Showing Up Early

Has the idea of showing up early gotten a little out of control? I ask this because Terry Collins lightly whined about Luis Castillo showing up merely when he was told to and not earlier. Folks got on Ollie for not showing up early... until he did.

It seems like it's become fodder to use against guys you don't like, a way for other guys to suck up, and about anything but baseball. Camp starts when camp starts. It's not like guys who aren't early are, by definition, not working out. And camp is too long for reasons that have nothing to do with training anyhow.

I like getting early camp photos as much as the next guy, but when guys are demonized for not being there --- the NFL actually had to crack down on teams who were strong-arming guys into coming to "voluntary" mini-camps --- it becomes just another case of dressing an employee down for not wearing more than the minimum required amount of flair.

Re: Showing Up Early

It's crazy.

Even for guys hoping to win a job. Those jobs will be won based on the next 6 weeks or so, not on who has the best workout early in Feb.

Honestly, these guys are probably better off sneaking in tomorrow. While you can never avoid the firestorm, the other day roughly every beat writer had a handful of tweets and an article about Perez. Besides the "waah, why isn't he here" stuff about Castillo, once camp officially starts there will be less standing around talking about nothing. And none of it changes how anyone feels about the guy on 4/1.

Doesn't stop people like Michael Kay from criticizing K-Rod for coming to camp in a "Yellow" (It's white, and he had it last camp too) lambourgini.

Yeah, Collins should stfu. Kay would be a douchebag if K-Rod had walked to camp.

Re: Showing Up Early

I think I'd hate to play for Terry Collins. He has this bird-like energy, and I'm getting the feeling that he expects that from his players too. That would wear on my pretty quickly.

Not while the Mets are winning 96 games , it's when things go bad that it wears.

Yeah this whole who showed up early is bollox, I'm sure the players Union is against guys showing up early.

Oh, same here.

I don't think most baseball guys dance to my rhythm, though. I hope.

Positively, wired too tight for a long long season, for me.

One thing I'll never get on Luis Castillo for is not spending enough time in a Mets uniform.

What a fucking prick Heyman is , just downright nasty to link Castillo's brothers surgery to Luis not going to Walter Reed that time , who even thinks of shit like that?

Re: Showing Up Early

Heyman's all pissy because his leaky Mets sources are out of the loop, and probably out of the building, too; Heyman's days of out-scooping everybody on all things Mets are history*, and these Castillo tweets are the proof.

I don't understand why so much venom directed at Castillo.

*Unless Jeffy's Jon's source.**

I estimate that 80 per cent of it is due to that dropped pop fly at Yankee Stadium in 2009.

Re: Showing Up Early

it started the moment he signed that ridiculous contract, and they've been glomming onto anything remotely befitting the standard, 'his sucking must surely be related to and evidence of a serious character flaw' ever since.

Re: Showing Up Early

All of the above , the fact that he played more than good after the dropped ball meant nothing to the detractors.
