IGT - 4/2/11 Mets at Marlins

Re: IGT - 4/2/11 Mets at Marlins

Sounds good to me. I only hope Wee Willie Harris isn't considered the "Hot Hand" after one game.

I hope last night's listless effort was an abberation from what is to come.

Re: IGT - 4/2/11 Mets at Marlins

At least he swung when Johnson left it out over the plate. With one or two exceptions, Met hitters appeared to be "patient" in the early-2010-Francoeur mold (take no matter what for the first two or three pitches, then swing at whatever the frig you feel like). Marlin hitters still saw a crap-ton more pitches than ours did per PA (with Coghlan and Buck seeing 5 per).

Anyway...

This thread is a blur of mid-eighties cinema, innit?

Had the game on mute late: does anyone have any clue why the right fielder-- Cousins?-- let the potential Wright foul out drop in the tenth? (The potential tag-up of Reyes/Pagan? If that's it... that kid deserves some Landshark, or Sol, or whatever.)

If he catches that then Reyes takes 3rd easily with one out (and maybe Pagan takes 2nd and kills the potential GiDP). I've seen that before with a runner on 3rd that could win/tie the game but I don't think I've seen it only 1st & 2nd.
If I'm on 'D' there I want the out - particularly with the other team's best hitter up there.

But at least that one is a split decision call by a player. But how about Collins bunting Pagan to get Reyes over?!?!? Really Terry?
And he kept in on after 2-0 count and still on 2-1. That it worked thanks to a wide throw doesn't make it a good play IMO.
That Reyes can get there on his own and base stealers were 10-fer-10 against that pitcher last season makes it even worse.

Really Terry?!?!?

Re: IGT - 4/2/11 Mets at Marlins

Even leaving aside that it's DAVID FUCKING WRIGHT at the plate to whom you're giving another strike, you take the out. Outs, even in a tie game in extras, are the most precious quantity.

Though I kinda liked his leaving Boyer in to finish (only sticking point there: why get Byrdak up, then?), Terry's in-game management these last two games hasn't exactly been highlight-reel-worthy.

Frayed Knot
Apr 02 2011 09:03 PM
Re: IGT - 4/2/11 Mets at Marlins

Yeah, that's a more modest point but why bother to get Byrdak up if you're just going to let Boyer pitch to two LHBs?
Plus it's not like BB was mowing them down without a hitch.

And you likely end up walking Beltran if you catch that. So you can go after Hu and a pinch hitter. obviously that's a lot to take in as you're running for a pop-fly, but that's why you don't over think and just catch the ball.

A bit of confusion between Emaus and Reyes and Beltran and Pagan tonight. Hopefully those things get ironed out. Who we got in RF tomorrow? Harris or Hairston?

Re: IGT - 4/2/11 Mets at Marlins

Wow, Gwreck gives an Edgy-like response to Edgy himself. Interesting!

Anyway, I too was a little surprised last night when Byrdak didn't come in to relieve Boyer and pitch to the lefty. Was Terry asked about that on the postgame?

Also, I was thinking about how Johnny Lunchbucket often laments the Mets inability to tack on runs just before Willie Harris drove in two tack-ons, which proved to be very important. Nice to see.

When Frankie was pitching in the ninth, and had the bases loaded after the score had been tied, I was anticipating the worst possible outcome: a Mets loss and a Rodriguez GF (game finished). Happily, we got neither. But if it was late in the season, and Frankie was at 54 GFs, might he have been tempted to intentionally throw a wild pitch? He was in a situation where the only way he'd finish the game was if the Mets lost. Here's a potential situation where a player can be rewarded with $17.5 million (!) for intentionally throwing a game! That possibility should be a huge red flag, I'd think.

Re: IGT - 4/2/11 Mets at Marlins

Yeah, well that's why incentive clauses based on most 'outcome' stats aren't allowed.
ABs, PAs, appearances and the like are usually something that's out of a player's direct control.
'Games Finished' kind of falls into more of a gray area.

Re: IGT - 4/2/11 Mets at Marlins

Nice win, but I had some serious issues with [crossout:zjhmvuar]Willie[/crossout:zjhmvuar]Terry Collins in this game.

Pinch-running Davis in a tie game? The speed of Hu ended up making no difference, but we missed Davis's defense in the bottom of the 9th (maybe Ike grabs the one that got past Murphy) and his bat in the tenth. If Harris doesn't tack on two runs there, who knows what happens. FK mentioned it, but bunting Reyes over with Pagan? BiFL.

Plus, I've seen about enough of Rodriguez as closer. Time to make a switch to Parnell.

I never realized how much an incentive clause would affect my rooting interest in a game.

No doubt, but that was determined in August 2010. He could've saved the first 6 games in a row this year and still would be booed on Friday.
