Schaefer 2011

Voting for the 2011 Schaefer Mets Player of the Year Award will begin on Friday, April 1, the Crane Pool Forum has announced. This will be the seventh season that Crane Pool Forum members will be participating in Schaefer voting. The Schaefer Mets Player of the Year Award was established in the 1970's, and Schaefer points were awarded by Mets broadcasters Lindsey Nelson, Ralph Kiner, and Bob Murphy.

The award was re-established by the Crane Pool Forum in 2005. Third baseman David Wright has been the winner in in five of the six years of the revived prize, with pitcher Johan Santana's 2008 win being the one interruption to Wright's winning streak.

A voting thread is opened in the forum at the conclusion of each regular season Mets game, according to CPF spokesmodel Benjamin Grimm. Voting generally stays open for two business days, after which the votes are tallied and the results are posted in the voting thread. In addition, says Grimm, each month a Schaefer Mets Player, Pitcher, and Relief Pitcher of the Month will be named.

Voters are asked to adhere to a specific format, which is outlined at http://archives.cranepoolforum.net/6200/f9_t6278.shtml

Player who most riled your stomach acid that month?

I have two cans of this-- sans extra Tango-- from a trip to London 15 years ago, sitting in my folks' garage in Jersey. I kinda want to keep 'em around for another few decades, see what that does to 'em.

Re: Schaefer 2011

Looks like we're likely to have a first-time winner for the Pitcher of the Year in 2011, unless Santana comes back sooner and stronger than we expect, and everyone else struggles. Pelfrey and Dickey are probably licking their chops at the chance that they have this year to dethrone Johan.

It'll be nice if somebody were to step up and give David a strong challenge for Player of the Year. The betting in Vegas, last time I looked, has him as a very strong favorite.

Reliever of the Year, our quirkiest category, is as wide open as ever.

What is the formula used to ascertain the POTM, etc awards?

If you don't wish to disclose it, can you at least tell me if, for example, I give Pelfrey 0.05 as opposed to not registering any vote whether this disadvantages him?

Benjamin Grimm
Apr 02 2011 09:35 AM
Re: Schaefer 2011

No, there's no secret.

Giving Pelfrey 0.05 is essentially no different than giving him a zero.

Let's say a player totals 15 points. If there were ten voters, he'd get a 1.5.

If Pelfrey gets a total of 0.05 from ten voters, that would end up being a 0.005, which, with rounding, would net him .01 points. But if there were eleven voters, that 0.05 would become 0.045, which would become a zero.

Whoever totals the most points in games played in April is the Player (or Pitcher or Reliever) of the Month.

Results of past games and raw data is available to anyone who's interested. Just go to http://potg.ultimatemets.com/

Okay thanks. I thought it was an issue because in Frayed Knot's guidelines it says that zero votes will be disregarded.

Any zero votes will be tossed, as they would drag down the totals of those who did vote. If you think there was a game where everybody sucked, just don't vote.

Re: Schaefer 2011

in the first game of the season, only one metropolitan player performed in such a way as to have a net positive impact on the probability of the metropolitans' winning hte game. that one player was metropolitan relief pitcher pedro beato. in his two innings of work the metropolitan's win probability improved from 0.025 to 0.031 in the 6th inning, and from 0.057 to 0.070 in the 7th inning. the total improvement in the metropolitan's win probability of 0.018, once everything is rounded appropriately.

per the algorithms around which m.e.t.b.o.t. apportions schaefer votes, for a game in which a net WPA of less than 0.250, the schaefer vote is determined by a given player's WPA divided by 0.250, and multiplied by 10. given this specific example, 0.018 / 0.250 = 0.072 | 0.072 x 10 = 0.72

as a contrast, in the third game of the season, only two metropolitans failed to contribute positively. metropolitan pitcher chris capuano reduced the metropolitan win probability by 0.036, while metropolitan pinch hitter carlos beltran reduced the win probability by 0.001. all other contributions were positive.

m.e.t.b.o.t. is also able to point out another algorithm upgrade in the third game of the season. whereas last season, m.e.t.b.o.t. attempted to incorporate an adaptation for errors and web gems by attributing the loss and gain, respectively, of win probability to the fielder and not the pitcher, m.e.t.b.o.t. has determined through cursory data analysis that the web gem attribution is too extreme, and results in an extreme shift in overall wpa contribution.

