Mets' arbitration scorecard

The Mets had three arbitration-eligible players. Here's how it worked out at Tuesday's deadline to settle or exchange arbitration figures.

The sides can still settle before hearings, which take place in Feburary in Florida.

R.A. Dickey
2010 earnings: $572,865
Dickey's request: $4.7 million
Team's offer: $3.35 million
Eligible for free agency after the 2011 season, assuming 165 of 183 days are spent at major league active roster or DL.

Angel Pagan
2010 earnings: $1,662,500
Pagan's request: $4.2 million
Team's offer: $3.0625 million
Eligible for free agency after the 2012 season.

Mike Pelfrey
2010 earnings: $500,000
2011 salary: $3.925 million, with $50,000 in performance bonuses
Eligible for free agency after 2013 season.

Re: Arbitration Ledger

Not that we know quite how locked in they are, budget-wise, but would you go two years-eight million for Dickey and two years-nine million for Angel Pagan? Would they accept?

Seems to me that both retain some value even if they regress.

Re: Arbitration Ledger

Signing Angel to a 2-year pact doesn't buy you (or him) anything at this point (not FA until after 2012) but I would be inclined to do the Dickey deal and I think he would as well.

That said I suspect Sandy & co. are going to take a more cautious approach ... at least for now.

Sure it buys you something. It buys out any arbitration hassles next year. He may have a great year and be looking for ten million in 2012.

Re: Arbitration Ledger

Right now I'd predict they side with Dickey, and with the team for Angel. but that's just a guess.

I'd do two years for Dickey in a heartbeat at 4million.

I'd go to three for Pagan. His numbers with the Mets in 1000 AB suggest he's not that likely to suddenly suck. Whatever happens with Beltran, it'd still be nice to have Angel around.

It's extremely unlikely that Beltran will be a Met in 2012, so they need to start thinking of who their next center fielder will be. At this point, Pagan has to be the leading candidate, and probably will continue to be unless he falters and/or one of the young guys has a breakthrough year in the minors.

If the Mets can sign him for three years at a price they find reasonable, I think it would be a smart move.

Re: Arbitration Ledger

I'd do 2/8 and 2/9 (or 3/12) respectively in a heartbeat, and I think they'd both say yes. If the language in some of the late-season/offseason interviews is trustworthy evidence, both Dickey and Pagan seem at least moderately invested in the Mets as well.

Re: Arbitration Ledger

Dickey on board for two years, $7.5 million, with $300,000 guaranteed on a third-year option. Pretty damn close to the numbers we were throwing around.

So now it's Pagan. I think the two years, nine-ish millions still an option, but I don't think he bites at the three-year, $12 million alternative LWFS is proposing.

He's also worth more as a centerfielder than as a corner outfielder, and he probably wants to make sure he's being looked at as the former when they talk.

Pagan and Mets agree on a one year deal worth $3.5 million.

I don't remember... Is Pagan eligible for free agency after 2011? He may or may not play center field for the Mets this year, but if he's still around in 2012, the job is probably his.

He is arbitration eligible again next year and then can be a free agent in 2013.
