CPF Spring Training @ Strawberry's (attendance required)

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Feb 18 2011 08:12 AM

OK, the deets got mixed up with the Virgil's thing in the last thread, so this is the thread where you say if and how many you'll be bringing to the CPF Spring Training lunch at Strawberry's. We agreed to Sunday March 13, the Mets-Cardinals spring training game is to be broadcast that day at 1:10 pm.

Strawberry's is located right across the street from the Douglaston LIRR station, easy shot from the city or north via Throg's Neck.

Who's in?

My apologies for dropping the ball on my alleged coordination of this. Thanks for taking the reins. Count us in for four.

The next weekend would be better for me, because D-Dad could also make it. But I'm in solo for the 13th.

MIGHT be doing a YoungerPooper candleblowing that day. (It's 60-40 to be on Saturday at present, but...)

If not, it looks gorge-eous for a face-stuffing.

What's Straw's spring training capacity with the Mets if any?
Will he be in Florida? Anyone twatty with him?

Darryl is currently golfing against autism and spreading the good news according to his Facebook feed. Strawberry's Sports Grill reminds me that 10pm-11pm is POWER HOUR.

Last year, TMF, D-Dad, MK, and I met up in Trenton to watch the B-Mets play against the MFYAAs. No reason why we couldn't do that again.

Yeah, I know. Trenton. But it's worth the trip.

Hell would break loose on the fifth grade bus home. But such pre-adolescent madness did help me fill out my 1974 set.

I'll never forget the scrawny kid behind me who made the mistake of yelling, "I got a Pete Rose!" who, in a matter of seconds, had one-eighth of a Pete Rose.

That's how I came to build my complete 1975 set.

Re: CPF Spring Training @ Strawberry's (attendance required)

I remember flipping where the second person would have to match or "dematch" the first flip.

Here's how it would work: I'd walk up to you and say, "Flip ya Larries!" Since I called Larries, you'd have to go first. So you'd flip the card and it would spin to the ground, landing either face up or face down. You'd then say "Match" or "Dematch." If it's Match, my card has to land the same way yours did. If Dematch, the opposite. If I succeed, I keep both cards. If not, you do.

We'd also play Five Larries or Ten Larries, where each player would have a stack of five or ten cards. We'd then alternate putting a card down face up (like playing War) and if I placed a card down that had a color match to yours, I'd take the discard pile and put it at the bottom of my hand. First player to have all cards in his hands gets to keep them all. (Unless you called no keepsies.) Once again, whoever calls Larries gets the "home field advantage." If you don't have Larries, you have to go first in every round.

Re: CPF Spring Training @ Strawberry's (attendance required)

Never did the first style of flipping described by Grimm.

When someone told me "Flipya10cardlarries" it meant that we'd face one another with a stack of 10 cards which we'd "flip" -- put face up in the middle, one on top of the next until the "colors" matched, at which point the matcher wins the stack.

We also did a little bit of "scaling" cards. Throwing 10 each one by one toward a wall where the closest to the wall won. The skill in that game was to get a "waller" -- a card leaning against the wall, and/or to destroy your opponent's waller with a well-aimed takeout scale.

Sometimes we would "scale for farness" (I guess we weren't comfortable with the word "distance" then). I became so good at this* nobody would scale me for farness.

* - I can still kick your ass.

Re: CPF Spring Training @ Strawberry's (attendance required)

Sounds like what you called Flipya10cardlarries, we called "Ten Larries". (I never found out who "Larry" was.) We did scaling, too. I had forgotten about that. It was, as I recall, third in popularity behind the standard color-matching game and the match/dematch single-card game.

Re: CPF Spring Training @ Strawberry's (attendance required)

We did the color-matching game. I distinctly remember a severely beat-up Pedro Guerrero card that was something of an in-joke among us; it must have bounced around all of our hands at some point.

Hey-- she was warned not to speak ill of Dickey. She chose to ignore the warning. I would be remiss as a parent if I didn't follow through with the lesson about accountability. (I get a lot of that look these days; I blame the Philthy/terrorist facial hair stylings.)

Artie's presence may have made the lineup look better; her clubhouse presence was a little Milledge-cum-Everett by the end, though. That she made it that long was due entirely to tmf sneaking her fruit and croissants from the brunch buffet.

I see. My first impression was that you arrived at Darryl's immediately after the conclusion of your softball game, which you won for your team with a head-first slide into home plate.

Who is the person sitting between Mr 86 (looking ITBSOHL) and S-Fafif?
