Klassik Rawk Championship II: Sign up

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Feb 18 2011 08:30 AM

Now that the Sitcom World Series is complete, I thought up another stupid Klassik Rawk game.

This one is a little more involved and works like this: Players take turns guessing at the Top 100 (or 50?) Classic Rock songs of all time as determined by a list kept by the quizmaster (a "legit" one to be determined, not some weird Clear Channel oldies format). Each correct answer garners "points" corresponding to its placement on the list with all guesses off the list getting 101 points (or 51 if we're only going top 50). We continue guessing by round in order until all songs are guessed, at which point the player with the lowest combined points total is crowned the new (or defending) CPF Classic Rock Champion.

Since FMan is the reigning CPFCR champ he is required to defend his belt. Others who want to join say so below and we'll determine an order and groundrules.

Re: Klassik Rawk Championship II: Sign up

Rules are, I have a list of classic rock songs, ranked 100 to 1.

When it's your turn, you guess one song that's on that list, with the goal of guessing those that are ranked the highest (i.e.: lowest on the countdown). All guesses in the top 100 get that number of points; all guesses not in the top 100 get 101 points. We'll go in turn (we'll draw for order then go up and down the list of contestants in rounds) until all 100 songs are guessed. Winner has the lowest point total.

For example -- not using actual rankings -- let's say edgy draws first and guesses "Stairway to Heaven" It's the top-ranked song. He gets 1 point.
Hahn Solo goes next and guesses "Bohemian Rhapsody" -- it's number 14, he gets 14 points. Irish guesses some Thin Lizzy song not on the list, he gets 101 points.

I figure it will take several rounds before we complete it, and if things get hard maybe we can give clues or something.

Re: Klassik Rawk Championship II: Sign up

You could award 100 points for the highest ranked song and 99 points for the second highest ranked, etc. (Score of each song = 101 minus rank).

This way is easier. The contestant with the highest score wins. And you won't have to add 101 pts. every time someone guesses incorrectly.

LOL

I think Batmag's plan for most points works too, I'd worry though that maybe if there are a few stumpers on this list everyone will be in negative territory.

This is like golf.

Re: Klassik Rawk Championship II: Sign up

If wrong answers are worth zero points, then you won't have to go to the trouble of calculating negative numbers.

OTOH, you might want to penalize wrong answers to maintain supense as the contest progresses. It's likely that the last remaining unsolved songs will be worth the least number of points: without penalties, the game might be clinched too soon.

It's your call.

Yeah, I think you should get 100 points for naming the #100 song --- as that would be most elusive --- and one point for naming the top song, as that is the most gettable.

Plus, then there are some decisions to make. Do I pick "Stairway" for the easy points? Or do I waste a pick on "Desperado"?

I have no idea what you guys are saying here.

My idea was low points wins:
1 for #1
100 for #100
101 for all not in the top 100

Is this a problem?

You guys are suggesting... what?

Re: Klassik Rawk Championship II: Sign up

Me and Edgy are each proposing a scoring system in which the contestant with the most points wins. Under my system, the top ranked song is worth 100 pts, and so on. Edgy's way, the 100th ranked song is worth 100 pts., because that song should be tougher to guess. Most pts. Wins.

We left it to you whether to penalize wrong answers (10 pt penalty, perhaps?).

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Feb 18 2011 02:48 PM
Re: Klassik Rawk Championship II: Sign up

Edgy's idea sort of works against the notion that the good players in this contest ought to be able to use their rock knowledge to deduce the 100th song after they see what comes in 70th, 80th, 90th etc. I'm not doing it that way.

I suppose we can give 100 for #1 and so on as you suggest. Is deducting 1 point per wrong answer the same as scoring 101 in the other system though? I am stupid.

It's not the same. Your way is weird (though workable) because all points, whether rewarded or penalized, move in the same direction (positive). It's theoretically possible for the competing scoring systems to crown different champions given the same guesses made by the contestants. I recommend that you award positive numbers for correct answers and deduct positive numbers (or award negative numbers) for wrong answers.

Also, a one point penalty will have a negligible effect on scoring since the total number of points awarded will be 5,050 (101 x 50). The real penalty will be the lost opportunity to score points for a correct song, rather than the proposd one point penalty deduction itself.

Re: Klassik Rawk Championship II: Sign up

Edgy's suggestion to award 100 pts. for the 100th song on the list might be fairer: that system neutralizes the random advantage one contestant might have over another by selecting first in a system that awards the most points for the songs atop the list.

I'm going to have a copy of a countdown list from a Name Brand Klassik Rawk radio station (I won't say the name or which list and no peeking in the meantime!)

Your job is to guess the songs on it until all 100 slots are filled.

I think filling in the top 10 should be worth something however, since that's what a champion ought to know. Yes there will be a few gimmees there, but I doubt they all get called in Round 1. What if we go:

1-10: 5 points
11-40: 2 points
41-70: 3 points
71-90: 4 points
91-100: 5 points

Or, how about we designate as many 5-pointers on the top of the list as there are contestants? That way everyone gets a theoretical shot at one in the first round, then proceed to 40/70/90 as above?
