Kindle or Nook?

Help!

My father-in-law wants to buy one of these for my mother-in-law, and he's got some health issues so I've been put in charge of researching this. I know, an iPad is better. But that's not one of the options.

Mom is 70 with moderate tech skills. Ideally, something would have a calendar or other functions in addition to being a reader. I know, the iPad...

There are some vision issues, and the ability to make type larger would be a plus.

Does anyone have one of these? Recommendations?

Thanks for the help!

Re: Kindle or Nook?

I have neither but I want one or the other , my research has me wanting the Kindle because it's the best reader , the iPad is not a good reader, the Nook is getting better and is now powered with an Android OS so it has that added tech component .

If you want a reader plus some other things then it's the Nook.

Re: Kindle or Nook?

My wife, the librarian, is highly pro-Nook. She has a laundry list of reasons, but it's mostly because the Nook allows her to get free books from the library while the Kindle is proprietary to Amazon. She's had it since Christmas and hasn't bought a book yet; all free, baby.

I have the Nook also, the low end e-ink one that is WiFi only (retail $150). I enjoy it. Couldn't tell you what other features is has but as a reader, it's top notch. You can increase the font for your readers who need or want larger type and yes, you can get library books on it with a little cajoling.

I bought a small reading light (BestBuy) and a rubber protective case (Overstock.com), cut a slit in the top of it with an exacto knife and it's the perfect bedside reader.

Re: Kindle or Nook?

I received the NOOK WiFi for Christmas and I really like it. I can read any book for free when in a Barnes and Noble which is nice. I can loan my eBooks to other NOOk readers and borrow books from them. As Seawolf pointed out, there is a large selection of free books available as well.

I have friends that have Kindle's and they seem quite happy as well. In the end, i think the two are quite similar in their abilities and features. It seems that whenever one of the adds a new feature the other soon adds it to their reader.

The library borrowing thing is a strong incentive. Adaptability to bedside reading would be a must for me.

Re: Kindle or Nook?

Kindle has a larger selection and also has the lending option.

Basically, however, they have such similar features that for your mother-in-law it doesn't really matter much between the two.

Re: Kindle or Nook?

Does the Kindle have an OS?, a new Nook will be running the latest Android OS.

I'm still not tempted to switch to eBooks. (The day may come eventually, but I'm not there yet.)

I'm waiting for foldable e-readers that you can put in your pocket.

Re: Kindle or Nook?

They don't fold but I find that a Kindle can fit into pants or jacket pockets.

Re: Kindle or Nook?

We got Mom the color Nook, and she loved it! We bought her a router, too, so she could do more with the Nook (and so I could use my laptop at her house, but we don't emphasize that part.)

Thank you all for the advice!

Re: Kindle or Nook?

You give them their email address and it is "sent" to them. If they accept, then it leaves your kindle for two weeks and after that time returns to your kindle.

Great news , starting September 21st you can get e-books for Kindle from your local library.

Amazon Announcement

You need a valid library card, and one thing to remember, just like a real book there will be holds on e-books too.

I love mine, got it for father's Day. Kindle 4 is rumored to be coming soon, or next year or whatever, forums are awash with details, it is likely to be a tablet PC than an eBook device with a colored touch screen running Android....again, all rumors , likely to be expensive.....the Kindle 3 will still be great.

I just got my first e-book out form the NYPL.....a Nelson DeMille classic.

I think Bergen County's library does the ebooks, so I'll have to look at that.

Actually, I still have a Manhattan library account too.

Why would I want a 'Kindle 4' instead of say an actual Tablet running Android with the Kindle app?

Because it'll have much of the functionality at a fraction of the cost is what I hear.

I read more on paper than on e-readers by a factor of about 3-to-1.

I personally don't care for the whole iPad killer talk and like to take these things on their own merit, so far I like it and look forward to seeing it in action, reviews etc.
