Expectations in Eleven: Armando Rodriguez

Armando Alberto de Jesus (Guzman) Rodriguez .

Pos: SP (RP also, but not since 2007); BR-TR.

Born: January 28, 1988 in San Cristobal, Dominican Republic. (He'll be 23 in 2011.)

Birth Context Karma: Nothing going on in Metland, but Muhammed Hosni Mubarak was dining at the White House. The next day, The Washington Post went with "Mubarak's Firm Line; At the White House Dinner, Egypt's President Speaks Out Against Israeli Policies." Perhaps we're a little over-worried about the next regine in Egypt being possibly hostile to Israel.

Acquired: Signed by the New York Mets as an amateur foreign free agent on June 6, 2007.

Number: 66

Wife: Unknown

Nickname: I don't know, but I'm sure he'll be compared to Benitez.

Namesakes:

Best Day in 2010: This must've been pretty good, as it helped get him named Pitcher of the Week.

Last Word: Somebody thinks he's the next Mejia. The main question this spring is whether he'll start with St. Lucie or Bingo, but with a power punchout arm, it isn't inconceiveable --- though it's certainly unlikely --- that he gets a few bullpen innings from the Mets this season.

What do you expect of Armando Rodriguez in 2011?

I expect this will be the last time I think about him until expectations in twelve.

A few bullpen innings, and some comparisons to Mejia.

This year I expect ... to find out who Armando Rodriguez is.
Or maybe I won't, who knows.

"Who?" was the first thing to spring to mind. So, limited expectations.

If it were Minaya, he'd be competing for that all-important "bridge to Franciso Rodriguez" role, presumably causing Parnell to be demoted again in the process.

But since Alderson is here, I expect him to start at St. Lucie, and possibly finish at Binghamton if things go well.

Re: Expectations in Eleven: Armando Rodriguez

He was pretty obscure after 2009 --- ranked somewhere in the 30s among Mets prospects --- but Omar liked him and he was the one who came up with the Mejia comparison, even though Rodriguez was two years older and still behind Jenrry. But his damn solid year with great so-bb numbers in the Sally League vindicated Omar to some extent, and he'd probably find himself somewhere in the 11-20 range now among Met hopefuls.

He's a big kid and that seemingly fed his durablity as he finished strong, but he's not getting any bigger and his fastball tops out at 93. He gets down low and drives foreward like Seaver, and Tom will tell you that's part of how you keep the ball down, but his motion seems more violent.

Up with the big club, but career suddenly in jeopardy after he's caught in bed with a with a tranny during a road trip.

Oh wait, that's the other A-Rod.

This guy rips it up in Buffalo and is the first guy they call when a spate of early-season rainouts puts a strain on the pitching staff and they need an extra arm. Warms up in the bullpen, but doesn't get into any games before he's sent down again. Until the next week.

In the end, he apes Orber Moreno of 2004:

3-1, 1 save, 3.38, 29/11 K/BB in 33 games/34.2 innings
