PM spam

This morning I got an email of a private message, went here couldn't it. Then I realized it was sent to an account on a previous user name "Johnny Dickshot"

I checked in under that name, saw the PM was sent as a reply to a thread in the archives ("Let's Go SHaMs!" in fact) and the message was .... a picture of a crane. Also an ad hyperlink I didn't click.

"Kingjones" was the user, I'm sure you guys have already flagged him. This is the first PM spam I ever got just curious if he hit the rest of the room.

Re: PM spam

Was this from the baby-blue colored archives, in the phpBB version 2?

I think maybe it's time we purged that stuff.

Those last two lines were links. I deactivated his or her account --- after following those links. You kow what a sucker I am for crane accessories.

Re: PM spam

The question is... which one of us put him in the Approved Posters pool?

My guess is that you don't have to be approved for posting to be approved for sending PMs. Maybe we need to find the toggle on that.

Re: PM spam

I didn't either.

Between tonight and another night I easily probably deleted more
than a thousand of these false registrants from the phpMyAdmin
side and I just changed a setting on the board admin side to re-
quire passwords to be more complex and include symbols.

The setting description was:
"Determines how complex a password needs to be when set or
altered, subsequent options include the previous ones."

Don't know if this will help, I'll keep an eye on it the next couple
of days.

Re: PM spam

Thanks for the heavy lifting. It takes a subtle eye to notice the one registrant in the haystack who just mieeeght be kosher, and sometimes I'm too weary to keep an eye out and I'm afriad I've vaporized one or two or three real registrants over time.

I'm going to search for a togglle that disallows PM-ing unless you're in the approved users group.

Re: PM spam

I accidentally nuked metsfanwife with my wide painting brush.
I did salvage someone like Mets4Life or something who was buried
in with the rabble ... haven't checked if that's someone who's posted
but it's more believable than say a ChumbaFang007.

Re: PM spam

I hope you didn't fix her yet because I deleted a hundred
more this morning (wow, a hundred in less that 12 hours)
and I didn't see her when doing it and she's still gone.

Sorry again.

Re: PM spam

I remember I had created a utility to make it easier for you to delete the spammers, but I looked at it recently and it seems to be missing the vast majority of them. I'll have to revisit that when I get a chance.

I got a message from sallyliao last night stating:

I am not confident in Castro's ability to take on a starting role.

Then a link to some place I didn't go.

Don't these bots know that we traded Castro some time ago?
