Beer Bowl

For the Super Bowl party I've been invited to this weekend I've been instructed to bring some "interesting beers." I thought I'd go thematic and try to find beers from the places where the teams are from. So my challenge is to find a good craft/microbrew from Pittsburgh (or Pennsylvania) and Green Bay (or Wisconsin) that's available for sale in Massachusetts. I'm thinking of going with Leinenkugel for the Packers and Victory for the Steelers. Do any of the beer experts here have any suggestions for something better or more appropriate? Anyone who suggests Miller or Rolling Rock will be shunned.

Can;t vouch for the quality of the suds but I associate Iron City with the Steelers. TransMonk would know the proper cheesehead beer.

That would be my first choice, but sadly it's not available in Massachusetts.

If you want to go superauthentic, you go Iron City (which is... um... not UNpisslike) and Titletown. Only Titletown's apparently difficult to find outside of Wisconsin. New Glarus Spotted Cow is a damn good cream ale from the area, if you can find it.

I'm not claiming to be an expert at all, but I love beer and I've sampled a pretty wide variety. Victory is a great choice. Their Hop Devil was one of the first IPAs I ever got into, it's grapefruit beer. If folks at the party might dig a wonderfully complex stout, their Storm King Imperial is my favorite (though I am in a huge porters & stouts phase right now so take that FWIW). Don't think Guinness, it's got a little hoppy punch up front but it finishes wonderfully smoky and roasted. Tons of flavor. (Nothing against Guinness BTW, just a different type of stout.)

Your hyperlink to Victory isn't correct. victorybeer.com

Troeg's is amazing. amazing. Iron City hasn't been good what I've had of it. They serve it in Bradenton, FL Pirates spring training home. the Penn Brewery in downtown Pittsburgh is great, one of the bartenders )as of 2006) is a Mets fan, but I don't think they sell there beer outside of Pittsburgh. Leinenkugel, while decent, is technically macro. But none of the micro's from there strike me [url]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wisconsin_breweries

I believe Leinenkugel is now a Miller product...although that's still technically a Wisco beer. My first choice would be Spotted Cow, but that is going to be mega-hard to find. Leinie's would be a fine choice to represent the state, IMO.

Great minds. Had that when I was nearby a few years back. Creamy, creamy delight. Ever have anything else from New Glarus?

I think of Pittsburgh beers, my first thought is Iron City. However, as others have stated, Iron City isn't very good. Leinenkugel makes several different beers that I have found to be pretty good. Never a bad assignment to be on a quest for beer. Best of luck with your search.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I didn't realize Troeg's was based in PA. I think I'll go with that. I doubt I can find any New Glarus but Leinie's should make a decent backup.

The local beer-snobs joint in town is featuring Stevens Point Special Lager and Penn Gold lager