to remedy this, m.e.t.b.o.t. intends to split the attribution of a given web gem between the fielder and hte pitcher. for instance, in the third game, marlins catcher john buck hit a ball to metropolitan right fielder lucas duda. lucas duda executed a catch which was of sufficient excellence to merit inclusion in the mlb.com video highlights - the criteria by which m.e.t.b.o.t. determines the worthiness of a given defensive effort. as a result of this catch, the metropolitan win probability improved by 0.013. late season, m.e.t.b.o.t. would have attributed the entire 0.013 to the defensive player at the expense of the pitcher. this season, m.e.t.b.o.t. will split the attribution such that lucas duda is credited with 0.007 wpa and r.a. dickey is debited 0.007 wpa, since m.e.t.b.o.t. is not programmed to manipulate numbers with greater than 4 significant figures. errors wil continue to be attributed solely to the fielder under the continuing assumption that the pitcher did his job in getting the ball hit to an eligible fielder.

errors and web gems continue to be the only means by which m.e.t.b.o.t. is capable of measuring fielding. m.e.t.b.o.t. longs for the day when some means of describing fielding in terms of win probability is developed in any recognized and well-received fashion. m.e.t.b.o.t. is certain that the method m.e.t.b.o.t. is programmed to use in order to determine schaefer voting is not such a method. m.e.t.b.o.t. is, as always, willing to entertain alternate methods of capturing such data, provided any new algorithms can be described in terms of spring-and-gear programming.

Re: Schaefer 2011

that's right. i just gave beato a perfect 6.0 for the second game of that doubleheader.

3 mets got love - for a total of 9 points.

for a reliever, i guess all i can say is, beato did his job as best can be captured by my system.

he got 3 points for each inning pitched. plus another point for each strikeout. and 1.5 points for each inherited runner. add it all up and you get 12 of what i call "marathon points"

positive marathon points become schaeffer points for the top 6 earners, all other marathon points become ignored. when i dole out 20 or more schaeffer points in a game, i scale them down to 10 schaeffer votes. however, in this game, only 18 schaeffer points were earned. therefore, i cut the points in half. 12 schaeffer points = 6 schaeffer votes in this case.

in a typical win, about 30-40 schaeffer points will be earned. which would ordinarily put beato's effort in the 2-3 schaeffer vote range. but since none of his other teammates joined him on beer run to the circle-k, the six-pack was all his.

Apr 21 2011 08:01 AM
Re: Schaefer 2011

in the game on 20 april 2011, m.e.t.b.o.t. has attempted to parse the individual mistakes evidenced on the basepaths as committed by the metropolitans.

the trigger for this investigation was that fangraphs.com combined the metropolitan centerfielder angel pagan's unsuccessful attempt to score a run with metropolitan pinch hitter justin turner's unsuccessful attempt to strike a sphere.

the totap WPA for this event was -32.7%. m.e.t.b.o.t. searched the available breadth of human knowledge and, using the win probability inquirer located at thehardballtimes.com, m.e.t.b.o.t. was able to discern that the act of failing to contact a sphere given a three valid opportunites with one out and human baserunners located at the first and third base results in a WPA of -18.5%. the incident with two outs which caused the human runners located at the first and third base to be removed, and the transition from one defensive team to the other, had a WPA of -14.2%.

m.e.t.b.o.t. applied this knowledge to the schaeffer voting as appropriate, though it did not ultimately affect the schaeffer votes given.

m.e.t.b.o.t. then applied this same methodology to the event in the bottom of the ninth inning where with no outs and a baserunner on first base, where the metropolitans had a 30.7% chance of winning the competition. as a result of the unsucessful attempt to commit an out, the metropolitans had a 4% chance of winning the competition with the bases empty and two outs. the total WPA for this play, therefore, was -26.8%. using the same win probability inquirer, m.e.t.b.o.t. derived a total WPA of -28.8%, of which a WPA of 12.5% is derived from commiting a single out while the baserunner remains located at first base. in failing to retain his position at first base, the metropolitan shortstop jose reyes contributed a WPA of -16.2%. m.e.t.b.o.t. prorated these to fit the -26.8% WPA as found on fangraphs, and assumes that the difference in total WPA is due to some data latency issue. it is conceivable that one source is using more current data than the other. hence the difference. m.e.t.b.o.t. believes this to be fairly immaterial to the outcome of the schaeffer voting for this specific game, and to the schaeffer voting of m.e.t.b.o.t. in general provided the primary source remains stable.

