Expectations of Eleven: Scott Hairston

For the first time in Expectations of Eleven history, we have to back up to cover a player signed in the offseason.

Scott Alexander Hairston

Pos: LF-CF-2B-RF; BR-TR

Born: 5/25/1980 in Fort Worth, Texas (he'll be 31 in 2011), as the Mets were being shut out by future-Hall of Famer Bert Blyleven.

Acquired: Signed as a free agent with the Mets on January 20, 2011

Wife: Jill, right.

Nickname: Hairball

Best Day in 2010: On May 7, Scott helped demolish the Astros with two homers. His OPS would be .966 at the end of the game and would never be that high again. A hamstring injury a week later was diagnosed as a strain, but his season never quite recovered.

Last Word: Fangraphs advocated for Hairston being an overlooked opportunity for a smart team, comparing him favorably to Matt Diaz.

What do you expect of Scott Hairston in 2011?

Re: Expectations of Eleven: Scott Hairston

I already compared a righthanded hitting reserve outfielder favorably to Matt Diaz: His name was Nick "Blinky" Evans.

I guess you could consider Hairston Bad News for the Nick Evans Fan Club. His ability to play CF is a bonus for sure.

Rico Brogna, 1996: 7/30/ .255/.318/.431 in 55 games/211 PA

Somehow I missed that the Mets ever signed this guy. This is the first I've heard of it.

Joe Orsulak 1993: .284 / .331 / .399 // .730

I went to high school with Joe Orsulak and Scott Hairston is no Joe Orsulak.

Hairston will Shuffle off to Buffalo with Teufel.

I expect Keith to refer to him as 'Jerry' at least once for every three days he's up with the big club.

Lost in the Chris Young shuffle. He'll be the fourth or fifth outfielder.

Thanks to Perfesser Debus, Lil' Hairy puts up a Shane Spencer 2000:

276 PA
9 HR
23 XBH
33 R
40 RBI
.282/.330/.460
.336 wOBA
4 SB/1 CS
1.6 WAR

Gets a bump in playing time after the Beltran trade.

I spent the first several days of his Met association certain he was Jerry Hairston.

I don't expect him to end up a long term part. minimal time in NY, minimal impact. maybe..25 AB, 5 hits, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 2BB .1 WAR

I expect he will make the team and be a let down in a lot of crucial spots off the bench.

Fans will be booing him by May 15th.

Something like this. He'll probably get some starts in rightfield against lefthanded pitching, and will see more action if Beltran and/or Bay gets moved later.

You mean once every three innings.

Re: Expectations of Eleven: Scott Hairston

his presence on the roster out of ST will cost N.Evans a job in the Mets org (Nick will have to get DFA'd to be sent down, and we'll lose him on waivers). Then, Hairston will suck continuously before a season-ending injury (of which he's had many) right after we trade Beltran. We'll end up playing a career IFer in RF (moving Pagan back to CF) and wishing we had a Nick Evans to plug in. Lack of production from a corner OF slot will cost us 5-6 games in the 2nd half, and we'll finish under .500.

for lack of a nail, a kingdom was lost... well, not a kingdom exactly. but a fair claim on mediocrity.

What would make this photo better would be if the photo of Scott and Jill behind Scott and JIll showed another photo of them on the wall behind them.

75 games. 200 plate appearances. 4 homers. .235 batting average.

It will be his only season as a Met, and by 2012 most fans will have forgotten him.

Re: Expectations of Eleven: Scott Hairston

starts off in flushing.
lack of quality at bats pushes him behind evans as the primary PH at the end of may.
by mid season, he's barely being played. He gets in a few starts when we have an injury at 2b, but it's only a few extra games, and he never finds a rhythm.
after some deadline moves, he gets few PH at bats, but not much more because the organization is trying to play their younger players.

55 games.
