Non-Met Reference Hell

I'm really tired of reading comments that say that a non-fiction book "reads like a novel."

Some non-fiction books really do read like a novel, but in the vast majority of times that the phrase is used, it's completely misleading.

"Our long national nightmare is over."

"Houston, we have a problem."

"Survey says..."

"Enjoy!" (on departure)

Hiya (as a salutation - probably more of a Brit thing).

In business, qualifying everything with the phrase "on a high-level"

"I loves me some..."

"Going forward..."

"Clearly..."

Re: Non-Met Reference Hell

I find myself "going forward" a lot when I'm in corp-speak mode. A little part of me dies with each occurrence.

"We're not in Kansas anymore."

"Needless to say..."

And "literally" is so far beyond the scope of this list, overuse-wise, that it bothers me when I hear it used correctly.

Stick a fork in that one!

"They're baaa-aaak."

I'm pretty sure people use that one without quite knowing what they're referencing.

"I could care less"...

Then why don't you? 'Cause I sure as hell couldn't.

Same with "Come Out and Play-ay" and "We're through the looking glass..."

It's time to go for "it's 'go time.'"

Sassy "sistah" locutions-- "put a ring on it," etc.-- delivered by decidedly unsassy people make my insides curdle. Is this the place to dump that?

The sarcastic "Really?" has run it's course as well.

Oh, the new meme amongst those types is to acronymize everything like "my BBF" and using LOL as a noun, or worse a verb, in ordinary conversation. Some people are fucked.

"In other words"

"What i'm saying is"

both used to death(there's another one) by John Harper.

I can't read his columns without expecting them.

These are good, but we're conflating cliched expressions with cliched references.