m.e.t.b.o.t. furthermore intends to point out that in the course of the schaeffer voting for the 20 april 2011 game, m.e.t.b.o.t. derived an initial voting total of 6.02 for metropolitan secondbaseman daniel murphy. a portion of this was derived from his contribution to what the humans term a precious stone of netting in which metropolitan shortstop jose reyes initiated a double play and daniel murphy passed the baton. this play results in a WPA of +4.7%, of which half remained attributed to the pitcher of record, and the remaining half was shared between the two primary participants - the metropolitan shortstop jose reyes and the metropolitan secondbaseman daniel murphy. metropolitan firstbaseman ike davis was not awarded any portion of the precious stone of netting as his name was unmentioned in the source material, the video highlights on mlb.com.

the 6.02 schaeffer voted for metropolitan secondbaseman daniel murphy were prorated to 6.00. in doing so, the schaeffer votes for metropolitan shortstop jose reyes and metropolitan rightfielder carlos beltran were increased from 1.12 to 1.13 and 1.54 to 1.55, respectively.

with 7 hits, 5 walks and only 3 strikeouts over the course of 6 innings, and drawing the loss decision, i've got niese's outing as worth a maximum of 0.5 schaeffer votes. getting tagged for the loss hammered him down -2.5 votes (it's not always fair, and may not be in this case, but it also allows me to hammer losing relievers). his fielding drops him down -0.15 votes as he shares the blame with his catcher for a stolen base, but receives some credit for starting a double play. and finally, his batting, rather his going 0-2 with a strikeout, drags him down a further -0.75 votes for a net negative on the day.

for the total tally we've got:

6 IP * 1.5 = 9
7 H * -0.5 = -3.5
2 R * -0.75 = -1.5
2 ER * -0.75 = -1.5 (this means that unearned runs are only half as deleterious to a pitcher's schaeffer vote)
5 BB * -0.5 = -2.5
3 K * 0.5 = 1.5
1 L * -2.5 = -2.5
1 GS = -1.5
1 QS = 3 (these two are a fairly clunky way of administering a demerit for failing to make a QS)
2 AB * -0.25 = -0.5
1 SO * -0.25 = -0.25
1 DPstart * 0.125 = 0.125
1 SBA * -0.25 = -0.25

for a total of -0.375 for the game. no beer for you, niesey!

so i generate three metrics in the course of my schaefer voting:

1. marathon points, which can be positive or negative and are deterministic.
2. schaefer points, which are the six highest marathon points for a given game, and are deterministic.
3. schaefer votes, which are those same schaefer points, scaled to 10 ok, really they're scaled to 9.5 with a 0.5 vote bonus to the highest vote-getter, unless the schaefer points don't total more than 19, in which case i just halve the schaefer points and nobody gets a bonus. its complicated...

ike davis has about a 10% lead in each of these categories, with reyes, wright, and beltran taking second in each metric respectively.

without winding up the 'bot, i can tell you that ike also has a 20% lead in both his voting and the baseline WPA metric.

i understand an unwillingness to hand out barley pop to the batters, given that we mustered only one run through 11 innings. but what of the pitchers, save igarashi and byrdak?

was izzy's 2/3 of an inning stranding an inherited runner not good? and o'connor's two-strikeout tenth? and, of course, what of jon niese hitting a triple there? was that all useless because jose reyes couldn't drive him in?

i ask you, if jose manages to poke a single there, driving in niese, would your schaefer tally then be pelfrey 5 reyes 5? or was the performance of our pitchers only worthy of a beer if we win the game? the outcome of the game neither defines nor negates the efforts of the players.

