Robert Palmer was a stylish, eclectic pop singer who did everything from island rhythms to soul, funk, raggae, blues, disco, rock, sex jams, shitty fomulaic pop, covers, originals, underproduced stuff, overproduced stuff, solo work, band work, singing, crooning, yodeling, vocalizing, shouting, whispering... you name it.

Then he died.

Choose one from this steamy pile of recordings he left behind (or choose one of your own) for inclusion on the Mix Tape that will accompany you for a lifetime of solitude on a desert island.

Re: Addicted to the Desert Island Mix Tape

My poll didn't even include Power Station and I still could barely keep it under 20 tracks.

The dude had a soft spot for carribbean sounds, and had a mini-calypso career.

Awful , after a struggle I voted for Addicted to Love , had forgotten about "Change His Ways" , prolly haven't heard that in years(although rumor is this poll was done before)....."Every kinda people" was nearly voted for.

Re: Addicted to the Desert Island Mix Tape

I have a vague memory of it, but will need to see the link to be sure.

For today anyway, let's pretend we didn't do it before and enjoy a reconsideration of this guy.

Yeah, died suddenly of a heart attack in '03 at age 54. He lived through the "Double Fun" album-cover shoot, so he prolly has few regrets.

Re: Addicted to the Desert Island Mix Tape

Underrated artist IMO.

I was ten when the Power Station came out with their album and I thought it was great. I had no clue about T-Rex or the Robert Palmer back catalogue. I just knew there were some Duran Duran dudes in the band.

The dancing models got a little old in the late 80's.

I went with "Bad Case of Loving You" for my desert island.

Re: Addicted to the Desert Island Mix Tape

Plenty of white crooners tried that carribbean beach soul sound back then , even Bruce Willis tried to sell himself as one, Phil Collins had a phase......probably plenty of money in it I'm sure.

Yeah, but his came earlier and few of them were trying to do calypso.

I'm Willets P. and I had embarrassing musical tastes in the 80's.

I admit that I loved Power Station and still kind of do.

I also think sax solos are really cool.

The batch of models and the suave Armani Bond thing was initially presented with more than a hint of irony, but "Addicted to Love" was so huge that he got locked into it. It had become his image and too big to run away from.

Re: Addicted to the Desert Island Mix Tape

My sweet, doomed, long-suffering former girlfriend and her friends all did the Palmer model thing for Halloween one year. I always kinda wanted her to do it again.

It wasn't the worst image in the world, however, the music held up better than the look of the models did.

Who knew the shape of the eyebrow would change so much in 25 years?

Those who weren't aware that Palmer was dead shirley forgot, or weren't part of the CPF then, back before we had far too many 'All-Purpose' threads and Bucket announced Palmer's death with a thread entitled 'Simply Unrevivable'

That's pretty good for me. I didn't recall that thread but I remember he died in 2003.

Thus the thread is lost in the great EZBoard crash of 2005.

Re: Addicted to the Desert Island Mix Tape

All these songs merge with the complete oeuvres of Spandau Ballet, Big Country, Style Council, INXS, and Orchestral Maneuvers In The Dark to form one great big lumpy amorphous mass of background sound from college.

Except for "Sneakin Sally Through The Alley", which got my vote.

Write in for Hyperactive.

Wasn't that Thomas Dolby? He's somewhere in that amorphous mass, too.

Just you wait until America gets prosperous again-- you'll buttock-tracing hemlines and forehead-ridge forestry on all our hottest natural resources. (STOCK TIP: Put all your money in sheer turtlenecks now, before the jobs rebound kicks in fully.)

Loved, loved, LOVED the Power Station album as a kid. But then, I can't forget NOW that I know who T. Rex was.

"Addicted to Love" is a damn near perfect pop song. It might seem like an easy choice-- it isn't, really, since "Simply Irresistible" and most of The Power Station is great, great plastic rock, too-- but it's mine. Plus, it seems right to go with the prettiest-produced record on here, right?

Show: "Some Like It Hot"
Place: "Simply Irresistible"
Win: "Addicted To Love"

Re: Addicted to the Desert Island Mix Tape

His "Hyeractive" and Dolby's "Hyperactive" were different "Hyperactive"s.

We could probably have a Desert Island "Hyperactive" showdown. For what it's worth, Palmer was singing about "she" being hyper, while Dolby was singing about himself.

Procrastinating over Palmer?, he'd be chuffed if he weren't dead at the minute.

Re: Addicted to the Desert Island Mix Tape

I was leaning toward "Johnny and Mary," decided to commit, and then learned it wasn't on the ballot. I'm jumping in with "other." Talk about getting Palmer chuffed!

A fun dance-able song about an unhappy couple. Hot mime action in the video.

What was it with the 80's and mimes? They were almost as ubiquitous as sax solos.

I was planning (and still hope to) do some "Desert Island Videos" polls where you only get to take one mime video, one mannequin video, etc.

Re: Addicted to the Desert Island Mix Tape

Mimes are more of a late-'70s carryover, I think (see: Marcel Marceau on the talk-show circuit, Shields and Yarnall).

Here, you've got that colliding with the VERY '80s superliteral, stylized-acting-out-of-the-lyrics-video thing.

Put me down for "Johnny and Mary", Hoss.

Tell me about it: That "dancing models look" lived three doors down from where I slept for 2 1/2 of my formative years.
