Tim McCarver. Please stop talking

"It's deplorable. I would not want to be a player on the Mets right now," McCarver said. "Not because they are not talented enough, but because of all the questions surrounding the team this year will be (about) the off-field problems. It's very difficult to play under those circumstances."

Didn't the Texas Rangers just go to the World Series at a time when they were in bankruptcy?

Re: Tim McCarver. Please stop talking

McCarver's entitled to his opinion, but he's got a history, maybe a little grudge, and therefore a little skin in the game, or at least some psyche.

I, personally, would like to be a player on the Mets right now.

I think Terry Collins should be able to nip this "distraction" thing in the bud. Just tell the players to respond to financial questions with something like, "I really don't have much information about what's going on with the financial situation. I'm just focused on what's happening on the field."

Enough responses like that, and the questions will stop. And even if they don't stop, they won't be a "distraction" because the questions will be asked and answered very quickly.

"It's agonizing. I personally feel the Wilpons have to sell the ballclub," McCarver, Fox's No. 1 baseball analyst, said Tuesday during a conference call. "I don't see how they can escape by selling a minority position, particularly when they don't allow any control."

apart from it being agonizing I agree with Tim.

Tim McCarver frustrates me. I used to LOVE his analysis when I was a kid, and I still think "Baseball for Brain Surgeons" is a really well-done book. I don't know if he's just losing his mind or what.

How does he know that selling a minority share won't help the team? Minority shares have been a part of baseball forever, and minority owners have dealt with the the reality of having limited, or no, voice, in the team's operations.

It's a tough spot, but I don't see how so many are experts on what's going to happen next.

It's a market situation. If they need to lose the team, they will lose the team.

Re: Tim McCarver. Please stop talking

McCarver doesn't say that a minority share won't help the team , and really he's probably more of an "expert" on the Wilpon's that we are and yet we speculate........close down the board....no more of that please.

I think they should all respond "I'm doing just fine!" and hand the reporter a quarter.

Re: Tim McCarver. Please stop talking

I'm reminded of watching the 1999 ALDS Game 5 between Boston & Cleveland in some dive bar. There was an old bar fly who kept her head down on the table for the majority of the game lifting it only once to say:

"Shut the fuck up, McCarver. You're such a chatty Cathy!"

I'm nor sure what you mean by "close down the board."

Re: Tim McCarver. Please stop talking

Sure, and I would, if he could hear me, challenge him to do a better job supporting his situation, instead of pushing the old yellow journalist angle that the substance of the story doesn't matter, because it's become a "distraction."

"I don't see how they can escape by selling a minority position, particularly when they don't allow any control." I don't know that they will or won't be able to statisfy their debt obligations by bringing in other investors, but it certainly doesn't take much to see how they can.

I learned as much about baseball from Tim McCarver as I've learned from anybody. Seriously. But I don't think he knows much more than many of us about finance. And his history with the Wilpons has to be considered when he makes such statements.

The Mets organization owes a lot of money. What's next is a tough call. We'll find out. If they need to sell because they can't make it, so be it. But the idea that they need to sell because their players will be facing stupid questions is a weak position.

Re: Tim McCarver. Please stop talking

Would've never predicted this version of Tim McCarver 20 or 25 years ago when he might've been baseball's best voice. The first chink in McCarver's armor that I can recall was his book about why 1998 was such a great baseball season.

I don't think he was saying that at all. It reads to me like two separate observations:

1. He thinks the Wilpons will ultimately have to sell the team. (That's my guess too, but only time will tell.)
2. This is going to be distracting for the players (and the broadcasters.)

For posterity:

New York Daily News wrote:
Tim McCarver thinks there is only one way for Mets ownership to extricate itself from the financial squeeze it is in.

"It's agonizing. I personally feel the Wilpons have to sell the ballclub," McCarver, Fox's No. 1 baseball analyst, said Tuesday during a conference call. "I don't see how they can escape by selling a minority position, particularly when they don't allow any control."

McCarver, who worked behind a Mets TV microphone for 16 seasons (1983-1998), said the financial plight of the team will weigh on the players until it is resolved.

"It's deplorable. I would not want to be a player on the Mets right now," McCarver said. "Not because they are not talented enough, but because of all the questions surrounding the team this year will be (about) the off-field problems. It's very difficult to play under those circumstances."

On the field, McCarver said he can't see the Mets doing much. "But if they finish second or a close third (in the NL East) it wouldn't surprise me as far as their talent on the field," he said. "However, they are going to be asked questions about these off-field matters all year, every place they go."

McCarver said the Mets' TV broadcasters, SportsNet New York's Gary Cohen, Ron Darling and Keith Hernandez, will be under pressure too.

"It's very difficult to broadcast under those circumstances. That's just because you have to tell what you deem to be the truth," McCarver said. "It can't be a soap opera about the owners every day and I'm sure Gary, Keith and Ron will keep it between the lines."

Re: Tim McCarver. Please stop talking

McCarver annoyed me back in the 80's when he covered the Mets. I'd turn down the tv and turn on the radio.

I'm guessing Joe and Tim will discuss it enough for everyone during each and every Mets FOX broadcast this season.

At least there isn't a readymade ten-second loop of Madoff-related video for them to beat into the ground during commercial bumpers, game intros, and in-game storytelling.

"Joe, as we watch this footage of Derek Jeter diving into the stands and making that flip to cut down Jeremy Giambi, we're reminded that Bernard Madoff performed some financial acrobatics that clearly weren't as admirable. But the losses sustained by the New York Mets are almost as legendary as Jeter's defensive wizardry."
