If you're not pumped up for the season, then please don't leave a snarky/sarcastic comment, but if you are, then say why (it can be as simple as "because I love listening to GKR.")

... to prove wrong those that are happily picking the Mets for last place. I think that they're better than that--maybe not much but I know that they're not a last place team.

Re: I Am Excited About the Mets 2011 Season ...

I think it will be an interesting year. How will Davis and Niese progress? What will happen with Beltran and Reyes? When will Santana come back? Will Bay redeem himself or doom himself in New York? What does Brad Emaus have? What kind of a manager will Terry Collins be?

I really think this will be a more interesting mediocre season than most others.

Re: I Am Excited About the Mets 2011 Season ...

Because bad or good season, I expect more wins than losses, particularly at home where I'll attend games. To separate everything else out, there's little as enjoyable as taking in a Mets game at Citi Field and watching them win.

I'm hoping it has a 2005 vibe where they still won't be obvious contenders, but they will noticeably headed in the right direction on the field.

Re: I Am Excited About the Mets 2011 Season ...

We have the remarkable David Wright, who one day will be the best there ever was for us.

Lunchpail is starting to "get" baseball and he absolutely loves playing it.

We'll have 11 new players right off the bat including 2 ROY candidates. Fun.

Ike Davis, Angel Pagan and Josh Thole for 162.

Chip Hale and his dynamic third-base coaching.

Something to look forward to every day.

Re: I Am Excited About the Mets 2011 Season ...

I think this will be a fun season. The Mets have a chance to prove a lot of people wrong and it will be interesting to see how far they can take that. Even if it's not a great season in terms of wins & losses, I think it will be a less frustrating season than the past few years, there won't be the "cockpunches" of giving away winnable games. The Mets will be trying new things and trying hard and while it won't always work it will show promise.

Because watching a season unfold is a whole lot better than pre-deciding the outcome and basing on your decision on that.

Man, imagine how much people will rave about Alderson and Co if they pull two guys away from other teams that didn't want them and they compete for ROY?

How would they not? Their Rule 5-ness practically guarantees they'll be getting the innings, so unless they are complete busts they will compile.

Well I assume by candidate you meant they'd actually get a vote at the end of the year, not just be on the list of rookies via compilation. Did Venters for Atlanta get votes last year? I assume that's Beato's ceiling. Emaus though, could be a serious candidate. Especially since if he sticks through the year, it probably means he was good enough not to lose the job to Murphy or Turner or Tejada or someone.

Oh Lawdy, is she walking. Climbing, too (she's been doing stairs since 9 months; she's been pulling herself up onto couches and futons-- with her upper-body and a leg kick-- since 9 1/2 months).

Yeah, these should be some fun, exhausting Saturday/Sunday afternoons.

What the Yankees need is Alyssa Milano to start hanging around. In fact, she could marry Gustavo Molina and just re-arrange the letters of her last name without having to add or subtract anything.

Re: I Am Excited About the Mets 2011 Season ...

In the broad sense, because being a Mets fan is more fun when there's something to be a fan of -- an actual team playing actual games instead of it all being theoretical.

In the 2011 sense, because they are bound to be playing with a ton more passion out of the gate than they were when they were watching the 2010 clock wind down.

And in the CPF sense, because we'll have real stuff to dissect to death as opposed to merely guessing what will happen next.

Ten Reasons the Mets Aren't that Bad

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Apr 07 2011 06:37 AM
Re: I Am Excited About the Mets 2011 Season ...

The biggest reason and really, the only one that'll ultimately matter:

4. Depth in the lineup. As Baseball Prospectus pointed out in its annual, the Mets gave 40 percent of their plate appearances to hitters worse than league average. Among the culprits with at least 100 plate appearances: Luis Castillo, Rod Barajas, Alex Cora, Henry Blanco and somebody named Jesus Feliciano. This year, the Mets go eight deep in the lineup, with catcher Josh Thole hitting eighth. And Thole isn’t that bad. Not much power, but a decent .357 OBP as a rookie in 2010.

I know it's easier said than done, but glad there appears to be some thought in the FO that it's not OK to just surrender a few slots in the lineup every night just because you have a few good players. I don't think the '10 Mets were reasonably capable of what the O did last night, though I could see it happening again with this team.

Re: I Am Excited About the Mets 2011 Season ...

The best news is that they've replaced Castillo, Barajas, and Francoeur (and really, where does that xenophobic report get off indicting Jesus Feliciano but giving Francoeur --- who consumed at-bats like Pac-Man --- a pass?) with better bats and really not taking on any more money. If you want them to re-sign Reyes, this is where you ought ot be most grateful.

Schoenfield's the same writer who speculated that the Phils might struggle to even make the playoffs this year, supported by totaling up expected WAR gains and losses. The duller tools in the Phils fanbase probably think of him as Jayson Stark North at this point.

Several hours before Roy Halladay emerges, I'm simply in a good Mets mood. Not good enough to be all consumed by whether they'll be 4-2 or 3-3 later, but much better than recent seasons' undercurrent of "fine if they win, but if they lose, at least they might fire/release/trade somebody".

The calm after the storm, perhaps.

It's happened before...

METS ZERO IN ON CLUB MARK

Now 0-5 after dropping yet another one to Braves

BY ADAM RUBIN DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER
Sunday, April 10, 2005

ATLANTA -
The New Mets will be introduced at Shea tomorrow, one-by-one jogging from the dugout to the first-base line. And what promised a week ago to be a glorious homecoming filled with cheer after an extreme winter makeover now may turn ugly, after fans' renewed emotional investment in the downtrodden club has been rewarded with more misery.

Aaron Heilman took the mound for the Mets last night trying to stop the bleeding. The Mets might as well have sent out the front-office executive who allowed the franchise to use its 2001 first-round pick to select him.

Heilman, subbing for the injured Kris Benson, served up a mammoth second-inning grand slam to Brian Jordan as the Braves beat the Mets, 6-3, at Turner Field. So much for Heilman's reworked mechanics, which involved returning to the three-quarters-style delivery that allowed him to go undefeated his senior year of college.

The Mets dropped to 0-5, the franchise's worst start in 42 years and third-worst start all-time, closing in on No. 1 (0-9, 1962) and No. 2 (0-8, 1963).

They are baseball's only winless team. They haven't led since Braden Looper blew an Opening Day save. And all that stands between them and a winless road trip is Pedro Martinez, who must best John Smoltz this afternoon to snap the skid. Oh, and Andy Pettitte and Roger Clemens await the Mets when they arrive home.

Heilman remains one of the biggest symbols of the Mets' nosedive since the organization's 2000 World Series appearance. He's polite, quiet and intellectual, an avid reader. He has degrees in management information systems and philosophy from Notre Dame and a crossword puzzle always nearby. He also was the best available arm to promote in the system for last night's start, which underscores how barren the Mets' highest level of the minors has become. Triple-A Norfolk's starting lineup for a doubleheader game yesterday included only one prospect, center fielder Angel Pagan. Otherwise the Tides are serving as a holding pen for other organization's castoffs.

Jose Santiago, who would have made the start instead of Heilman had Mike Cameron not landed on the disabled list, was knocked out in the third inning of Norfolk's other doubleheader game after surrendering four runs and eight hits.

The Mets haven't been willing to rush prospects like 20-year-old Yusmeiro Petit, who made only his third Double-A start yesterday, but they might have to rethink that philosophy for as long as Benson is sidelined with a strained pectoral muscle.

Certainly has, but not while dovetailing with an already prevailing trend of the organization being a punching bag for their financial condition.