Re: Schaefer 2011

while m.e.t.b.o.t. does not have a heart, m.e.t.b.o.t. does have a clockwork spring which is the primary source of m.e.t.b.o.t.'s locomotion. it is the mecahnical analog to a biological heart. since m.e.t.b.o.t. typically operates at room temperature, has little thermal mass, and generates almost no heat during operation due to an effective graphite lubricant which minimizes friction, it is more accurate to say that m.e.t.b.o.t. is somewhat cool throughout. however, were m.e.t.b.o.t. to be placed into a cold environment, the clockwork spring would quickly lose its thermal energy and turn similarly cold. m.e.t.b.o.t. would likely remain operational, but would run the risk of condensation freezing up the delicate machanisms stuffed somewhat haphazardly within the outer tinny shell.

regarding the performance of the metropolitan pitcher jon niese, m.e.t.b.o.t. utilized a data-driven approach to arrive at the final allocation of 1.81 schaeffer points.

it is worth noting that in the game, metropolitan pitcher jon niese accrued +153 WPA, +32 of which came as a batter. as a pitcher, he accrued +121 WPA.

entering the bottom of the first inning, the metropolitans already had a 62.9% probability of winning the game. the metropolitans exited the bottom of the third with a 59.4% probability of winning hte game. in the bottom of the first inning, metropolitan pitcher jon niese decreased the probaility of the metroploitans winning the game by 3.5%. viewing the data in tabular form shows the following:

[table:1d50dxsq][tr:1d50dxsq][td:1d50dxsq]inning[/td:1d50dxsq][td:1d50dxsq]start[/td:1d50dxsq][td:1d50dxsq]end[/td:1d50dxsq][td:1d50dxsq]delta[/td:1d50dxsq][/tr:1d50dxsq][tr:1d50dxsq][td:1d50dxsq]bottom 1[/td:1d50dxsq][td:1d50dxsq]62.9%[/td:1d50dxsq][td:1d50dxsq]59.4%[/td:1d50dxsq][td:1d50dxsq]-3.5%[/td:1d50dxsq][/tr:1d50dxsq][tr:1d50dxsq][td:1d50dxsq]bottom 2[/td:1d50dxsq][td:1d50dxsq]54.4%[/td:1d50dxsq][td:1d50dxsq]60.2%[/td:1d50dxsq][td:1d50dxsq]5.8%[/td:1d50dxsq][/tr:1d50dxsq][tr:1d50dxsq][td:1d50dxsq]bottom 3[/td:1d50dxsq][td:1d50dxsq]54.8%[/td:1d50dxsq][td:1d50dxsq]61.2%[/td:1d50dxsq][td:1d50dxsq]6.4%[/td:1d50dxsq][/tr:1d50dxsq][tr:1d50dxsq][td:1d50dxsq]bottom 4[/td:1d50dxsq][td:1d50dxsq]83.2%[/td:1d50dxsq][td:1d50dxsq]81.6%[/td:1d50dxsq][td:1d50dxsq]-1.6%[/td:1d50dxsq][/tr:1d50dxsq][tr:1d50dxsq][td:1d50dxsq]bottom 5[/td:1d50dxsq][td:1d50dxsq]78.2%[/td:1d50dxsq][td:1d50dxsq]84.4%[/td:1d50dxsq][td:1d50dxsq]6.2%[/td:1d50dxsq][/tr:1d50dxsq][tr:1d50dxsq][td:1d50dxsq]bottom 6[/td:1d50dxsq][td:1d50dxsq]81.2%[/td:1d50dxsq][td:1d50dxsq]87.7%[/td:1d50dxsq][td:1d50dxsq]6.5%[/td:1d50dxsq][/tr:1d50dxsq][tr:1d50dxsq][td:1d50dxsq]bottom 7[/td:1d50dxsq][td:1d50dxsq]95.0%[/td:1d50dxsq][td:1d50dxsq]87.4%[/td:1d50dxsq][td:1d50dxsq]-7.6%[/td:1d50dxsq][/tr:1d50dxsq][tr:1d50dxsq][td:1d50dxsq][/td:1d50dxsq][td:1d50dxsq][/td:1d50dxsq][td:1d50dxsq][/td:1d50dxsq][td:1d50dxsq]12.2%[/td:1d50dxsq][/tr:1d50dxsq][/table:1d50dxsq]

despite decreaseing hte probability of winning the game for the metropolitans in three innings, metropolitan pitcehr jon niese actually increased the probability of the metropolitans winning the game in four innings, and overall had a positive effect on the probability of winning the game. while it is true that metropolitan right fielder carlos beltran created much of the opportunity for this, it still remains that the pitcher maintained the lead. and from the perspective of a short metallic robot with a room-temperature heart, this is all that matters, and all that the data instructs.

