My friends keep getting robbed in London!

I've had four e-mails from friends saying they were robbed in London and needed money desperately.

Oddly, the messages don't sound anything like their usual writing style, and are filled with typoes that they would never make.

I email back that I'm sending the money. But, damn it, I always forget the Western Union Control Number that they need to pick it up. Forgetful me. But it does lead to some interesting conversations.

Re: My friends keep getting robbed in London!

Had relatives traveling in Europe recently who ran into this scam.
Check the friends' email, the one I heard about was sent to friends on their actual email list from an address that was not quite their real one but would pass for it at quick glance.
The email had a similar story, one about the traveling couple needing money and where to send it (a room or box at a hotel that wasn't where they were staying IIRC).

Re: My friends keep getting robbed in London!

Crime in London is an epidemic (and it has been that way at least since Thatcher came into power) -- the bizarre thing is there are cameras everywhere, but for some reason they don't deter criminals.

My sister is a resident of London - in the last 4 years she's had mobile phones, a laptop and an ipod snatched off her (and she lives in a pretty decent area).

But those crimes pale into insignificance compared to the time she had her credit cards expertly stolen by two obese West Indian women on the Tube, who then proceeded to rack up £8,500 worth of purchases at Harrods before she had time to report them to the credit card company/police.
