I bet Emaus gets a lower number if he makes the team.

And hopefully Mookie gets number 1 once Castillo leaves.

Won't Kaz Matsui be offended?

Now, conspiracy theory time..did Keith call up the Mets and bitch about this? Did someone else? Did they mistakenly give out 17 because the guys giving out the numbers might not be as well versed in Mets lore yet? They've had no qualms giving it to chum like Tatis, so why take it away unless... they're taking it away....forever?

I would vote "no" on retiring Keith's number, but of all the non-retired numbers, 17 is easily the most deserving. I'd start issuing number 8 to every journeyman who comes along. No way should Gary's number be retired. Sure, he's in the Hall, but he had one great year and one pretty good one as a Met, and three years of decline.

Yeah, I'm sure the new guy doesn't wanna make enemies among the Twittering defenders of fandom, whose practiced outrage was already kicking in. Plus I think that Keith's regard as a figure in Met history is only growing with his introduction to a new generation through TV, Seinfeld appearances, etc.

I am still not in favor of retiting 17 because it'd open up such a pandora's box, but perhaps they are getting the message to be gentle with it.

What about instead of just retiring 17, they wait a bit ,and retire it but make the 1 a microphone? (And hey, give the 7 a mustache while we're at it. Nothing wrong with being quirky.) After all, he's still contributing to the team.

And there were times the last couple of years where I thought he might've helped Mets hitters more than HoJo..

I find this one rather intriguing.

Is that what he wore last year?

Also, if you gave me ten guesses, I probably wouldn't have picked 43 for R.A. Dickey. Is that what he wore last year? I'm much less attentive to uniform numbers than I used to be. I still associate 43 with Jim McAndrew.

Maybe players have gotten more sophisticated since the days a case of beer would do the trick.

Izzy probably won't make the team but the 1995 Mets fan in me wants Bay to give him 44 immediately. Then again, I'd like to believe this is some kind of tribute to John Franco. Or Jerry DiPoto.

Or whatever number was vacant.

Re: New Uni Numbers

I believe I read Izzy make some remark about Franco when he took that number. I'd argue 44 has more significance for Izzy than Bay, seeing that Izzy took 44 so as to remind him (others) of his lowly draft round and has worn it everywhere he played (he in fact was assigned 29 initially but switched before having made an appearance). The Mets rolled out 44 for Bay because he wore it in Boston but had no equity for him prior to that.

I have a quiet, abiding affection for the 1995 Mets, particularly the 1995 SHaMs (h/t JCL). 44-31 after the break; 34-18 at the end, sweeps of all three division champs down the stretch, clinching a second-place tie (albeit in another time zone from the Braves) on the final day -- I listened to the crackly broadcast of the Phillies-Marlins game when I got home from Shea to celebrate that particular 21 Games Out accomplishment. They were my refresh button after the strike and the miserable first-half realization that at 25-44, they really, really sucked. Izzy was definitely at the heart of all that.

That second half kept my 0/5 streak alive. Starting in 1970 and running through 2005, I felt that every half-decade on the half-decade, I experienced some kind of elevation as a Mets fan, some sense of feeling my team in a new and deeper way. That streak, sad to say, ended in 2010.

In fact Bay wore 38 through all his years in Pittsburgh.

1999 was a fun year to be a Mets fan. The Billy Taylor trade, however, remains one of the all-time stinkers.

Izzy's greatest moment in Shea Stadium might have been the home run he served up to Beltran to end the Crash! Boom! Bang! 8-7 slugfest of August 22, 2006.

Greatest for us, anyway.

How very polite. How very Canadian.

Bay, who has worn the number since he was traded from the Pirates to the Red Sox at the trading deadline in 2008, said he is hoping to give the number to Jason Isringhausen if Isringhausen makes the team.

“I’ve tried to hit against him and I know how good he is,” Bay said. “I hope he makes it because he’s a great pitcher and he’ll make our team better. And if he does, I’m giving him the shirt. It’s his. I want him to have it.”

Re: New Uni Numbers

So Izzy gets 44 back from Bay, right?

What will Bay wear?

That's what I've been advocating. If you're Bay, hasn't 44 brought you enough grief? Besides, he needs to make a move to win the fans back, no better demonstration of "class" in the mind of Joe Lunchbucket than to give your number away.

Bay unofficially conceded the number back in February.

Re: New Uni Numbers

Not sure where I advocated for the hockey # , either of JCL's FB or MBTN....I liked the idea of 88, doubling 44 and Eric Lindors' #, but as someone pointed out over at MBTN with his concussions would Bay want a # associated so closely with a NHL played dogged by concussions most of his career?

Re: New Uni Numbers

From Rubin, pregame:

Izzy abandoned his idea to take Jason Bay's No. 44, which is the reliever's traditional number. Instead, Izzy is sticking with No. 45. Isringhausen said that while Bay was willing to turn over No. 44, it was not fair to disrupt him. The reliever added it would have been an unfair "hassle" for equipment manager Kevin Kierst too.

Disrupt Bay. Please.
