Sirrius Boneyard's Top 19 Vocalists

I know it's not the top CPF genre, but thought I throw this up
and see if anyone has some opinions.

Ronnie James kickin' ass from the urn!!

19- David Lee Roth
18- Geoff Tate
17- Paul Stanley
16- Joe Elliott
15- Ozzy
14- Klaus Meine
13- Bruce Dickenson
12- Geddy Lee
11- Ian Astbury
10-James Hetfield
09- Sammy Hagar
08- Rob Halford
07- Robert Plant
06- David Coverdale
05- Brian Johnson
04- Axl Rose
03- Steven Tyler
02- Bon Scott
01- Ronnie James Dio

Tyler is way too high, so is Coverdale. Love that Scott is still so
appreciated.

Re: Sirrius Boneyard's Top 19 Vocalists

Love that Scott is still appreciated, but probably still too high.

Axl lost it early.

Plant probably deserves higher considering how he recognized what he was doing wasn't sustainable and re-invented himself. Plus considering the breadth of imitators.

Speaking of imitators, Coverdale over Plant? Come on.

Omissions that jump out at me: Ian Gillan, Iggy Pop (too punk for the boneyard?), and some grunge guys with metuhl deliveries maybe like Chris Cornell.

Didn't even notice that Ian is missing. Shit, he could easily
be in the top 7-8! Yeah, Iggy isn't Boneyard material. Big Bon
Scott fan ... If You Want Blood, You've Got It is my second
favorite live album of all time.

Thought of Mercury, they don't play Queen much on Boneyard
for some reason if at all. Rob Zombie, Alice Cooper?

Queen's drummer probably outsang a half dozen guys on that list.

Lemmy's probably closer to "attitude" than "pipes," no?

On chops alone, Geoff Tate probably deserves a bump.

Also, if we're really considering chops, the ultraversatile Mike Patton (Faith No More, Mr. Bungle) strikes me as a big omission. Layne Staley? The guy from Tool (OE: Oh, yeah-- Maynard James Keenan)? Also, I didn't love his band, but... Sebastian Bach, maybe? (OE: Also opera-trained... and now a Broadway vet!)

Although... Coverdale over Plant-- hell, Coverdale over Tate, or Hagar, or Hetfield, or Dickinson-- kinda makes me think that, instead of Hulking out over anything here, I should shake my head, stick my thumb out, and move on to the next town.

Re: Sirrius Boneyard's Top 19 Vocalists

Agree on Tate , great singer, Elliot was and is an absolutely terrible live singer ,shouldn't be on the list at all. Sebastian Bach was a hell of a live singer and could have made this list over Elliot.

This. Saw SR in concert, he rocked the house....and it was a very large house.

Somebody please explain: why does Vince Neil get shat on?

Re: Sirrius Boneyard's Top 19 Vocalists

Because I think the Boneyard is in part about disassociating "real" metal from the hair band revival of the late eighties. While the Crüe pre-dates that, they rather peaked there. Ergo, no Neil, no Bach, no Jani Lane, no Gary Cherone, no Bret Michaels, no bald Quiet Riot guy, and no Bon Jersey.

How Coverdale survives that purging, I dunno, because Whitesnake was all in that, and his main other claim to history is replacing the list-absent Ian Gillan in Deep Purple, and no DP fan looks at that as a step forward.

That makes sense.

Gary Cherone. Heh. Famous for being the answer to a trivia question.

Yabbut, despite being responsible the extremely awful ballad that broke the hair band camel's back, Extreme wasn't exactly a parade of suck. They did, from my point of view, the best set during the Freddy Mercury tribute, and had the guts to do "I Want to Break Free."

(Not that I went out and bought their albums the next day or anything.)

Re: Sirrius Boneyard's Top 19 Vocalists

I don't disagree with Edgy here but the list loses credibility(did it ever have any?) if you go with your thinking. If Coverdale , Hager and Elliot are in but Neil , Bach and Bon Jovi are not when essentially they are interchangeable then it's all bollox isn't it?

