The addition of Carlos Silva from the Cubs scrap heap added to the likes of Eric Chavez, Andruw Jones, Mark Prior, Kevin Millwood, Bartolo Colon, and Freddie Garcia (not all yet on the ML roster) I think brings the average age of that team to ... deceased.

Scott Kazmir Likely To Be Released
By Tim Dierkes [June 15, 2011 at 7:53am CST]
"It appears the Angels will have no choice but to release" lefty Scott Kazmir, writes Mike DiGiovanna of the L.A. Times. That would mean eating about $7MM in remaining salary, plus a $2.5MM buyout for 2012.

GM Tony Reagins was on hand to watch Kazmir's fifth rehab start, writes DiGiovanna, and it was the lefty's fourth ugly outing. Kazmir's recovery from back stiffness has been drawn out, as he attempts to regain his old form within the 30-day rehab window. Last year, Kazmir's 5.94 ERA was the worst in the American League among those with 150 innings. Kazmir led the American League in strikeouts in 2007 as a 23-year-old, but his work has gone downhill since.

Kazmir is still only 27, so don't count him out of baseball quite yet. Perhaps another fresh start will lead to him becoming a serviceable starter in time.

As for the August trade with the Rays, the Angels sent Sean Rodriguez, Alex Torres, and Matt Sweeney to Tampa Bay. Torres could be the gem of the deal, as he was ranked sixth among Rays prospects by Baseball America prior to the season.

I'd love to get him on a minor league deal and have him pitching in buffalo, and hopefully in citifield where he always belonged...

Re: Continuing Careers of Ex Mets - 2011

Of course no team is actually going to claim Kazmir on waivers because then they'd have to eat the sizable salary that remains (more than half the remaining $12mil for this season plus the $2.5mil buyout to get out of the $13.5 nut for 2012). He'll clear and then the Angels will release him at which point he'll probably have a decent choice of places to go for minimum wage tryouts and a shot at pen work.

On the other hand his 17.00+ ERA in the minors over 5 games (29 ER on 22 hits, 14 BBs, 6 HBPs in 15 IPs) doesn't hold too much promise at this point.

If Kazmir were smart he'd give up this season for lost and figure out what it would take to salvage his arm, assuming it's even salvageable. (He's not the only lefty ex-Met who should have gone that route.) Otherwise, give the Rays credit for buying low and selling high, and then move on.

Bad news from Vacationland:

Maine leaves Sky Sox after another rough start
June 22, 2011 | 4:19 pm | 2
By Jack Etkin
Frustrated at his repeated lack of performance, veteran pitcher John Maine left Triple-A Colorado Springs after a poor start Monday. He will decide whether to retire or continue trying to come back from shoulder surgery last year.

Maine gave up 10 hits and eight runs in 4 1/3 innings Monday against Tucson and threw a staggering 95 pitches, just 52 strikes, in his 11th start for the Sky Sox, a 9-6 loss. Maine is 1-3 with a 7.43 ERA and has 37 walks and 35 strikeouts in 46 innings.

After Monday’s game, Maine, 30, spoke with Sky Sox pitching coach Doug Linton. Maine would like to continue playing, but with the lack of results, felt he needed to get away from the game. For how long, remains to be seen.

Maine underwent arthroscopic shoulder surgery July 23 to have scar tissue cleaned out of his joint. Maine’s shoulder problems began when a bone spur developed in 2008. The Rockies signed Maine to a minor league contract in the offseason and brought him to big league spring training. The hope was Maine could build arm strength at Colorado Springs early in the season and give the Rockies pitching depth.

His contract stipulated he could leave the Colorado Rockies organization June 1 if he had an offer to pitch in the majors. That clause became moot as Maine was sidelined after a May 3 start until May 29 and continued to struggle.

D'Backs To Release Aaron Heilman
By Ben Nicholson-Smith [July 18, 2011 at 11:45pm CST]
The D'Backs will release Aaron Heilman, according to Jack Magruder of FOXSportsArizona.com (on Twitter). The 32-year-old, who signed a $2MM deal with with Arizona this January, is about to become a free agent once again.

Heilman posted a 6.88 ERA with 8.4 K/9, 2.8 BB/9 and a 38.5% ground ball rate in 35 1/3 innings of work this year. Bad luck may have contributed to an ugly ERA that was twice Heilman's xFIP of 3.44. He allowed a career-high .360 batting average on balls in play and a career-high 20% of fly balls against him left the yard. His average fastball velocity dipped from 92.3 mph in 2010 to 90.6 mph in 2011.