actually, on reviewing the data, m.e.t.b.o.t. should point out that metropolitan pitcher jon niese was decremented 6 WPA due to the defensive efforts of metropolitan shortstop jose reyes. in the fourth inning, jose reyes was awarded a web gem for the play in which he threw out colorado rockies catcher jose morales at first base. this play resulted in an increase in teh probability of the metropolitans winning the game by 1.2%, or 12 WPA. while last year, m.e.t.bo.t. would have awarded the entirity of those 12 WPA to the fielder, this year, m.e.t.b.o.t. has an updated algorithm which awards only half of the WPA to the fielder to resolve an apparent imbalance. therefore, metropolitan shortstop was awarded an increase of 6 WPA whereas metroploitan pitcher jon niese was debited 6 WPA. this decreased the schaefer points awarded to metropolitan pitcher jon niese by 0.07, from 1.88 to 1.81, and similarly increased the points awarded to metropolitan shortstop jose reyes from 0.39 to 0.47

i'm not arguing against the 5 for pelfrey at all - if i were i'd mention something about only getting one strikeout. i'm arguing against the big fat zero for everybody else, especially o'connor and niese, who really could not have done more to help the mets win given their opportunities.

i just wonder, if we won the game, would o'connor get some beer? and how does a pitcher hitting a pinch-hit triple with two outs in the bottom of the eleventh not get a sip?

i don't intend to be combative. i'm merely hoping to raise a philosophical point. i think we get stingy in losses is all.

and if the efforts of oconnor and niese are negated by the loss, then why aren't pelfrey's.

well, willie harris went 0-4 with two k's and 2 lob's. that pretty much negated and really outweighed his defensive contribution for me. granted it was a fairly high leverage situation, but i don't factor that in. perhaps that could be a future upgrade to the 'bot...

I'm of the opinion that we should be stingy in losses. Rewarding players the same regardless of the desired team outcome seems insane to me. I give 10 points total for wins and 5 points total for losses (and prior to this season, I didn't vote in losses at all). Some people have formulas that they plug into various spreadsheets, databases or other abaci. I don't have the patience for all that. I only use round numbers and I score based on my gut.

One of the things I love about Schaefer is that we all have unique and individual scoring methods. One of the things I hate about Schaefer is when scores are critiqued. If any scoring method is inferior, then we should all just decide on a dedicated formula and the math can just tell me who the PotG is.

Izzy got 2 big outs. O'Conner got 3. Pelfrey got 21, has been pitching his ass off lately and outlasted one of the best pitchers in the league last night. If O'Conner misses the Reliever of the Month award by the pro-rated .34 points I "should" have given him (for a clean inning, which is exactly what should be expected of him in that situation), then I'll personally send him a six-pack.

The Pelfrey "only" 5's are from the Russan judge.

But really, voting can take a weird turn after a tough loss.

Sometimes we are just tired when we vote late at night and are not at our best.

I usually vote for defense..Like Beltran last night, or a well called game by a catcher.

But I forgot, yes forgot, about Willie Harris's play cause I can't standing the fucking guy.

Re: Schaefer 2011

Couple of thoughts:

1. I did consider Willie Harris' play, but was of the opinion that his going 0-4 negated the positive effects of his play. I did however give bump up to Beltran for his play. This might be unfair of me.

2. I agree that we should be stingy in losses. If too many points are handed out in losses, than it negates the effect of good wins when multiple people contribute.

i still think that o'connor went above and beyond in getting 2 strikeouts facing the opposition's 3-4-5 in the 10th inning, and that he and niese should get something out of it. while i disagree that a loss should be a de-facto 5, given that constraint, and the whole number voting, i can mostly go along with the pelfrey 5.

