American Idol

Firstly I want to say I enjoyed the show but for fucks sake J-Lo and Steve Tyler you can't send everyone through....Randy needs to reassert his dawgness into these fools.

I think these three judges can work though , certainly IMO better choices than Kyra and Ellen DeGeneres.

Early standouts are the singing waitress with the husky voice , the 16 year old kid that was paralyzed as a child......still , enough with the sob stories ,and the last sob story kid form the Bronx didn't deserve to go through.

Re: American Idol

I can't believe we ended up watching this. Slow TV night, and no movies on hand.

That said, this season might well end up being one of the more entertaining ones in the series, if only in a car-wreck way. Steven Tyler, whose mental lantern has been wickless for a couple of decades now, around gaggles of short-skirted teens, scatting aimlessly or farting out creepy non-sequiturs whenever he damn well feels like it (there were a few cringeworthy moments-- like telling one 16-year-old her skirt was "just the right length"-- already)? Humorless J-Lo pretending to be good-humored? If Randy Jackson had a little less sangfroid in him and a little more suppressed rage, this would REALLY be spectacle worth watching.

Someone in our house may have teared up a little at the last Bronx kid. (HINT: It wasn't me, and it wasn't the ten-month old.)

Re: American Idol

I saw parts of it too, and it was awful.

I wouldn't worry about J-Lo's inability to reject just yet, I read somewhere that this year's competition will hack to the top 10 faster than previous years anyway, making these "audition" shows even more worthless than they already are.

Re: American Idol

I rarely watch AI but when I do it's these first few weeks of the auditions. I dig the horrible singers who think they are not horrible. FOX knows that about me.

I think Steven Tyler is awesome. He's funny and fucked-up and knows what he's looking for (I guess). J-Lo is a lot prettier than I ever thought. Maybe all these years seeing her standing next to the ugliest man in the world, Marc Anthony made her look ugly too. Don't know.

Randy's just an idiot and the fact that he's the last remaining original judge just makes him seem desperate with no other job offers.

All that being said - I thought they were an awesome hot mess.

I enjoy the show. It's harmless fluff, and some of these kids can actually sing, like that fat kid who was just on.

I've always been a big Steven Tyler nutswinger, but I honestly expected him to be a trainwreck. He's actually been pretty harmless, dirty old man tendencies last night aside.

But considering its cultural ubiquity, it's a little like never having had tap water or having listened to FM.

Step forward and collect your medal then.

I usually quit watching after the auditions are over, or very soon after that.

Re: American Idol

The thing that gets lost with some of these whackadoos is that first of all, they do really think they can sing. Then they sit in this arena with thousands of other people, then after they do a short audition, a lowly pre-judge tells them, "Okay, you're going through to the real judges." That has to seal the deal for them; they think they're honestly going to reach the promised land, even though they don't realize they're actually going through for humor value.

Then they get into the big room with the cameras and lights, and as soon as they open their mouths, Randy Jackson is giggling uncontrollably into his Coke™ and making fun of them. Realistically, I can see why some of them react the way they do.

I saw some of the guys the other night and had the same opinion of Tyler and Lopez. The one redeeming thing that show used to have was that when a singer needed to be told they weren't the shit, there was Simon. I really think this Reverse Chinese Mother thing the USA has going on is really revealed on this show.

Reverse Chinese Mother thing

i have absolutely no idea what this means.

But, yes, as to Pia's general hottitude.
And i like that JLo is way hot, too,
And i like that Tyler is a bit of a loose cannon, in terms of his vocabulary,
but the show does miss having a tell-it-like-it-is judge.
Randy is trying to fill that niche, but he doesn't really have his heart in it.

I'm rooting for the Seth Rogen dude. He's too cool for school.

Re: American Idol

Well, there's a fine line between tell-it-like-it-is and trying to upstage the contestants. Simon was douchey just to be douchey; he was rarely, if ever, actually constructive. Paula was unfailingly positive all the time, and Randy was too concerned about saying "dog" to ever have a point.

I like that the judging this year hasn't been snippy. They're actually giving constructive, supportive criticism where it's warranted.

A reference to the recent hot-button topic book by a Chinese-American mother which makes the case that American children are too coddled and should be pushed harder toward achievement like those in Asian cultures, yadda yadda.
The "reverse" effect here, I'm assuming, is meant to mean that the Simon-less AI judges panel isn't being frank enough whenever young singers truly suck.

I think I agree with her emphasizing effort and being careful not to attribute too much to innate abilites; basically outlawing having fun is another story.

Anyway the idol judges to me are forever dishing out bullshit platitudes is what I mean.

Re: American Idol

if i ever read or watched the news, i probably would've understood.
yeah, whatever.

Simon was a douche, but he was also mostly right. And you can be constructive and still be critical. I don't think Tyler or JLo are even TRYING to give constructive criticism. They're just like fist-pumping relatives. Randy is at least attempting some critique, however inarticulate or cliched. He uses the "karaoke" accusation often, so it becomes an eye-rolling parody of a critique, but his point is valid, when a singer is basically doing the song in a way that's similar to the original recording artist's version, but just less well, bringing nothing original to the interpretation. And when does someone cross the border from "old school" to a "lounge singer"? And what is "too Broadway"? Does it mean too theatrical in performance style? Or big belting vocal emotionalism? I don't want to hear those labels, i want to hear the reasoning behind them. Randy is now the only one likely to even attempt it, but that used to be Simon's job.
