It's Madonna who should be complaining about rip-offs. That song sounds incredibly like Express Yourself.

Re: All Purpose Grammy Awards Thread

I think it sounds like "Express Yourself," too. Can't decide if Gaga's the real deal or about to hit minute 16.

She's coming here next month. Ticket prices are obscene, which makes me think the clock is ticking, too, and she wants to cash in while she can.

That said, what the hell was Lenny Kravitz wearing?

And what he did with the old woman he got it from will be the next episode of Criminal Minds.

Checking the website, Paul McCartney won for his Citi Field concert CD.

Switchfoot's "Hello Hurricane" won, too. I love that CD.

It shouldn't be that hard.

I know there are million things wrong about Katy Perry. But, damn, she's got some good, disposable songs.

Though my kids go nuts when I change lyrics to "I kissed a squirrel and I liked it!"

I love Katy - she's my Treadmill Girl. Her songs were an integral part of my Marathon training.

Wow. I wouldn't have guessed that Jagger would be the highlight.

Re: All Purpose Grammy Awards Thread

I still take Dre/Em for performance of the evening.

Jagger was spirited and all, and the backing band kicked... but it would've been nice to get someone with a voice for the Burke tribute.

Also, it'll be nice to catch yet another Record of the Year next time I stop in at Marshall's or Filene's. (And at a nice, inobtrusive volume, too!)

It's that awful time of year isn't it , Super Bowl over, hockey is hockey even though I watched Bruins and Red wings today , soccer is on at 7:30 in the morning , Six Nations rugby is watched on the computer ......counting down the days for Spring Training ...but yeah the Grammy's are rubbish , didn't even show Gary Moore in the obit section...at least that I saw.

Re: All Purpose Grammy Awards Thread

The good:
1. Arcade Fire with a very deserving win for Album of the Year. (I was not enamored of their first song choice though).
2. Train, Lady Gaga, Muse and Eminem remembering to thank their fans.
3. Jagger was somewhere between "acceptable" and "pretty good."

The "eh:"
1. Eminem and Rhianna / Dr. Dre was interesting but ultimately uncompelling.
2. Lady Gaga. Nice performance but as every single person in America noticed, it wasn't exactly breaking new ground musically.
3. Dylan with Mumford and Sons/Avett Brothers. It didn't really work that well.

The bad:
1. Sound mixing. Need to remember to turn the vocals of the lead performer UP. Big problem for Dylan, Eminem and Muse.
2. People unable to perform their song without a gimmick.
3. The entire Cee Lo Green debacle, from playing to a backing track to Gwyneth Paltrow. Really? On the Grammies?

What he said. Watched our Netflix movies last night, and didn't feel like doing taxes.

No Guru from Gangstarr, either. And they got Ms. Marvelettes, so it's not like they weren't making "last-minute" edits.

It's a spectacle.

It's harmless.

Every so often there's a wonderful performance. Your mileage will vary vis-a-vis whether it outweighs the dreck.

People still actually watch the Grammies? They've been irrelevant since the 50s.

Exactly. I don't watch it for the awards -- and judging by the fact that they only actually broadcast a small number of awards -- the producers understand that, and just gave us live performances.

I don't want to make too much of it, but there is real harm in calling bad good and presenting it as the industry standard.

My son apparently is a big Bieber fan, which makes sense because last week he came home from school saying what sounded like beaver , then on a school trip Friday my wife says on the bus the kids started singing "Baby baby"....man , last night he was happy with the performance.....

The MTV music awards used to be fun years ago, back when it was a music channel, not sure if that show even exists now....

My initial comment was really about the volume of snark accompanying it. It's as if people are paying attention only for the opportunity to practice their lame David Letterman impressions all over your feed.

Right, but nobody except Clive Davis and the guy who updates the Grammy Wikipedia page actually cares who wins. We watch to see the performances and then make fun of them on Twitter.

My experience is that the industry cares a lot who wins, and moves to recruit artists who ape the winners.

Which explains all the Milli Vanilli knockoffs.

The industry moves to recruit artists who make money, not who win accolades.

Grammy-winning (and Grammy-appearing) artists garner exposure. Artists who garner exposure make money.

Re: All Purpose Grammy Awards Thread

A bonding moment with my 13-year old daughter, i not only watched the entire show, but also an hour of the red carpet pre-show with ryan semenlips.

i should win a fucking award.

Some random questions and thoughts:

- who elected Ozzie's daughter a fashion maven?
- why does Christina Aguilera seem to exist in a parallel universe with a population of 1?
- hey gaga, nanu nanu!
- whose going to drive Babs, Born Agin' Bob and Jagoff back to the senior center?
- Is Beiber fever like a mild form of Leukemia?
- As a singer, Rhianna is a great poll dancer
- why doesn't Eminem lighten the fuck up?
- that Auntie Smellum "hit" sounds like an insult to elevators everywhere
- Katy's grandmother was the only grammy she took home last night
- Seth Rogen had the only funny line of the night,
- In a song with CLo, Gwynny and some muppets, its hard to figure which of those things was not like the other
- Hey Minaj, Elsa Lanchester called... she wants her hair back
- i want to smack Seacrest with Gaga's dick;
- Did no one else think that following that Eminem number with Streisand's "evergreen" was a little... oh, i don't know.... like sticking a raging hard-on into a circular fan?
- I really wish that last band, Arcade fire, would die in one.
- For some reason, i think Miley Cyrus is a millimeter away from being just another cautionary tale. And not the funny kind.
- For an awards show, they give almost no awards. Doesn't that sort of piss off the only people in america who actually give a shit?
- that "jolene" number by Norah Jones, John Mayer and Nicole Kidman's husband was one of the best things on the show, along with that cool old school Bruno Mars medley he did with that androgenous stage-diving girl and the monocled rapper;
- now i know why i never watch this show.