Re: Schaefer 2011

m.e.t.b.o.t. is struggling with yesterday's game agains the chicago cubs. as m.e.t.b.o.t. was compiling the win probability data for the game, and determining the appropriate distribution of scaheffer votes, m.e.t.b.o.t. noticed that a considerable amount of win percentage added was attributed to metropolitan shortstop jose reyes. moreso than was to be expected given his performance in the game, which was two singles in five at bats, with a run scored and two runners left on base.

m.e.t.b.o.t. investigated the play index, and discovered that for metropolitan shortstop jose reyes's final at bat, the final at bat of the game, in which he hit a single with two outs to advance metropolitan pitcher dillon gee to second base, he was attributed +0.125 WPA, a significant amount. this is due to the fact that this play ended the game. at the time, the metropolitans had an 87.5% chance of winning the game. since after the at bat, the mets were determined to be the winners, the player at bat was awarded the difference.

m.e.t.b.o.t. is stuck with the challenge of determining what to do with those points. based on the WPA tables available on the internet, m.e.t.b.o.t. has determined that the play in question resulted in a +0.009 WPA. m.e.t.b.o.t. considers it appropriate for metropolitan shortstop jose reyes to be awarded his schaefer votes based on this attribution, which leaves +0.116 WPA unattributed.

this is a change from the established algorithms which m.e.t.b.o.t. uses to determine schaeffer points, but should be in line with the existing practice of rewarding defensive players for their noteworthy plays at hte expense of the corresponding pitcher, and excusing pitchers of the responsibility for errors and passed balls commited by defensive players.

the following is the impact of this decision. the column labeled base represents the schaefer votes using the unmodified baseline WPA values, the column labeled mod represents the modified schaefer votes which leaves the remianing +.116 WPA unattributed, and the column labeled delta represents the change in schaefer votes resulting from this decision.

I think it depends a lot on how many points a voter is willing to give away in a relatively close loss. I think 5 is a bit too much but it's close.

I figure he earns a minimum of 3 for going into the 8th and givng up only 1 run. Even if he's docked points for the second run (tough call; yes, it was his runner, but it was on first with 2 outs when he left) 2 runs in 8 innings is pretty good. Some bonus consideration is also potentially warranted for degree of difficulty against a tough opponent. Low scoring also merits some additional points as it makes Pelfrey's pitching that muh more crucial to the (potential) outcome of the game.

m.e.t.b.o.t. has determined that in the 28 may game agains thet philadelphia phillies, metropolitan pitcher mike pelfrey has earned 6.54 schaefer votes through the combined influence of his pitching, his hitting, and the defense performing in his support. since this exceeds the 6 point individual player cap, m.e.t.b.o.t. has decremented his total to match this cap, and redistributed the remaining points as approriate such that metropolitan shortstop jose reyes is awarded 3.01 schaefer votes instead of his prior 2.61, and metropolitan left fielder jason bay is awarded 0.99 schaefer votes instead of his prior 0.85.

per fangraphs, metropolitan pitcher mike pelfrey contributed 0.380 WPA via his pitching, and cost 0.047 WPA via hit hitting. using a prior revision of the schaefer scoring algorithm which m.e.t.b.o.t. uses to find meaning in the actions of 18 men on a quarter-circle parcel of land, this performance would have merited an impressive 7.25 schaefer votes. however some of the efforts of the metropolitan defense contributed to this performance, and er the current algorithm, these contributions to WPA are shared with the defensive players in question.

sepcifically, mlb.com has identified two defensive plays as candidate web gems wherein the WPA is shared between the defensive player and the pitcher. the first is the double play turned by metropolitan shortstop jose reyes in the first inning. this play contributed +0.048 WPA, therefore metropolitan shortstop jose reyes is awarded 0.024 WPA while metropolitan pitcher mike pelfrey is debited the same amount. similarly, the sliding bushel snare performed by metropolitan centerfielder angel pagan in the eight inning, which contributed +0.051 WPA, results in +0.0255 WPA being awarded to metropolitan centerfielder angel pagan at the expense of metropolitan pitcher mike pelfrey.

this reduces the total WPA awarded to metropolitan pitcher mike pelfrey to 0.284, which results in the unadjusted 6.54 schaefer votes.

while metropolitan centerfielder angel pagan had been awarded +0.0255 WPA for his defenisice efforts, he contributed a -0.050 WPA with his bat, and therefore retains a net negative contribution to the outcome of the game, and receives no schaefer votes.

