Expectations of Eleven: Angel Pagan

Angel Anthony Pagan Figueroa

Pos: cf, rf, lf; BS-TR.

Born: July 2, 1981 in Rio Piedras, P.R., a hotbead of baseball birthing. It was a sweltering summer with no baseball for me, and I had a family of less-than-perfectly-welcome British cousins staying with me, making it four of us in the attic bedroom with no air conditioner. Angel will be 29 in 2011.

Acquired: Traded by the Cubs to the Mets on January 5, 2008 for Corey Coles and Ryan Meyers, neither of whom yet knows what big-league coffee tastes like.

Wife: Windy.

Nickname: "Crazy Horse." I never heard that one either, but there it was at bb-ref.com. I associate that nickname with Tim Foli.

Namesakes: On the right:

Best Day in 2010: He did everything except win.

Last Word: He's set as the number two batter, but his defensive position (right? center?) is still up in the air.

What do you expect of Angel Pagan in 2011?

Re: Expectations of Eleven: Angel Pagan

I don't expect him to throw any one hit shutouts in San Diego, that's for sure.

I'm expecting an Angel Pagan 2010 outta this guy: 290/340/425 (108 OPS+), 11 HR, 69 RBI 37 SB etc etc etc

Re: Expectations of Eleven: Angel Pagan

Good year.

.294/.344/.441/.785 (his Mets career line) 40 SB. 12 HR

4WAR (hurt slightly by playing RF, not that that actually makes him worth less to the Mets)

Starting RF Opening Day. May be in CF regularly by Memorial Day.

How things have changed:

Expectations for 2010: that he'll learn to run to the right base and throw to the correct cut-off man.
Expectations for 2011: that he'll be the starting RF on opening day, play almost flawless defense, and be an integral part of the Mets offense.

That's what I figure, although he may get fewer AB's against left-handed pitching.

I also think his 2011 will be a lot like 2010, but I'll tinker with the numbers a little bit, just for the heck of it:

155 games (150 starts: 35 in right field, 115 in center) .280, 15 HR, 90 R 25 SB

Re: Expectations of Eleven: Angel Pagan

I think he'll listen to the folks who are wrting that when Beltran is traded (or leaves the team after the season), he will have a chance for the big bucks as the star centerfielder.
So, he will try to pad his stats in anticipation of the pay day in the sky.
He start putting a power swing on everything, take a ride on the grand funk railroad (thank yuh, thank yuh very much) and have numbers like: .255/ .270/ . 375. (20 2B, 6 3B, 9 HR in counting stats , for those of you who are counting.)
However, he may earn his first gold glove for his supurb play in center.

160 games
.294 BA
15 HR
40 SB

Beats out Shane Victorino for GG by playing an awesome centerfield once beltran's traded, and an incredible RF covering the ground of a CF to make up for beltran's knees - making more than one spectacular grab in mozone.

Re: Expectations of Eleven: Angel Pagan

I expect him to start the year in center, and Beltran sliding over to right. Collins knows that'll be the best defensive team to put out there.

12/75/.280. Not great, but good enough.

I don't have especially high hopes for this season, but I think Angel Pagan will be one of the bright spots. I'll even predict a Schaefer Player of the Month award for him, if we continue that tradition.

Re: Expectations of Eleven: Angel Pagan

He's built to be a center fielder; his defense historically suffers-- if only slightly-- when in the corners, as with a lot of natural "OF quarterbacks." That'll show in his UZR/WAR numbers a bit... but only a bit, since he won't be there all year.

Re: Expectations of Eleven: Angel Pagan

starts in RF and hits on a .285/10hr/25sb pace, until Beltran is traded.
Then gets moved to CF, starts overswinging and... wait for it... blows out his knee.

Re: Expectations of Eleven: Angel Pagan

Looks a bit like the pitcher and hitter are separated by a moat.
Come to think of it, that would be a pretty cool rules alternative.
