Double IGT, 3/8
Edgy DC Mar 08 2011 08:26 AM |
In one of the lesser-known Mets spring traditions, March 8 is traditionally designated as DH-the-Fourth-String-Catcher-Candidates Day

Nats game is on SNY, other one on Astros radio.

TransMonk Mar 08 2011 08:32 AM Re: Double IGT, 3/8 |
Terry and Sandy are travelling to see Ollie pitch.
bmfc1 Mar 08 2011 08:32 AM Re: Double IGT, 3/8 |
I think that we are going to be seeing a lot of Scott Hairston in RF this season.
Edgy DC Mar 08 2011 08:40 AM Re: Double IGT, 3/8 |
Well, we're seeing him in centerfield today, which suggests that they're not looking to even fake it with Martinez there.

Benjamin Grimm Mar 08 2011 08:44 AM Re: Double IGT, 3/8 |
If Beltran can't answer the bell, then maybe it's Fernando's time to shine.
Ceetar Mar 08 2011 08:48 AM Re: Double IGT, 3/8 |
Actually, i amend my statement, it looks like the game in Kissimmee might be on the radio. I'll tune in and can hear the Astro's announcers impression of Ollie..
Benjamin Grimm Mar 08 2011 08:49 AM Re: Double IGT, 3/8 |
They also do a good impression of Cary Grant.
Edgy DC Mar 08 2011 09:00 AM Re: Double IGT, 3/8 |
It seems like the Astros have been in Kissimmee forever, but it's been like 27 years.

Rubin rather smugly says this is Ollies last time in a Mets uniform.

Can Ollie play RF?
Ceetar Mar 08 2011 09:09 AM Re: Double IGT, 3/8 |
The main theme there being that Collins and Alderson are not being open and honest with Ollie, and that he doesn't actually have a chance to win the rotation spot even if he throws 4 innings with 12 Ks at 95mph today. You have to wonder why they're bothering to watch then.
Edgy DC Mar 08 2011 09:13 AM Re: Double IGT, 3/8 |
Come on. There is no evidence of anybody being dishonest. It's been reported all weekend that this is expected to be Perez's last start and that Collins sees his primary opportunity to make the team as the bullpen.
Ceetar Mar 08 2011 09:18 AM Re: Double IGT, 3/8 |
that's contradictory in it of itself. If he's trying to make the team as a starter, what he does today matters. If today was going to be his last start no matter what, then he's not actually auditioning to be a starter. I know it was always extremely likely and it seemed like Collins told Perez "I'll give you a shot, show me something" and that he hasn't to this point. But to 'report' things as a done deal before it actually happens annoys me.
batmagadanleadoff Mar 08 2011 09:19 AM Re: Double IGT, 3/8 |
I'd bet everything that if Ollie threw "4 innings with 12 Ks at 95mph", he'd climb the depth charts. If my mother threw "4 innings with 12 Ks at 95mph", she'd move up the Mets depth charts.
Edgy DC Mar 08 2011 09:21 AM Re: Double IGT, 3/8 |
No, it's not contradictory. I think you're kind of conflating Rubin with Alderson here.
batmagadanleadoff Mar 08 2011 09:34 AM Re: Double IGT, 3/8 |
Ollie's throwing 84 MPH High School fastballs. He seems done. He's only auditioning because of his $12M contract. What would you prefer the Mets do with him?
Ceetar Mar 08 2011 09:43 AM Re: Double IGT, 3/8 |
leaving the varying degree of fastball out of it, because every report mentions a different number for every start and if he was competant he's got the movement on those pitches to get guys out regardless. I want them to give him a chance to prove he can make the team, up until they need those innings for the serious races. I don't want him to audition as a lefty specialist because the biggest thing keeping him from being successful is also what's going to make it even worse as a reliever. Walks, and not accepting that walks are the worst thing ever. If there isn't a chance he's going to be effective, release him. Why pretend he's auditioning for anything today? Because he _is_. It's probably a .5% chance he earns anything, but it annoys me that people are reporting that it's basically a done deal and yet are all pumped up to give us constant updates as to his status and results. If it's a done deal, I don't need to hear that he threw a ball on a 2-0 count in the second inning do I?
Edgy DC Mar 08 2011 11:07 AM Re: Double IGT, 3/8 |
Well, Rubin will predict what he wants. Part of the goal of columnists (and internet posters) is to predict things before they happen. I don't know how we get from there to Collins and Alderson being dishonest.

Meanwhile, at St. Lucie, Capuano having many chances to test his awesome pickoff move.
bmfc1 Mar 08 2011 11:31 AM Re: Double IGT, 3/8 |
3 in the 1st against Ollie before getting an out. Had enough?
G-Fafif Mar 08 2011 11:31 AM Re: Double IGT, 3/8 |
OK, he heard me and stopped putting on Nationals.
G-Fafif Mar 08 2011 11:32 AM Re: Double IGT, 3/8 |
Space Coast Stadium should be shaped like Jeannie's bottle. You'd have to bunt a lot, though.