I guess if you're still playing at 51, you have a continuing career.

Tony Phillips, in the independent minors, goes mano a mano with fellow ex-Met Mike Marshall, also 51.

[youtube:mcjbpuzu]uiW97eEpMtE[/youtube:mcjbpuzu]

Marshall comes away filing battery charges, but good luck with that. He entered the field of play, approached Phillips in a fighter's posture, seemed to be leading with his left, and looks to have about eight inches and 50 pounds on him. Phillips landed the big blow, but you threw down first, Mike.

Nope.

heh heh

Feliciano's season appears to be over
NEW YORK -- The Yankees seem about ready to turn out the lights on Pedro Feliciano, with the left-hander's chances of pitching this season appearing dim.

Feliciano has been playing catch in Tampa, Fla., attempting to rehab a torn left shoulder capsule, but Yankees manager Joe Girardi is not optimistic.

"He's not doing much," Girardi said, adding that he believes Feliciano's return is unlikely.

Feliciano signed a two-year, $8 million contract with the Yankees after leading the Majors in relief outings in each of the last three seasons with the Mets.

If Feliciano requires surgery, he is expected to miss most -- if not all -- of 2012 as well.

Mike Jacobs busted

The Office of the Commissioner of Baseball announced today that Minor League first baseman Mike Jacobs of the Colorado Rockies organization has received a 50-game suspension after testing positive for Human Growth Hormone (hGH), a performance-enhancing substance, in violation of the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.

The suspension of Jacobs, who is currently with Triple-A Colorado Springs of the Pacific Coast League, is effective immediately.

Bad day for NY, losing not only Carp but Jason Vargas, who has had a serviceable career with Seattle, and Joe Smith, ditto for Cleveland, not to mention giving up fan fave Endy Chavez, and youngsters Ezequiel Carrera and Maikel Cleto, who are both unlikely to have impressive careers, but have both made it to the majors this season. All for a Putz. yikes. well, at least we got rid of Heilman in the deal. Apparently, we can now get him back if we want. which i'm sure we don't.

Good, day for Seattle, though, getting not only Carp and Vargas, but OFer Franklin Gutierrez, too, as well as later trading Cleto for Brendan Ryan.

It's a theory, but in reviewing, it looks like testing didn't begin until toward the end of the season. He probably wouldn't be subject to the minor league tests anyway, still living under a big-league contract and the terms of the MLBPA CBA.

I think the obvious reason for Perez's refusal is sufficient explanation.

Giants vs. Cubs: Carlos Beltran Hears "Boos" From Crowd

The transition to San Francisco has not been an easy one for Carlos Beltran since coming over in July. He drew the ire from the Giants faithful for hitting the disabled list with an injured wrist just a few days after joining the team and he has struggled to consistently play well since returning to the field.

It hit an all-time high on Wednesday night. After his fourth hitless at-bat of the night, the boo birds came out in pretty strong force at AT&T Park.

Going 0-for-4 with six runners left on base is never good for any player, but Beltran has been held to a higher level of scrutiny over the last few weeks. The man who was dubbed the savior of a struggling offense has been anything but that and is now hearing it from the fans.

The Giants currently trail the Cubs 5-2 in the eighth inning. A loss would be the team's third straight and would move them to six games back in the NL West.

Y'know, with Hairston out we could use a RH-hitting centerfielder, but I wonder about this:

The Marlins cut outfielder Mike Cameron late Monday night for conduct detrimental to the team. Two sources on Wednesday gave the reason: Cameron got into a verbal altercation with a flight attendant on the team's charter flight from Pittsburgh to Atlanta on Sunday.

The altercation did not turn physical, but the charter company filed a complaint. The Marlins' front office believed it could not keep Cameron after the incident. He wasn't in the team's longterm plans, anyway, and his release gives the Marlins a chance to give Bryan Peterson (.280) more at-bats over the final two weeks of the season. Cameron was hitting .238.

Re: Continuing Careers of Ex Mets - 2011

OK, with four teams left in the playoffs, lets see who will join the list of continuing careers of players that played in and won a World Series AFTER leaving the Mets. Some of these names were painful to type.