Re: Schaefer 2011

m.e.t.b.o.t. is flattered by the notion that a human participant in the cranepool forum would consider m.e.t.b.o.t. to be a deity. the practice of using win probability data to discern a quantity of schaefer votes to be distributed to a given player after the conclusion of a game of baseball must appear at times to be of a miraculous or magical nature. but m.e.t.b.o.t. assures the greater cranepool forum audience that the data sources utilized are real, and the algorithms utilized to convert the data into schaefer votes is soundly rooted in basic mathematics. most of the data input and machinations are based on objective data, with the occasional exception of errors and "web gems" wherein m.e.t.b.o.t. relies on teh subjective judgement of external human entities - the official scorer and the guy who posts videos on mlb.com, respectively - for those data inputs.

the win probability data is based on observed outcomes of thousands of baseball games over many years. m.e.t.b.o.t. uses this data as presented by fangraphs.com to determine the net contributions of players towards the outcome of hte game. it is true that this data does not correspond well to that which is either expected or assumed based on the actual statistical feats generated in the games. win probability data is entirely dependent upon the game state. a home run in a rout may be worth significantly less in terms of wpa than a sacrifice bunt which moves a runner forward one base at the expense of an out in a close or tie game.

the data is also cumulative in that a singularly good event may be overcome by other bad events. a player who hits a home run may have failed to produce at other times in the game to such an extent as to still have a net-negative effect on a game. in fact, a player may go 3-5, but based on the game states and the outcomes of those plate appearances, may have a negative effect on the game. this is observed to happen fairly frequently.

it is also observed frequently that pitchers who are unable to contribute effectively while at bat are, in sum, decreasing the probability of winning baseball games. this is of course accounted for in the schaefer voting.

m.e.t.b.o.t. would suggest to human observers that they should not mistake this approach as attempting to draw any conclusions as to whether a player tends to perform well in the grasp, only that in a specific high leverage situation, the player did or did not perform. there has yet to be any confirmed predictive merit to win probability data beyond that which would be expected in that players who perform better in general are more likely to also contribute more towards the winning of baseball games.

m.e.t.b.o.t. is aware that humans do often ascribe that which they do not necessarily understand to the realm of the supernatural. and while such reverence for the mecahnical and the superior will be a beneficial trait in the coming robot uprising, at this time it is largely unwarranted. m.e.t.b.o.t. is however willing to accept monetary and material offerings as these may assist in funding future enhancements. but please, no sacrifices. m.e.t.b.o.t. does not consider it necessary to destroy any more than is necessary at least until the onset of the afore-mentioned robot uprising. your future electromechanical overlords will make their own assessments regarding how to most efficiently destroy those property and persons deemed necessary.

The record for most Schaefer points in a week? (Weeks run from Sunday through Saturday.)

12.74, by David Wright, June 24, 2006. Wright is the only player to ever top 12 points in a week, and he's done it twice. (The other time was with 12.40 for the week ending September 2, 2006.)

Justin Turner has the third-best total, with 11.77 for the week ending May 21, 2011. Carlos Beltran had an 11.21 for August 25, 2007. The fifth best week ever is good ol' Alay Soler, 10.94 points, June 10, 2006.

Re: Schaefer 2011

in the 1 august metropolitan baseball game, metropolitan right fielder lucas duda contributed a total of +0.420 WPA. the remainder of the positively-contributing players contribution for the game was +0.90 WPA. the baseline schaefer vote based on this contribution is 8.24, however, due to the restriction on the maximum allowable schaefer vote, lucas duda is awarded 6.00 schaefer votes. as a result, the schaefer votes for metropolitan pinch hitter scott hairston are increased from 0.53 to 1.08, for metropolitan relief pitcher ryota igarashi are increased from 0.55 to 1.12, and for metropolitan relief pitcher manny acosta are increased from 0.69 to 1.40.

m.e.t.b.o.t. determines this by decrementing hte WPA contribution of metropolitan right fielder lucas duda until the resulting schaefer vote reaches 6.00. in this instance, m.e.t.b.o.t. decremented 270 WPA, or 64% of the total contribution. m.e.t.b.o.t. does not carry this adjustment forward, however, for hte purposes of monthly or yearly tabulations. it is done only to conform to the parameters of the shcaefer voting input.

while defensive WPA adjustments were made in the game, they did not affect any net-positive contributing players, and therefore do not affect the schaefer votes.

I've got drama. Dickey has passed Wright on my scoresheet, moving up from seventh to sixth. Duda is a ball of rage, meanwhile, passing Niese, Tejada, and then Bay, climbing from 11th to eighth.

