Re: IGT - 4/3/11 Mets at Marlins

Murphy with his first career start at second base...with all the talk about him playing second in the last few seasons I was surprised that he has never actually started a MLB game there.

So, Thole gets the day game after the night game. Mildly surprising.

I remember there was talk that this series might be played in San Juan. I'm beginning to seriously doubt that that's going to happen.

day off tomorrow, it's early. and yeah, Nickeas doesn't hit, and you're resting Beltran and Emaus today too.

I wonder how much Nickeas has caught a knuckleball, too.

On Dickey: apparently he is going to climb Mount Kilamanjaro this offseason.

Does anyone else remember those Dos Equis "Most Interesting Man in the Whole World" commercials? Because that's what I think of each time I hear another one of these Dickey stories...

I would've loved to have run into Dickey out and about in Port St. Lucie. maybe next year.

I do think of that commercial a bit. I wonder what Dickey's preferred beverage of choice is..

Textbook pitching against Bonifacio there. After Bonifacio went the opposite way and just missed a run-scoring double (it went foul), Dickey comes inside with two perfectly placed pitches for strikes two and three.

I can watch Marlins miscues and poor pitching all day long with the Mets. I only wish Hermida and Ross could have been involved.

Something's wrong. Acccording to Gameday, there are people in the stands in Miami. Upper deck and everything.

Meanwhile, my wife's new Macbook Pro is streaming the game quite nicely Thanks for the loaner, Honey.

My name is Buck, and I like to fuck up rallies.

Nice 3-2 slider from Carrasco cleans up Capuano's mess.

That's a lot of high sock action in today's game:

Wright
Reyes
Dickey
Capuano
Carrasco

THESE are the Marlins I remember.
Performances like they got from Josh Johnson cover up a lot of dreck, but they've been just awful defensively and otherwise since.

And after all the talk, all the same old same old, the Mets finish the weekend with the same 2-1 record as the MFYs.

And did it on the road ... against a division opponent ... one we've usually had trouble with ... and are behind only Philly in the East (who had a series at home with maybe the worst team in the NL).

Really only 1 bad inning (pitch?) from Pelfrey and a blown Frankie save marred the whole weekend.

Well there was the six innings of noffense to start off the season that was worrisome too, but I'm pleased to see that the bats have woken up.

Rubber game on the road. I feel like the last time we won one of those was 2009.

Good stuff.

Re: IGT - 4/3/11 Mets at Marlins

We actually won 2 rubber games on the road in September last year, on 9/8/10 at Washington and 9/26/10 at Philadephia. We lost the 8 other road rubber games that year.

The last time we WON a road rubber game when we weren't hopelessly out of the playoff race was probably June 7, 2009 in Washington.

Case anybody missed it - tHere was a nice story during the game about Carlitos approaching and mentoring Duda when we was slumping last year. He even took him out for a nice dinner.

Young-Hamels? Umm, ok. Maybe the players dislike Hamels as much as I do and are ready to give him the pounding he so richly deserves.

Pelfrey-Blanton? I guess.

Niese-Halladay? Put down the crack pipe.

Well, the Mets do tend to beat Hamels, and I think he's going to have a down year. More walks, less Ks. Hard to say Young is 'better', but I just like getting to face Hamels.

Pelfrey's better than Blanton, that's an easy one.

Obviously the last one is in their favor, but I do like Niese. Our offense is better, and our bullpen is better. Halladay might not be stretched out to go 8-9 effectively yet.

Re: IGT - 4/3/11 Mets at Marlins

I don't think Niese v Halladay is a lay down misere*. At the risk of sounding like Joe Morgan, you still have to put up the runs to win a ballgame. I don't know, maybe I'm drinking kool-aid.

OE *dead certainty.

Re: IGT - 4/3/11 Mets at Marlins

I have no doubt that the Mets can beat Halladay; we need look no farther than Roy's last start when Houston bested him. But I will still be realistic that we are the underdog.

I will be satisfied with winning one of the 3 games in Philly this series and happy with winning 2.

Re: IGT - 4/3/11 Mets at Marlins

For all the talk of 'getting off to a hot start', if it's worth anything, winning the series against the Phillies would go a long way towards that. Then they've got 13/16 at home, and if the home field advantage they've had holds up, (They're playing Washington, Colorado, Houston and Arizona so..) they'll be off to quite a decent start.

On the fourth day of this baseball season, R.A. Dickey slots in at third place in ESPN.com's new feature - The Cy Young Predictor - based on formulas by Bill James and Rob Neyer
