Memories of John Maine

John Maine is Colorado-bound.

I still think we fleeced the Orioles. However, I'll never forget meeting him at a Willie Randolph charity event and being struck by how quiet and awkward he is.

A good ham despite his boyish face:

A greatly pitched game when we needed it most. Gave us all hope...until Glavine devastated us.

Game 161 should've meant more.

I think my favorite Maine memory was Game 6 of the NLCS in 2006, when he outdueled Chris Carpenter to force Game 7.

Remember(ing) the Maine:

Brilliant penultimate game - 2007; Habitual liar - 2010.

Re: Memories of John Maine

I enjoyed watching his rehab start with the B-Mets in Trenton last June. I thought he was on his way back instead of on his way out.

Best of luck John!

It's been a while since we've seen-- and it'll be a while, I s'pect, since we'll see-- a neck like that.

I was following the near-no-hitter while at East Zeeland High School, loving that the school had wi-fi and I could use my laptop. I really thought he was going to get that one.

The night he threw five pitches before getting hurt. Listened to the game on my way to the city for a concert.

Re: Memories of John Maine

He was a pretty crappy hitter, but his 2007 homer off of Ian Snell was the last by a Met pitcher until Johan took Matt Maloney of the Reds deep this season.

The one-hitter (shared with two relievers) was about as sublime and as draining as one of those near-misses could be. The sucking it up and delivering quality innings to start Game One vs. the Dodgers and Game Six vs. the Cardinals were, to use Bob Murphy's vernacular, courageous. The five-pitch exit interview was tough to fathom. John Maine made Jerry Manuel look good, for crissake.

His finest moment, literally, may have been the message pitch he threw Felipe Lopez to start the game in May 2008 the night after there had been some bad blood between Nelson Figueroa and the "softball girls" in the Nationals dugout. Some form of "retaliation" was in order and Maine calmly delivered it.

At a fantasy camp or some such post-career engagement, Maine will bring it up the way Keith and Ron bring up "the way it was done in my day," even though Maine's day is when they rarely take care of business so smoothly.

I'll also fondly recall Maine's utterly unlikely home run against the Pirates in July 2007. Talk about a shocker of the most delightful order.

I remember the time he hit Chase Utley twice (and almost a third if I recall) in the same game. Stay off the plate!

Swan Swan H went the way of Rod Barajas HRs after this game, looks like.

That game 161 was some kind of performance.

I will remember game 22 of 2010, this game, which turned out being Maine's last win as a Met. Fboy and I (and Kong76) were there freezing our asses off at Citi Field for some April day baseball and he was solid (6 IP, 4 H, 3 BB, 9 K).

Never looked all that happy but was a likable guy , had that game which at the end of the day will be a nice cherry on a sub .500 career

Leaves Flushing 23rd on the all-time Mets win list with 39. When Ed Lynch left town in 1986 with 38, that was a top-ten figure.

Finds himself in 23rd place also with 467 Metly strilkeouts, just behind Jack Fisher and just ahead of the Pedro Martinez. Whoah.

Re: Memories of John Maine

Was leading Dwight Gooden (7.78 K/9 inn.) in K/9 inn as a Met until his last two outings. Maine finishes with 7.75 K/9 inn. Am surprised that it was even this close.

I always liked Maine. I think the Mets got the best that John Maine had to offer, but I'm afraid his best is well behind him now. I wish him well.
