OK, thanks to the input in the other thread and your signups, we are ready to begin the Klassik Rawk Championship Battle Royale 2011. Rules are as follows: When it's your turn, pick a song you think resides in the secret list of the Top 100 Classic Rock songs I have selected. We will pick in sequence until all 100 are selected at which point the player with the highest total points is crowned champion.

And the only one who knew the real Monopoly rules. Not the made up ones where you put a jackpot in the middle and the one who lands on free parking wins it. Did you know that you couldn't build your houses and hotels any old way you wanted to? There were rules for that, too! Rules for everything. I didn't cheat. They were just jealous of me 'cause I always won.

I propose a new penalty: 1/2 a point docked for every full hour that it takes the next guy up to put up an answer. That clock starts as soon as the guy on the clock answers.

I was surprised that "White Room" ranked so high. If Lunchie's list is anything like the countdowns I remember when I was a teen-ager,this contest ought to be full of surprises. I remember these countodowns as being somewhat predictable at the top 25 or so, and wildly unpredictable the further you get away from the very top songs.

I agree about going for layups. In fact, I think that I drew a short straw in getting the 2d draft spot. If I were drafting in a Strat-O-Matic league or drafting college football players, I'd want to draft first: the best 2 or 3 players are usually significantly better, or significantly more desirable than the next 10.

I don't think giving a precise cut-off date is the right way to be thinking about it. The source is a radio format (more precisely, popular choices within a format). The wikipedia definition is here, [url]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Classic_rock but I'd sooner look for guidance in what the list (about half done) suggests rather than what it's "supposed to" include.

I don't think there's an end date because each time the Rolling Stones or Robert Plant or some other artist considered Classic Rock releases a new recording that new recording is still considered Classic Rock. I'd say roughly 1980 is the cut-off date before which a band should have had some popularity to be considered Classic Rock, although the previous game that Lunchbucket had us play had a list which included U2 and R.E.M. so I guess the genre stretches out as time passes.

I don't think Under Pressure was that big of a hit, Stateside. Edgy and seawolf have both taken a hit for me. OE: You can also probably make the argument it doesn't fit "squarely" into the genre. Specifically, its opening and the fact some parts are sung in falsetto.

JMO, but "Under Pressure" was never as big a hit with "classic rock" formats as a half-dozen or more Bowie and/or Queen songs individually. Accounting for those facts, the gay thing (Mercury = 165% gay and that it's a "duet" with Bowie), the disco overtones, the falsetto, the scat ... so many non-CR elements, it's really a testament to how well it works that it appears at all.

Exactly. We know this is a New York-based radio station list now. I love "The Ocean." It's honestly my favorite Zeppelin song. I was only marginally aware of Zeppelin, outside of maybe two or three songs, when our bassist suggested we do two songs: "The Ocean" and "Over The Hills." They are both so much fun to play and sing (we also added "Thank You" to our set eventually) that they stand out among Zep songs for me.

The classic rock radio I listened to in 80's/90's had no problem playing Led Zeppelin's epics ("Stairway," "When The Levee Breaks," "Kashmir" et al), "American Pie", "Hey Jude," "Voodoo Chile," "Life's Been Good," "Layla" (with the piano solo), and numerous other songs that are more than twice as long as 3:30 minutes. I think what happened with Elton John is that he got slid over into the Soft Rock category.

Well, he helped that along with his later releases. But again, there's the aforementioned homophobia. Classick rawk fans may have been down with the whole outrageous subversion of the glam thing in 1974-1975, but, by 1980, they had collectively come to a silent but binding understanding to agree that it never happened.

Who doesn't have four picks that should surely be there? I have a list of 50 songs that should surely be there. I'd guarantee that if we could compare lists -- your four to my 50 -- that there'd be no compelling reason why your four picks would be any better than my any of my 50 and that assuming everyone here has a reasonably informed understanding of this genre of music, it's all down to luck and randomness from here on out.

I think that clues will make it virtually impossible for anyone more than nine, 10 points behind the leader to catch up. Those contestants must not only score to catch up, but hope that the leaders pick wrong for several rounds. They need several rounds to catch up. By speeding up this contest, you reduce their chances of winning. OTOH, I don't know how obscure or unlikely some of the remaining songs are, although just on sheer randomness, I would assume that some of the remaining songs might go un-guessed for a long time, without clues. So that's my somewhat uninformed opinion. What ... no pictures?

But yeah, LoaP is a real outlier - I was a bit surprised by the inclusion of WtSHNN but that at least has an epic-ish feel to it, and its arpeggio is kinda unique. Perhaps even to get U2 on the list, although something from War would have been far more likeable to the genre. But what exactly does LoaP bring to the table (that is, apart from the fact it was spammed by MTV)? Employment relations commentary? I'll take a wild guess that whoever concocted this list went to a Bon Jovi concert in the late 80's, nearly got laid, and included this song as a reminder of what could have been. Because they haven't been laid terribly often since then.

yup, or at least a version of it that's at least 95% accurate. i'll say no more. ... since my own level of expertise in the realm of classic rock is tapped, i decided to hunt around for another seemingly authoritative list, basically to jog my memory. i settled on some aol top 100 list. their #12 was ramble on. it was the highest-rated song on their list that's gone unmentioned here. fwiw, this list ignores the existence of bruce springsteen, and seems not to consider elton john, bon jovi, or billy joel to be in the genre either. or at least not at the head of the class. #11 on this list, wish you were here, is also not on our top 100. i'm pretty sure that we all could go out and find a top-100 list of our own, each from a seemingly authoritative source, and there's be a good chance that in each top ten, there's a song left out of another's top 100. yeah, this list didn't include the 4th-rated hey jude, so i'm probably fishing with the wrong bait here.

I've been noodling around with the Google over the last couple of days (more for comparison, as I've got my next few picks in with JCL already). I've found 1 or 2 I like a lot better, just because they're a lot more catholic with their criteria-- punk-rock, early R&B, and rockabilly are all welcome.

Guys, there's this album called Born to Run and "Jungleland" is the near ten-minute epic that closes it --- a gangland opera filled with mythological characters like "The Rat" and "Maximum Lawman." It's initially driven by delicate interplay between pianist Roy Bittan and short-time E Street Band-member Suki Lahav on violin, eventually descending/ascending/exploding into one of the most signature solos of Clarence Clemens' career. If anybody asks why only Clarence shares the sleeve of Born to Run with Springsteen, this is why. It's the track that made him.
