro (1977)

6) Pholhas (1977)

7) O Som Das Discoteques (1979)

8) Memories (1980)

9) Disco de Ouro, Volume II (It's not cheating! It's a subtley different shot!)

10) Pholhas (1982)

11) Wings (1984) ("What do I do with my hands?!")

12) The Night Before (1987)

13) Côrte Sem Lei (1988)

You know what? You're a bit off.

You're going with Disco de Ouro, aren't you?

I went with the dead faces, because it looks more like art and not like a photo of four strangers.

Me too, but I'm with soupy.

I had no idea Erik Estrada joined them in 1984.

All the way...not even close.

Côrte Sem Lei is least likely to give me nightmares.

I've never heard of this band.

Re: Pholhas

A single me given the same offer would probably choose #4. It's got a certain amiable wolfs-howling-at-the-moon-tee-shirt kitsch value, and strikes the right balance between goofy and disturbing.

But fuck it. I'm in a playing-with-heads kinda place these days. I flip the world the bird with #2. BIG.

I mostly like their star tiaras.

Re: Pholhas

The guy on the left seems to just be noticing that.

Re: Pholhas

Pholas definitely jumped the shark when they went to a quintet back in '80. They just didn't need a fifth hideous guy.

Re: Pholhas

That was brief, huh? If you're going to be in a band for one year, make sure you get on the cover of their second greatest hits package.

To all youse calling me a freak: the poll has seven votes. Get out of the closet.

Re: Pholhas

I can see the appeal of 4. They look more like Santana and less like a Menudo reunion.

Just noticed that "Night Before" uses leftovers from the "Wings" photoshoot 3 years earlier.

Re: Pholhas

The Wings wastebaskets intrigue me. Are they there just for balance or do they have a deeper meaning?

I went with #3. These Mexicans can grace my walls anytime.

Say what you will about the haircuts, or the clothes, or the other aesthetic choices: you can't fault them for their frugality; they get 13 album covers out of what seem like 7-8 shoots... they're like the Depression-Era-grandma of Brazilian lounge/prog-rock wanks.
