I had just gotten back to my dorm from my morning Shakespeare class when the girl across the hall calls me into her room and says "Now, don't cry..."

where were you?

Re: 25 Years Ago Today

Landing at the Dayton Airport.
Got off the plane and was walking to pick up my rent-a-car and saw everyone huddled around TVs in the bar. That's when I saw what had happened.
I found it weird that I was in the city where the Wright Brothers had started it all.

Later

1986....certainly wasn't watching it live on TV in Ireland....would have been 4:38pm local time in Ireland so I would have been out of school ......more than likely I would have seen it on RTE 1 News at 6pm.....

Waiting for Val to check in to remind us he wasn't born yet.

I was in class as well; we, like the rest of educational America, watched it live.

At work, listening to WCBS-FM on the radio. Got the news from Ron Lundy, I think.

5th grade. We weren't watching live, but we were on our milk break in our class room when our teacher came in and told us the news.

We watched the coverage the rest of the day.

Re: 25 Years Ago Today

We had been studying the space program of late, too (rockets, reports on astronauts, etc.), because of the McAuliffe connection.

Working. Don't really remember how I first heard about it. Remember standing around talking about it but not how I found out.

Re: 25 Years Ago Today

I remember it snowed a little that morning because I was hoping school would be canceled and I could stay home to watch the launch.

My junior high school was not sophisticated to have things like TV's so we did not watch live. My science teacher made the announcement that the Challenger exploded at the beginning of class and we all sat in stunned silence. It turned out that one of my mother's co-workers was a cousin of Christa McAuliffe. The next shuttle mission in 1988 launched on the same day my grandmother died.

Hard to believe that 25 years have gone by especially since Alan Shepard's first space flight was only 25 years before the Challenger disaster.

And we're seemingly downgrading our human space flight ambitions every year.

Re: 25 Years Ago Today

I was in my final semester in law school, and was home in my apartment at the time. I saw the news on TV, and remained glued to the set.

It was an especially huge story in New England because of Christa McAuliffe. They were covering her flight preparations for months, so it seemed like a personal loss when she and the rest of the astronauts perished.

Was in my dorm room at the University of Missouri. Went to the Missourian newsroom because it seemed like the best place to be, and they had better televisions there than in my room.

The day before was the anniversary is the anniversary of the Apollo fire that killed three astronauts, including Roger Chaffee from here in Grand Rapids.

Re: 25 Years Ago Today

I was on my lunch break. I had met my wife to have a family portait done for a church directory. We were watching the Challenger mission on the television in the lounge of the photography studio.
