I always find images of natural disaster pretty amazing, as terrible as they are.

I think this is the first time since i left on 10/23 that I don't wish I was in Hawaii.

Yeah, me too. I was there in 2008. Now, every time I watch Hawaii Five-0 in HD, I want to pack up and move there.

Today, not so much.

Fuck, i know. Was thinking the same exact thing about that car. What the hell must be going through your mind when you're driving down a road through a field and see huge sea barges & tons of debris charging towards you on the back of huge, rolling water?? Tear-jerking stuff.

That death toll's going to rise significantly; the damage-- at least 4,000,000 homes affected-- is going to be staggering.

My Facebook friend in Chiba (Bobby Vee's hood):

HOME!!!!! After more than 5 hours in the car in what should have been less than a one hour drive. It's 4am. I was standing out in the cold with a 25 pound (12kg) backpack on my back for almost 6 hours and then that drive. Still feeling aftershocks!!! Thanks everyone for all the well wishes. Family and me are all fine and we still have electricity, water, etc and there's absolutely no damage to our apartment.

It appears for now the accident is contained, but beyond the major health threat, this could set the nuclear energy industry back decades. And while many would welcome that, the impact on the Japanese economy, and potentially the global economy, could be catastrophic.

The amazing story is how much worse this could have been. Wealth, engineering skill, and a government that gives a damn about the safety of its people go a long way.

As a side story, the tsunami was the first since 1964 to cause a fatality in the continental US. I certainly don't think anyone deserves to die, but the proper reaction to a tsunami warning is not to head out to the beach to snap some pictures. http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.c ... 1I9993.DTL

Yeah, Chernobyl was pretty much stone-age technology then. Matters also weren't helped out by typical Soviet paranoia-inspired secrecy which led to the accident not being acknowledged publicly until detected by Swedish scientists three days later and internally (like to the people who lived nearby) until later still (if at all).

Also heard some breathless reporter talking about this possibly becoming "a disaster of Three-Mile Island proportions" ... and I'm thinking, hmmm, no deaths, no injuries, no detected health problems down the road -- hey, that's my kind of disaster!

Mar 14 2011 07:53 AM
Re: Earthquake in Japan, Tsunami in Hawaii and West Coast

A big difference too is that Chernobyl was actively up and running during that disaster while these had shut down with sensor warnings , plus at Chernobyl they were doing experiments that they should not have.......a huge set back for the nuclear industry of course, last Thursday morning on Irish radio I was listening to a professor from NUI Galway advocating for nuclear energy in Ireland and talking about how for instance in Italy they are building right now dozens of plants.....Japan he pointed out at the time was dependent on nuclear energy as it had few natural resources.

Re: Earthquake in Japan, Tsunami in Hawaii and West Coast

Ireland's not going nuclear anytime soon. Not that don't need a national industrial initiative for the populace to get behind, but this won't be it.

Back in the day, Irish politicos had sticks in their collective craws about the UK's plant's being concentrated along the Irish Sea.

I don't think that's about to go away.

Stick with who you know, I think: Red Cross, Lutheran World Relief, Doctors Without Borders, Project Children, Catholic Relief Services, et al.

All these international relief groups should have a special fund on the front page of their websites by now.

LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr
Mar 14 2011 09:10 AM
Re: Earthquake in Japan, Tsunami in Hawaii and West Coast

One thing to keep in mind: if you trust the group to whom you're giving, you may want to leave off the disaster-specific earmarks (giving to your country's Red Cross for the International Response Fund, e.g., instead of to "Japan Relief"). Those earmarks keep the group from using your money for anything-- ANYTHING-- other than relief for that specific incident... even if the relief effort is completed. There's still some 9/11 Fund money in an escrow-y place for that reason.

While the NPB season is delayed a cherished baseball tradition will go on as scheduled:

Koshien tourney to begin on time

OSAKA (Kyodo) The Japan High School Baseball Federation decided Friday to go ahead with the National High School Invitational Tournament as scheduled for March 23-April 3.

Last week’s devastating earthquake in northeastern Japan had put the holding of the traditional baseball event in question.

The federation made the decision to realize high school players’ dreams of playing at Koshien Stadium and encourage the people in the quake-hit areas after examining various opinions, including calls for a cancellation.

Since its inaugural edition in 1924, the tournament has been staged every spring, excluding the years between 1942 and 1946 because of World War II.

My two cents...

I have no problem with Gottfriend's tweet. If I read correctly, it was something along the lines of "I broke up with my girlfriend, but as the Japanese know, another will soon be floating by." Funny or not, it's not mean spirited, and for that reason, I'm ok.

Fifty Cent's was similarly harmless.

The one that got the least press was, by far, the most offensive. According to an ESPN article:

WNBA player Cappie Pondexter tweeted:

"What if God was tired of the way they treated their own people in there own country! Idk guys he makes no mistakes."

She later tweeted: "u just never knw! They did pearl harbor so u can't expect anything less."

Pondexter also used the racially derogatory term "jap," when referring to someone who was offended by her comments.

Sure, it may be in bad taste to joke about a tragedy, but it's far worse to issue a serious statement justifying hatred and prejudice. That such a statement comes from a minority is just mind-boggling.
