Klassik Rawk Khampionship: LIGHTNING ROUND!

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Mar 29 2011 09:06 PM

OK, you guys and I are long sick and tired of the serpentine guess-answer style of this contest. So with three slots left to fill, we are going to finish this contest before the first pitch of the Mets season. Here's how.

In a moment, I will reveal the ARTISTS whose songs occupy the three openings (52, 59 and 89) remaining in the Top 100.

Your job will be to name the SONGS that belong in each of those slots -- and in the slots they belong. EVERYONE who has participated in the contest so far can submit 1 final answer, consisting of three songs -- and the order in which they appear -- by our deadline of noon on Friday 4/1.

In keeping with the scoring in the contest, Nos. 52 and 59 will be worth 3 points, and No. 89 4 points. But to make it extra exciting, I will award double bonus points to any contestant who turns in a perfect 3-song guess. That makes this a potential 20-point walkoff! I will award 2 points for every RIGHT SONG in the WRONG SLOT. Every WRONG SONG results in a 1-point penalty.

Make sense?

If you've been cheating, please stop now. Try not to get hung up on other people's guesses, and I'll try and refrain from commenting until noon Friday when I'll lock this thing. Anyone who misses the deadline is SOL.

Here are the artists, in Alphabetical Order:
Allman Brothers
Peter Gabriel
Led Zeppelin

Remember, give me the songs of these 3 that appear in slots 52, 59 and 89. Deadline noon Friday.

Go!

I knew there had to be another Led Zeppelin song on the list, in fact I thought they would be the band that appears twice. My strategy going forward was going to keep guessing Led Zeppelin until the end of the contest.

52 - The Allman Bros, "Melissa"
59 - Peter Gabriel, "Solsbury Hill"
89 - Led Zeppelin, "In My Time of Dying" (longest Led Zep tune in my iTunes since this list likes lengthy songs)

Sledgehammer? Did I say Sledgehammer? I meant Solsbury Hill... :) Thanks...

Looking back, I didn't realize how little Gabriel put out in the 1970s that was played on the radio. Even Shock the Monkey was in the early 1980s.

And, realized that both Zep I and Zep II came out before 1970, so amended again, as along as that is OK under the rules.

I don't know shit about Peter Gabriel and I don't recall the song title - Solsbury Hill. I could've googled him up, but that would be peeking, in my book. But I can consider Solsbury because you all picked it. I can gather from the banter that Solsbury is '70's. Here's my strategy for the lightning round. There's two or three of you that haven't picked yet and whose picks I'm waiting on because I guarantee to myself that the combined picks of those two or three will contain all the right answers.

It kinda has to be.

Although it would be HILARIOUS if something like "Moribund the Burgermeister" snuck on here over "Born to Be Wild," "Smoke on the Water," the auxilliary AC/DC, etc.

I'm not suggesting anything here but if you're concerned about that, put up a fake guess then edit it at 11:59 am Friday. Or just refrain from entering a guess until then.

By the way, I'm adding a small scoring bonus: +1 point for every RIGHT SONG, RIGHT SLOT guess up to all 3, which gets the previously announced 10-point bonus.

Re: Klassik Rawk Khampionship: LIGHTNING ROUND!

i didn't even know peter gabriel had a song out in the 70's, let alone that he's classic rock.

i'm not sure if i've ever heard of solsbury hill, but its his only 70's single that charted in the us, so it's my pick.
the allman brothers band had a bunch of singles chart in the 70s, and their highest charting, unpicked song was crazy love, so its also my pick.
and led zeppelin had a few singles as well, only two of which hadn't been picked in the contest. the higher-charting of these was d'yer mak'er, which is my final pick.

i choose my order based on the highest charting song to the lowest, thus:

52: d'yer maker - led zeppelin (20)
59: crazy love - allman brothers (28)
89: solsbury hill - peter gabriel (68)

i really can't say that i know any of these songs.

OK, it's all over, and nobody gets the 20-point bonus.

The correct answer:

52 Allman Brothers Blue Sky
59 Peter Gabriel Solsbury Hill
and with the deep album cut that nobody would guess I warned you about, Led Zeppelin with No. 89, TEN YEARS GONE

I have to say now, I dreamed up this exciting finish (just like the contest itself) while listening to Q104.3 while running on Tuesday night. It was Twofer Tuesday, yaknow, and in a new feature once an hour they let the "listeners vote" on the second song in the artist pair. Sure enough, Ten Years Gone was the choice, you could look it up (I think).

Speaking of looking it up, it can be revealed now that the my source list was the Q104.3's top 1043 songs of all-time -- only the 2007 list. I chose that one randomly thinking that maybe it would throw off would-be cheaters. Only I didn't look at the list itself very carefully, and we might have had a different contest had I chose a different year. Also, this particular year is very strange because, as you'll see (and I didn't) that die to some composition error the list is missing songs #105-149: I would guess there's a ton of our wrong choices in that field. I realized this several weeks ago and wrote the website hoping they could fill in the blanks but no dice yet. More recently I appealed to my facebook pal Ken Dashow but haven;t heard a response from him either. Sorry about that anyway.

Now I'll go correct these things.