What a memory , and you are right , they were great that day, one thing that set Extreme apart was the brilliant axe work of Nuno Bettencourt.

And let's add Ian Astbury to the list of lucky ones to make the cut, loved The Cult and for a time in my youth I even bought into his fake lizard king/goth look.

Re: Sirrius Boneyard's Top 19 Vocalists

Okay, I'm here. Vince Neil is a terrible, terrible singer, and what Lemmy does isn't technically "singing" at all. And yeah, I don't think Queen gets a whole lot of Boneyard love, or else Freddie would be Top Five.

19- David Lee Roth: Not much of a singer, really. All show.
18- Geoff Tate: Great, great voice, but tends to be a little overblown.
17- Paul Stanley: You're kidding, right?
16- Joe Elliott: Awful live, but distinctive.
15- Ozzy: Is this list going up or down? Just kidding. I know he's now clinically insane, but he should be a lot higher.
14- Klaus Meine: Yeah, I'll put him in the top 20.
13- Bruce Dickenson: That's also a win.
12- Geddy Lee: Certainly distinctive, but I'm not a fan.
11- Ian Astbury: Not a Cult fan either.
10- James Hetfield: Singing, or growling?
09- Sammy Hagar: Really?!?!
08- Rob Halford: Yes, definitely yes.
07- Robert Plant: Also definitely yes.
06- David Coverdale: Should not, under any circumstances, be ahead of Plant.
05- Brian Johnson: Sure.
04- Axl Rose: Probably not this high.
03- Steven Tyler: Yes.
02- Bon Scott: Sure.
01- Ronnie James Dio: I'm okay with Dio at the top.

I guess it depends on what you mean by "top." Influence? Talent? Sound? The top eight are all pretty damn solid. I'd add Ozzy and Bruce Dickinson to the top ten.

Gary Cherone should definitely be on the list; and you're right, their performance at the Freddie Mercury tribute was incredible. Surprised JBJ and Sebastian Bach aren't there too.

Wild cards nobody's mentioned: Mark Slaughter before he got old and lost his voice, the Nelson brothers, Mike Matijevic from Steelheart, the guy from Nitro who married Lita Ford and could break glasses with his high notes (Jim Gillette).

Non-hair band wild cards: Chris Cornell before he got old and lost his voice, Serj Tankian from System of a Down.

Nice Wolf , I had thought of Slaughter , speaking of wild cards how about Tom Keifer from Cinderella, guy had some pipes.

Disagree on Neil though , "Don't go away mad" and "without you" are brilliant.

Steelheart's Mike Matijevic (money notes from 3:00-3:28):

[youtube:2fus7ctf]F-nyeiKk35M[/youtube:2fus7ctf]

Mark Slaughter:

[youtube:2fus7ctf]ukmobha2krY[/youtube:2fus7ctf]

I'll throw Tom Keifer and Jeff Keith into the group of "guys I could listen to all day," although neither one is exactly a contender for American Idol.

And I can't believe I forgot Jani Lane, who isn't the greatest vocalist, but might be the best songwriter of his era.

I'm not saying I don't like Motley Crue. I'm just saying that Vince Neil is the Derek Jeter of hair metal vocalists.

I love DGAM.

They did another ballad, which they sung with Seb Bach, "Time for change" which better showcases Neil's singing prowess.

That entire album reminds me of our 1991 Championship....goosebumps I tell you.

Resubmitted for your consideration: Mike Patton. Percussive vocals for stompy-singalong rap-rock, straightfaced crooning on surprisingly credible covers, squealing guitar-solo mimicry, Slayer or Lemmy-like growls on demand, and demented mixes of it all on Fantomas' cut-and-paste metal weirdness.

Forgot Patton, but yeah, he's not Boneyard material. His "Mondo Cane" disc from last year is actually really neat; covers of Italian film music.
