Expectations of Eleven: Chris Young

Christopher Ryan Young

Pos: SP; BR-TR.

Born: May 25, 1979 in Dallas, Texas. (He'll be 32 in 2011.)

Birth Context Karma: Such ambiguity! Young was born during the infamous "Fog Game" Joel Youngblood hits a routine fly ball lost in the mist that falls for a triple and rather than the Mets turning that into the winning run, the umps pull the plug.

Acquired: Signed as a Free Agent with the Mets, January 20, 2011, for a base salary of $1.1 million, plus incentives..

2010 Stats:

Number: 55. Fifty-five has been worn by three Mets pitchers --- Orel Hershiser, Shawn Estes, and early Pedro Feliciano. It's a debateable point who has served the number most well, but I'm going with Hershiser and hoping that Young ends all ambiguity.

Wife: Elizabeth Patrick, granddaughter of Lester Patrick, for whom the NHL's Patrick Division was named. That sort of blood gets you into Princeton, baby.

Nicknames: "CY" and "El Hombre Grande" go back to his Princetonian days.

Namesakes:

Best Day in 2010: That final day, five innings of shutout ball for the victory, had to be satisfying.

Last Word: Young is going to get either the fifth or the fourth slot in the Mets rotation, but how long he lasts will be a function of his health and his control. Having a history with the GM and the Mets not having a lot of options could give him a little bit o' rope, but Boof Bonser lurks. Ever lurking, he is.

What do you expect of Chris Young Wright in 2011?

25 Starts....150 IP 10 Wins...Comp 1.29 ERA 3.38

A pleasant surprise ala Dickey.

30 starts, 13 wins, 3.98 ERA. I have a pretty good feeling about him this year.

He'll become only the fifth Mets player with a surname beginning with the letter Y.

He won't approach Anthony Young's record.

I do kinda like him, but I'm not sure what to expect. 30/13/3.98 seems like a good gauge, but I'm not sure he gets quite 30 starts, and I think he might get hit a little harder in April as he settles in.

Maybe 25 starts 11-6, 4.11 ERA?

I keep thinking "Matt Young," so I expect he'll get called that a few times by Ralph Kiner.

Re: Expectations of Eleven: Chris Young

I'm fairly confident in Young's ability...but I'm weary of his health.

If he can make enough starts in the beginning of the year to bridge the gap until Johan returns, then I would be extrememly pleased.

I think he can win games and keep his ERA around 4. 20 starts, 134 IP, 10-6, 4.02 ERA

Pretty sweet assist numbers for a big man.

IIRC, he actually did average 3-4 assists per game in college (Triangle offense and all). Sweet outside shot for a big man, too.

I'll settle for-- and think we'll come close to getting-- something like a 2008 redux:

21 GS
123 IP
3.96 ERA
1.29 WHIP
4.75 xFIP
115 K
58 BB
~1.0 WAR

Re: Expectations of Eleven: Chris Young

He's the Comeback Player of the Year. 15-6, 3.37 ERA, 190 K in 185 IP. Delivers babies, rescues puppies, kills Qaddafi and Charlie Sheen calls him "bro."

Also, brings Emilio Estevez back into the public consciousness. FINALLY.

That's the Princeton offense, not the Triangle offense. In his 99-00 season (Ivy League champs under coach Bill Carmody):

.502 FG%, 13.5 Pts, 5.8 Rebounds, 3.35 Assists, 2.81 Blocks, 1.27 Steals average per game.

Of note: he also wore number 55 on the basketball court.

Re: Expectations of Eleven: Chris Young

Derp. Thought "Princeton," typed "Triangle." The crockpot of basketball offenses-- keeping things low and slow.

Carmody was running things, but they were still running Carril's O. And they didn't win the Ivies then. (Hurrah, hurrah Penn-syl-va-ni-a.)

I'd call it "so far so good."

I have a good feeling about Young and Capuano both.

I'm more concerned with Bay and Beltran.

I guess 108 pitches was more than enough? That's really not good.

I was kinda hoping he'd make it to May at least. geeze.

Hopefully it is what they say, just precautionary, and he'll make the start normally on Sunday.

It was pointed out by a FAFIF reader that 34 years after the Wednesday Night Massacre, the Mets' two most effective pitchers early this season have been Dickey and Young.

Ironically, Don Juan Carrasco could have been a great 10 PM-2 AM DJ name in Miami circa 1982.

Re: Expectations of Eleven: Chris Young

Terry on the FAN pre-game said it would most likely be Carrasco if it were to be a guy already with the club, but that there are still 3 games between now and Friday, so it's not official yet. He said it wouldn't be Gee, as he started yesterday, but he did mention Misch as an option from AAA.

Man, I can hear Jerrry all over that sort of ambiguity. "We've gotta get to that game first. I may need him in the eight inning tonight!"
