Wife: I don't think so, but I seem to recall his having a girlfriend who was an initial witness to Francisco Rodriguez's intrafamilal assault.

Random Nickname: "Hawkman," man.

Namesakes: None I can find.

Best Day in 2010: On June 10, Hawk threw a one-hit shutout of the San Diego Padres. It was only the second time in team history that a pitcher had thrown a complete game while pitching to as few as 28 batters (one above the minimum). It was the second game of a double-header, and really crucial for momentum purposes. The Mets had won four in a row at home before losing the first game of the doubleheader behind Johan Santana. That could have been a morale drain but Niese's shutout closed out the homestand perfectly, and the team went on the road and won the next seven. Niese also walked twice and scored in that game.

Last Word: He started 2010 as the number five starter. He starts 2011 as number three. He's got more than a shadow of a hope to be number one by this time next year.

What do you expect of Jon Niese in 2011?

Re: Expectations of Eleven: Jon Niese

Really faltered down the stretch, which probably was just a case of being young and hopefully wasn't an injury. I'm gonna err on the side of modest hopefulness and predict a Matlackian 1973:

14-16 , 205 K, 99 BB, 14 CG, 3.20 in 242 IP.

Maybe a little less on the IP + CGs.

Re: Expectations of Eleven: Jon Niese

I expect a pretty damn good year out of this guy. (although not good enough that the Mets will bother actually selling shirts/jerseys with his name on it)

16-9 (picks up a lot of wins early through some nice offense) 3.8 ERA. 190K, 210 IP, 2.4 WAR

That fact about his birthday will seem kind of depressing if it's brought up in the second half.

Nah. It'll make a great story piece that day. "When Jon Niese was born, 25 years ago today, the Mets won the World Series. Today the Mets have a chance to clinch an NL pennant over the World Champion Giants. "

If he needs help, Pedro Beato can warm up in the pen.

And if they need another day, Josh Thole can get 'em tomorrow.

edit: Actually, year st arts early this year and they've claimed they're going to cut out some of the playoff off days. they may indeed clinch the title on the 27th. might need to be a 4 game sweep though.

Re: Expectations of Eleven: Jon Niese

mediocre #5 starter, forced to be a #3 due to Santana's injury and lack of anyone better, at least gives us innings... right up until he blows out an elbow in late August.

ERA+ = 100 / 10 wins

The only game the Mets will be playing on October 27 is golf.

As for Niese: 12-10, 4.05 ERA. 30 starts.

Re: Expectations of Eleven: Jon Niese

13-13 4.35 ERA
pitches 190 innings.
1.44 whip
151 k's

stays in the rotation all year, until september, after a horrific august, the mets being out of the race, and he's hitting a ceiling on his innings (the 20% rule for young starters).

20% increase in innings would put him around 216 actually.

well, it's a combination of getting close to 216 AND him sucking, AND mets sucking.

Re: Expectations of Eleven: Jon Niese

Lefties develop later.
In his case, later than 2011. He has the stuff, now he must get some stamina to be able to emerge as a top left hander.
I expect a very Jon Matlackian type year, a game or two over .500 (maybe 13-12) with a good ERA.(3.56)

Not chopped liver.

Re: Expectations of Eleven: Jon Niese

Like another hook-nosed midwestern lefty here in New York at 24:

21-8, 3.87, an all-star appearance, second place in the Cy Young balloting, and even a few MVP votes.

Re: Expectations of Eleven: Jon Niese

11-11, 4.4 ERA only 157.1 IP. The injury may have dragged down his numbers at the end before he was shut down. His periferials actually improved though, despite the worse ERA. K/9 from 7.7 to 7.9 BB/9 from 3.2 to 2.5 .
