Expectations of Eleven: Dillon Gee

Dillon Kyle Gee Pos: SP; BR-TR Born: 4/28/1986/1986 in in Cleburne, Texas (he'll be 25 in 2011), the day after the Mets completed a three-game sweep of the Cards and the most thundastruck April in their history. Dillon was born, and the season was in the bag. Acquired: Drafted by the Mets in the 21st round of the 2007 amateur draft. He later signed on June 10. Random Nickname off the Top of My Head: Chillin' Best Day in 2010: Dillon made his major league debut on September 7, a day marked as the first time in Mets history that they were simultaneously represented by and opposed by pitchers making their major league debuts. (Yunesky Maya went for the Nationals.) Did [crossout]Dillon[/crossout] Chillin' excel? Oh, yes, he did --- despite the presence of Mr. Met starting at second for the Mets --- taking a no-hitter into the sixth inning. He ended up giving up but two hits and one run. He also contributed a hit and an RBI of his own. Jerry pulled him after seven innings. 'Course he did. Last Word: Gee had an excellent September after a AAA season that was most noticeable for re-establishing his health. He remained a modest favorite to win a spot in the starting rotation this season until the acquisition of Chris Young. Now it's a dogfight. On Thursday, he will be playing firefighter. What do you expect of Dillon Gee in 2011?

Starts the year in AAA. Gets called up to make a start or two due to rainout/doubleheader/etc. Makes some starts after Capuano/Young get hurt but loses his rotation spot to Johan. Returns in September.

Starts in Buffalo. Around May-June, someone has a 2-3 start stint on the DL and he comes up and pitches pretty well, and sparks much debate about whether they should even let that Young/Capuano guy return from the DL. People get creative about 6-man rotations, long-men. Someone floats the idea of having Gee start, and Capuano finish the last 3-4 innings. He ultimately does return to Buffalo until September, when he pitches a couple of innings out of the pen, and gets the start Monday 9/26 (We clinch 9/25). Doesn't make the postseason roster, but obviously does get a ring. 1.2 WAR

Ceetar really is an optimistic Mets fan. As for Gee, let us not forget that he stunned the baseball world by being named Schaefer Mets Pitcher of the Month for September 2010. He was looking like the Mets fourth starter in 2011 until the signings of Capuano and Young pushed him to sixth. I also see him starting the year in Buffalo unless one of the five guys ahead of him suffers a spring-training injury. But there's so much iffiness (that's actually a word!) around the Mets starters that I think Gee will get a share of big league starts. My prediction: 8 starts, mostly in the second half of the year. He'll have an ERA of around 4.20 and he'll end the season as part of the conversation for the 2012 rotation.

When I think of Dillon Gee, I think of how The Second Spitter had an encounter with Mrs. Gee in Washington during a Mets/Nats game.

I'll go with 8 starts at this level, with a 4.50 ERA and a 1.35 WHIP.

Young righty with OK stuff and uncertain role on the team could be Brent Gaff of 1984. 3-2, 3.63 (99 ERA+), 47 games (all relief), 1.3 whip, career-ending shoulder injury.

Brent Gaff hadn't had the sweet success of September succulence in previous seasons. That and the injuries in upper level minors that he booted the previous season is what best defines this guy. I don't have a fair comparative. Walt Terrell in 1983 went 8-8 3.57. I say he does like that. 8-6, 21 games, 20 starts, one shutout, 133 2/3 innings pitched. Gets traded for Glen Johnson in the offseason.

pretty much what everyone else is saying. starts off the year as a AAA starter, putting up good, but not great numbers. Capuano goes down with a non arm injur, and gets called up. He does excellent against weaker oponents, but struggles with the better offensive teams. He continues to get his work until capuano comes back, making one extra start in between when young goes down with an injury and santana's comeback. In in late july, and niese experiences a 'deadarm' period, there's talk of bringing gee back up. After major players get traded away and after a 7 game losing streak, they bring Gee back up to give him an extended look. from there, he shows potential to be a solid back end rotation starter, including a complete game shutout. 14 gs 6-5 w-l 4.83 ERA 1.39 WHIP

His walk-and-strikeout numbers were weird-- weirdly high walks, weirdly low strikeouts-- during last year's homestretch. And that made his final ERA really weird.

Which is in the interview I linked to, as Dillon responds to a Verducci article that suggests he's a good bet to get hurt.
