Color Tone Creep

Many a comment has been passed in the last decade or so that even when the Mets forsake the black these days for their "true colors," the truth of the hues hasn't always been apparent, with the classick Mets royal bue frequently displaced by a deeper purpluish version of the color. And the metallic gloss on the sci-fi helmets has only served to move us even further away on the color spectrum.

Well, anybody visit the Mets site the last week. You'll notice the navigation bars have changed, now rendered in a Diamondbacky Brick shade, and I fear this is a new addition to the team's color pallette, and might have a future slowly elbowing the classic NYC Orange aside in much the same way Purple Nurple has been chipping away at Royal Blue's authority.

Does that make me conservative? No way! I just don't want things to change.

I dont think I'd read much into a color creep on the website. web colors are always slightly different looking anyway, and I think all the sites got a makeover recently.

First they came for the communists,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a communist.

Then they came for the trade unionists,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a Jew.

Then they came for me
and there was no one left to speak out for me.

The creepy colors seem to be on other sites too:

http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/index.jsp?c_id=chc

http://stlouis.cardinals.mlb.com/index.jsp?c_id=stl

Hopefully this means it is just an MLB.com thing and not a Mets thing.

Just wait... the Mets will take the field tonight wearing hot pink and lime green.

Darker than those teams' standard red, but different from the Mets navigation bar also.

The whole league's gone bloody!

They've adjusted the official colors by a few numbers on the Pantone scale a few times. I don't know this as well as I oughta but recently came across an article saying as much in.. 1993, I think. To me the encouraging thing on the website is the lack of black.

The Mets still have one of the ugliest looks in the game, the blue and black on helmets are just absolutely awful and way too showy, if they had any clue what they were dong they'd render them in a matte finish blue. I don't know if any of you have looked at your local bike shop recently but matte finish is THE look in protective headgear, how the Mets fail to get this is insane. Really, in light of the economy and their own financial troubles, adopting a look and attitude that suggested austerity and good value for the dollar is what the Mets ought to be doing with everything. Jesus, just surrender the luxury market to the MFYs already.

I was watching the Dodgers-Giants game last nite and the striking thing about the Dodgers home whites is how the numbers just explode off the back because unlike the Mets', they're not rendered in two colors and needlessly shadowed in black.

I'm ranting here, better stop.

Print and send. It'll get at least as much attention as your letter to WPLJ.

Same logic that explained the popularity of Joey Buttafuoco pants back in the day. Appealing to the most popular look, not the most cutting edge or the coolest. When the matte finish look takes off then you'll see the Mets grab onto it. Of course by then we'll all hate it.

The man you want to speak to is Senior Vice President of Marketing & Communications David Newman. The problem is that he was hired in 2005 and likely was tasked with buiding brand equity through the new station and stadium.

He worked with MTV and the NFL, so being safely in midst of the uncreative mainstream is perhaps simply where its at for him, and outflanking the Yankees not really his goal as much as its ours.

Mets hire marketing executive David Newman
Also promote David Cohen and Paul Danforth

FLUSHING, N.Y. -- The New York Mets today named David Newman to the newly-created position of Senior Vice President, Marketing and Communications. The announcement was made by Jeff Wilpon, the Mets' COO. Newman will join the Mets next month from the United States Tennis Association, where he was Managing Director, Marketing & Communications. He will report to Dave Howard, Executive Vice President, Business Operations.
"We are excited to have David join us in this newly created position," said Howard. "David has extensive experience in marketing and business communications for first-rate sports and media entertainment organizations. His background will help our organization maximize the exciting opportunities presented by an up-and-coming team with a new regional sports network partner and a new stadium on the immediate horizon."

Newman will be responsible for the strategic development and management of the Mets' branding, image-building, marketing and business communications initiatives to drive and support ticket sales, sponsorship activation, and fan value -- including advertising, promotion, advanced media, publishing, research, broadcasting, events, and in-game entertainment.

"The Mets as a young and competitive club, and as a brand, are on the rise -- with a new network partner and stadium on deck," said Newman. "Joining the team at this juncture is truly a once-in-lifetime opportunity to play a role in diversifying and growing the connection of the Mets to current fans, new fans and partners."

Newman was a key member of the US Open senior management team, leading the promotion and publicity effort that attracted 2.5 million fans to the National Tennis Center in the past four years, and earlier this month set a new attendance record as the highest annually attended event in sports.

Newman brings to the Mets more than 20 years of sports and entertainment marketing experience. Before moving to the USTA, he spent nearly nine seasons with NFL Properties, rising to the position of Vice President, Marketing & Events, where he oversaw the League's integrated strategic marketing initiatives involving sponsors, licensees, and retailers. Prior to joining the NFL in 1992, Newman held several marketing positions in seven years at MTV. Newman also has held production, public relations and promotions positions with Madison Square Garden Network and Ogilvy & Mather.

The Mets also announced today the promotions of two other senior executives.

David Cohen has been promoted to Executive Vice President & General Counsel. "David plays a vital role in legal, human resources and corporate governance issues at the Mets and related companies and on the new stadium project," said Wilpon. "He is a key member of senior management." Cohen had been Senior Vice President & General Counsel and has been with the Mets organization since 1995.

Paul Danforth has been promoted to Senior Vice President, Corporate Sales & Services. "Paul has proven himself to be an extraordinary corporate sales executive and an invaluable member of our team," said Howard, to whom Danforth has reported since 2001. Danforth had been Vice President, Corporate Sales & Services, and has also been with the organization since 1994.
