He's been in power for 42 years and has yet to achieve a standardized spelling of his name nor a passable moustache.

In the 1980's, when I first became aware of him, it was generally a K spelling... Khadafy, I think was most common.

The Q came later and then the G, if I'm remembering correctly.

I feel like I first remember it like that too, but with an "i"... "Khadafi."

Re: How do you spell Guh-DAH-fee?

NY Times goes with

Muammar el-Qaddafi

I think I would go with the K version and most definitely not the Irish Times version , which may well be taken from Reuters .

Yes. More specifically... I keep thinking of Fred Armisen's creepy Gene impression on SNL.

Moammar el-Qaddafi. It's the way I learned it as a kid (probably from the Paper of Record). Also, it's so exotic.

After 42 years you would think he would have been promoted from Colonel to General.

Back in the 80's, I liked to read Time magazine and they always spelled it Gaddafi. That spelling kind of stuck with me.

I'll have to try to find the Christmas cards he's sent me over the years to see how he himself spells it.

I think the SNL skit from many moons ago used a 'Q' as that was the pattern stitched onto the back pocket of Qaddafy Jeans

Re: How do you spell Guh-DAH-fee?

Since he spells his name Moammar El-Gadhafi, that's the correct form.
