In progress on the National Mall.

My friend Michael post this on his Facebook page.

You look at it and take it in, but it's not immediately that you look at the people and the truck and realize the substantial scale of the thing.

The scaffolding makes him look as though he's in jail.

And that would be a totally appropriate way to present him.

What you see behind it, the columned structure, is the District of Columbia World War I Memorial, which is in horrible condition and is truly a national embarrassment. Did you know that there is no National World War I Memorial in Washington? It's disgraceful.

Re: MLK Memorial

I was in Kansas City in 2006 and saw a massive tower atop a hill with a huge eternal flame atop.

Our tour guide told is it was the national World War I memorial. I didn't know there was such a thing, and asked why in the heck it was in Kansas City. He told us that the folks then were just well-organized and got their project going, and then the depression hit and the other projects fell by the wayside.

So, KC was first, and they now host the National World War I Museum in the base. It was being renovated when we were there, but we got to see a little bit. Pretty cool.

Re: MLK Memorial

The Liberty Memorial in Kansas City does have the National World War I Museum. That doesn't negate the need for a National World War I Memorial in Washington.

I didn't say it did. Just said the KC memorial was really cool.

At this stage of its development, the MLK Memorial looks like an upright sphinx.