Old buddy Nelson Figueroa and his enormous eyebrows dealing for Houston.
Ceetar Mar 08 2011 12:04 PM Re: Double IGT, 3/8 |
Presumably that's it for Ollie. Mostly bad, although doesn't look so bad after the first four batters. did he adjust? (probably not)
Edgy DC Mar 08 2011 12:05 PM Re: Double IGT, 3/8 |
A double and an unintentional intentional walk in the third before Ollie gets out of it.
Ceetar Mar 08 2011 12:12 PM Re: Double IGT, 3/8 |
Rich Coutino said he was averaging 85-88 according to scouts, although the Houston guy said he was peaking at a scouts gun and saw 90, so who knows. I agree with that assessment though, bad but not bad enough. one of those outs was caught at the top of the wall by Duda. Announcers said he was still at 89mph in the third. I wonder if my phone has a speed gun app that I can bring down there next week..

Edgy DC Mar 08 2011 12:33 PM Re: Double IGT, 3/8 |
Ollie rival Pat Misch giving up runs in consecutive innings (one unearned) and the Astros up 5-1.
Edgy DC Mar 08 2011 01:04 PM Re: Double IGT, 3/8 |
The Class of 2008 gives us a run in St. Lucie. Two-out double by Daniel Murphy and Nick Evans singles him home. Nats 2, Mets 1.
Ceetar Mar 08 2011 01:06 PM Re: Double IGT, 3/8 |

meanwhile Emaus and whoever's in RF now misplay a popup for an infield single. Murphy may be in the lead in that race.
Benjamin Grimm Mar 08 2011 01:09 PM Re: Double IGT, 3/8 |
I haven't seen any of the games yet, but I'm getting the sense that Emaus hasn't been looking too good out in the field. Is that accurate?
Edgy DC Mar 08 2011 01:24 PM Re: Double IGT, 3/8 |
Michael O'Connor entered with second and third, two one out and Rick Ankiel coming up. He struck him out, just like a LOOGy ought to do.
Ceetar Mar 08 2011 01:25 PM Re: Double IGT, 3/8 |

Made a 'real' error earlier today too. That's been my impression as well, but I haven't watched much either. more listening. I don't think Turner, Murphy or even Castillo have looked great either defensively though.

Can Ollies contract be sold to Japan at a nominal price?
Gwreck Mar 08 2011 01:43 PM Re: Double IGT, 3/8 |
Emaus looked bad when I saw him in person on Saturday, with a couple of mis-plays that weren't errors in your boxscore.
LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Mar 08 2011 01:45 PM Re: Double IGT, 3/8 |

Valdespin, on the other hand... Plus, the kid's looked half-decent at the plate, too-- a triple and single today in two AB.
Ceetar Mar 08 2011 01:47 PM Re: Double IGT, 3/8 |
Yeah, Valdespin has been a nice surprise, but he's a long shot candidate as it is right? would be surprised with 6million here, rule 5 there, that he makes the team.
bmfc1 Mar 08 2011 01:54 PM Re: Double IGT, 3/8 |
What a bomb by Cory Vaughn--ties the home game.
LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Mar 08 2011 01:57 PM Re: Double IGT, 3/8 |
Yeah, Valdespin's probably headed to more northerly precincts to do his thing while the Mets get a longer look at Emaus and whoever joins him at the Citi keystone. Interesting idea for the future, though... maybe as soon as later this year.
Benjamin Grimm Mar 08 2011 02:02 PM Re: Double IGT, 3/8 |
Can Valdespin play shortstop?
Edgy DC Mar 08 2011 02:06 PM Re: Double IGT, 3/8 |
Yes, but he's not projected there currently. He's got 47 games there in his career vs. 175 at second.
Ceetar Mar 08 2011 02:08 PM Re: Double IGT, 3/8 |

23 games last year. 47 overall (17 errors though) so probably. Got promoted to Binghamton late last year. so only 23 games above A right now.
Edgy DC Mar 08 2011 02:19 PM Re: Double IGT, 3/8 |
A late rally in Kissimmeedeadly, also, with two in the eighth:
Edgy DC Mar 08 2011 02:25 PM Re: Double IGT, 3/8 |
We lose in St. Lucie also, as Met I've never heard of Dale Thayer comes on for the tenth and gives up a run, which the Mets are unable to answer.
Edgy DC Mar 08 2011 09:13 PM Re: Double IGT, 3/8 |
This afternoon's version of the Astros were managed by sexy-exy Met Al Pedrique.

He went to Chico State. I'm wondering if he is the first, or only, major leaguer to come from that school. Later
Edgy DC Mar 09 2011 05:13 AM Re: Double IGT, 3/8 |
No way. There was Chico Carrasquel, Chico Walker... Matt Chico. Lots of others, I'm sure.

A number of draftees, but no major leaguers yet.
Edgy DC Mar 09 2011 07:33 AM Re: Double IGT, 3/8 |
Sure, there's been Thayer himself and Clay Dalrymple.
Frayed Knot Mar 09 2011 07:37 AM Re: Double IGT, 3/8 |
So neither of the two MLers who came from Chico State was actually drafted from there -- Thayer was signed as a amateur FA; Dalrymple preceded the draft.
LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Mar 09 2011 09:45 AM Re: Double IGT, 3/8 |
Chico State's an actual school? I always thought it was, like, a cutesy euphemism for the state pen.