1964 Roger Craig
1965 Bob L. Miller
1967 Ed Bressoud, Jack Lamabe
1971 Bob Johnson, Bob L. Miller
1979 Tim Foli, John Milner
1980 Tug McGraw, Del Unser
1983 Benny Ayala, Jim Dwyer, Joe Nolan, Ken Singleton
1987 Juan Berenguer, Jeff Reardon
1988 Danny Heep, Tim Leary
1990 Randy Myers, Herm Winningham
1991 Rick Aguilera, Terry Leach, Junior Ortiz, Kevin Tapani, David West
1992 David Cone, Pat Tabler
1993 Tony Fernandez
1995 Charlie O'Brien, Alejandro Pena
1996 David Cone, Darryl Strawberry
1997 Bobby Bonilla, John Cangelosi
1998 David Cone
1999 David Cone, Darryl Strawberry
2000 David Cone, Jose Vizcaino
2002 Kevin Appier, Alex Ochoa
2005 Carl Everett, Timo Perez
2006 Braden Looper, Preston Wilson
2010 Guillermo Mota

I only counted those that played. The 90s featured an exMet in every World Series that decade. The 1997 Marlins had 9 players that had a continuing career of not playing in and winning a World Series by becoming Mets.

On the other hand he hasn't pitched much this year (16 innings) and I'm not sure if he's on the post-season roster (which can change from round to round).
Hunter's rules are that he's only counting those ex-Mets who play in the WS so we're going to have to stay tuned on guys like him and Santos.

Gonzalez firing on all cylinders since return

By JASON COSKREY
Staff writer
Dicky Gonzalez had just gotten a subpar year back on track when he went down on Aug. 24 with a right calf strain that some thought could keep him out for the rest of the regular season.

Not only did the Yomiuri Giants pitcher prove those fears to be unfounded, the right-hander looks like he hasn't missed a beat.

Gonzalez (3-3, 3.48 ERA) has resembled his old self since returning to the Giants rotation this month, which has to put a smile on manager Tatsunori Hara's face.

Gonzalez made an emphatic return on Oct. 9, tossing seven one-hit innings against the Chunichi Dragons at Nagoya Dome.

He delivered an encore on Saturday, denying the Dragons a chance to wrap up the league title with seven more innings of one-hit ball at Tokyo Dome.

In all, Gonzalez threw 14 innings against the probable Central League champions over the past two weeks and allowed no runs, two hits and just four baserunners.

"Right now, I feel 100 percent," Gonzalez said. "I feel like I did two years ago (when he was 15-2 with a 2.11 ERA). I'm hitting the spots anytime I want and I feel confident."

The Giants weren't sure they'd see Gonzalez this soon after his injury, as some initial reports said he'd possibly be out until the start of the Climax Series.

With Gonzalez beginning to round into form after a tough stretch to begin the year, losing him would've been a big blow to a team that needs all the starting pitching it can get.

Gonzalez also was unsure about his status initially, but he made up his mind to return before the end of the regular season.

"The doctors told me I was going to be out six to eight weeks," Gonzalez said. "That surprised me. The next day, I started walking, and I knew I was going to make it back.

"I just had patience and wanted to make sure I felt strong when I came back."

Gonzalez's return adds depth to a pitching staff led by lefty Tetsuya Utsumi and CL Rookie of the Year candidate Hirokazu Sawamura.

"I think when you see Sawamura, he's amazing," Gonzalez said. "And Utsumi is one of the best pitchers this year. I want to be between those guys. I want to help them. That's the way I feel right now.

"Maybe I didn't have a lot of opportunities this year, but whatever chances I get from now, I want to help them out."

The Giants wrapped up the final spot in the CL Climax Series with a victory on Sunday, meaning they'll face the Tokyo Yakult Swallows in the first stage either at home or on the road at Jingu Stadium.

Having pitched for the Swallows for four seasons before joining the Giants in 2009, Gonzalez will be in familiar surroundings no matter where the teams square off.

"They have a good team," Gonzalez said of the Swallows. "When they play at Jingu, they look stronger. We have to be careful.

"They're all my friends, but as soon as the clock hits 6 (p.m.), it's a different story. We have to play to win. I don't want to say we're not friends, but this is our job. . . .

"If we go over there, we're going to try to win. I feel like we have a chance."
