I'm gonna sprinkle some salt on the driveway in a little while.

Everyone's home safe; my only concern is a power failure.

I had to go to work. bleh. although it was better out, traction wise, than other storms, more water to get through though.

Car was a rock. took a long time to clean off.

overall, this storm was disappointing. I'd have liked that 8inches of snow mixed in with this mess.

around north jersey here walking wasn't too bad. thick coat of sleet, but it was wet enough from the rain that it mostly mush by 8am already.

We're here today -- to bring you the news! Got stuck in the street in the subdivision, so the son let me borrow his pick-up, which has four-wheel drive.

We got about 15 inches. Usually snow doesn't freak out people here, but this is a little more than usual.

just today to cover a court case for work. Turns out hearing was postponed, so I put on a suit and woke up early just to take a dump in a federal mens room.

The kids have a snow day, but D-Dad drove into work. He reports that the main roads down here aren't bad, but the driveway is incredibly slippery.

Stayed home yesterday and today.
Don't want to do another Evel Knevel impression.
Still achy anyhow from last week's accident, and I have a 100 foot driveway to scrape - uphill (My house is lower than the street). The guy came to plow most of yesterday's snow off it, but the freezing stuff covers it now. Should be loads of fun.

Re: Ice

Did my damnedest to get on a train and get in but the New Haven line of MetroNorth is a complete disaster.

We bought a 4 wheel drive truck last week to make certain that we could get out of the driveway on days like this (we are on a back lot and our driveway is about 75-80 yards from to the street) and I was able to get to the train station no problem. Unfortunately the MTA does not share my concern about getting to work.

Long story short - I'm home today.

cars with all wheel drive are the way to go. better fuel economy, handling and stopping characteristics, and awd is generally better than 4wd in adverse weather.

All up and down the whole [crossout:1mqqcqqy]creation[/crossout:1mqqcqqy], I mean, up and down the block, there are ladies out shoveling the driveway. I guess we all stayed home. It's only about 3 inches of sleet, but it's HEAVY!

All day long there have been men driving by with plows on their pickups or little Cats or some such, but do any of them stop to offer assistance? No.

My S-curved shovel, which I bought in 2002, gave up this morning under the weight of icy snow at the end of my driveway. It folded like Mariano did in 2001 WS Game 7.

I don't plan on using the truck as an everyday vehicle - just on those days when my (rear wheel drive) car can't do the job - which would be any day that someone spills a cup of ice on my driveway.

So far I dig the thing. It goes over and through everyhing that Ma Nature has thrown at me over the past week.

Thanks Ceetar :)

The icicle was hanging outside of my son's bedroom window, so the backdrop was the backyard.

Getting the camera to focus on the icicle rather than the yard took some work - I played around a lot with the ISO and shutter speed settings before being able to get a couple of reasonable shots.

Re: Ice

the other day i got a great drip shot (um, cue fman...) in fairly bright sunlight. shot up at the overhang in front of my door with my 200mm lens at a 100 ISO, with an exposure of 1/1000. i was getting the autofocus to grab the icicle regularly, but catching the drip was tricky.

Perfect Timing by twenny6point2, on Flickr

after i captured this, i bumped up the iso, quickened the exposure to 1/4000 i think, to get rid of the blur, but never managed to capture a droplet. then i think a cloud moved in. sigh.

It's a drop of water melting off of the icicle.
