I hope he leaves that red glove in Houston. Boy the Astros really lost their way with that whole brick-colored scheme. They have got to bring back the spacesuit orange.

I agree. Florescent orange with camouflage.

In a so-called "do nothing" off-season, the Mets are adding a lot of players.

There might be a near-record number* of first-time Mets on the Opening Day roster.

*Excluding 1962, of course.

I hope I'm wrong, but I'm afraid the many signings are more quantity, rather than quality. Time will tell.

Re: Tim Byrdak

Well, yeah, they're definitely quantity. Hopefully enough of them will provide the quality needed for the team to be competitive. I'm both hopeful and doubtful.

Byrdak, I think, is the first new player this offseason to come along too late for him to take his alphabetical place in the Expectations of Eleven series.

Re: Tim Byrdak

The idea is certainly to get quality out of quantity --- the eggs-in-different-baskets thing. I'd certainly rather have three two-million-dollar players than one six-million-dollar one. That's probably true with a good GM or a not-so-good one.

We said that about RA Dickey last year, and we wound up catching lightning. The guys they're picking up all seem to be guys who can contribute, at least.

As long as one of either Byrdak or Tankersley shows positive signs in spring that carry over to the season, the Mets will be happy. I still wouldn't mind adding one or two more legit relievers, though.

Given that they have to reload the entire rest of the bullpen except Parnell and perhaps Carrasco (contract) and maybe Beato, I'd say yes. I don't think it's worth the effort of trying to find another LOOGY, who's basically going to be either slightly worse or slightly better than Byrdak for slight more or less money.

I certainly don't think there's any intention to "unload" Beato.

Re: Tim Byrdak

Certainly. But good relieving has been hard enough to come by that I think he's certainly earned a look.

And I'd never have said so even a month ago. He may have found something. Anytuck, I'm going to be watching him the rest of the way. He and Duda have been two of the only Mets worth watching the last two weeks.

not off the team, no. But there's plenty of speculation about him being a Bison.

Re: Tim Byrdak

Some speculation about him being made into a starter as well.
I think the Bison thing is just that they are allowed to send him down next year if the situation warrants where they could not do that this year without losing him.