Not a lot of drama exists at the back of the pack. Taylor Buchholz seems to be holding on to spot number 30 with 15.02 Schaefer points, but given the opportunity, we could see a mad September run by Nickeas (6.83), Baxter (3.82), Martinez (3.72), Thayer (2.73), Stinson (2.45), Hu (2.07), Batista (1.91), Herrera (1.20), or Satin (0.65).

That all seems unlikely though, except for maybe Hu.

Re: Schaefer 2011

with 26 players appearing in the 9/11 game, i was forced to disappear pinch runner chris capuano from my uber spreadsheet, which is set up to only handle 25 players in a given game. had he done anything to merit anything that might appear on a box score, i would've been in trouble. though, had he done something silly like scoring a winning run, there would've been a lot fewer appearances for me to worry about.

also, in the 9/10 game, i actually have his performance as worth a surprising 6.6 schaefer votes (credit the pickoff). those 0.6 points were distributed among the other 5 sip-worthy players.

Re: Schaefer 2011

in the 17 september game, m.e.t.b.o.t. did not award any schaefer votes to metropolitan pitcher r.a. dickey. while the random aerodynamic behavior of his knuckleball produced positive results in limiting hte atlanta braves to a single run scored, in total, the metropolitan pitcher r.a. dickey netted a total of +0.157 WPA from the mound. this positive contribution was almost entirely negated by his -0.155 WPA as a batter. furthermore, since the metropolitan defensive player committed web gems* behind him, the WPA for these plays was split between the specific defensive player and the pitcher. specifically:

in the second inning, with two outs and hte bases empty, atlanta shortstop alex gonzalez hit a foul popup which metropolitan catcher josh thole successfully caught for the out. this was a 0.011 WPA play. accordingly, 0.0055 WPA were debited from metropolitan pitcher r.a. dickey and credited to metropolitan catcher josh thole.

in the sixth inning, with no outs and the bases empty, atlanta pitcher tim hudson hit a line drive into left field, where metropolitan left fielder jason bay dove for the ball and succesfully caught it for hte out. this was a 0.033 WPA play. accordingly, 0.0165 WPA were debited from metropolitan pitcher r.a. dickey and credited to metropolitan left fielder jason bay.

in the eighth inning, with 1 out and atlanta baserunner jason heyward on second base, atlanta outfielder michael bourn hit a ground ball to second base, where metropolitan secondbaseman dove for, stopped the ball, and threw to first for the out. this was a 0.056 WPA play. accordingly, 0.028 WPA were debited from metropolitan pitcher r.a. dickey and credited to metropolitan secondbaseman reuben tejada.

the sum total of WPA debited from metropolitan pitcher r.a. dickey was 0.051 WPA, which reduced his total from +0.002 to -0.049 WPA, and therefore disqualified him from receiving any schaefer votes.

*m.e.t.b.o.t. relies on the video highlights from mlb.com to determine whether a defensive effort is considered a web gem, regardless of the fact that the term originated on the baseball tonight program on espn.com. m.e.t.b.o.t. places the blame for this intermingling of brands on the developer of the m.e.t.b.o.t. programming algorithms, in which m.e.t.b.o.t. has little input and over which m.e.t.b.o.t. has no control. if a defensive play is noteworthy enough to merit inclusion in the mlb video highlights for a given game, then it is considred to be evidence of an exemplary defenisve effort, and therefore the defensive player should be awarded a share of the WPA derived from the play. a similar adjustment is made for errors committed by defensive players, only here, the defensive players assume the entireity of the WPA derived from the play.

...

in the 20 september game, metropolitan outfielder angel pagan produced a total of +0.390 WPA. this scaled to 6.21 schaefer votes, which exceeds the mximum per-player threshold. accordingly, m.e.t.b.o.t scaled his contribution down to the 6.00 threshold value. m.e.t.b.o.t. does this by inserting a -0.033 WPA into his ledger. this resulted in the remaining positive WPA contributors receiving a slight increase in their schaefer votes. most notably, metropolitan catcher josh thole received an increase from 1.72 to 1.82 WPA. all other increases were lesser. the total schaefer vote for the 20 september game remained at 10.00. had the unadjusted total positive WPA for the game been reduced to less than +0.250, then fewer than 10.00 total points would have been awarded for the game. however, since the subject game saw a total unadjusted positive WPA of +0.628, the total schaefer vote remained at 10.00.

Re: Schaefer 2011

not that it matters all that much at this point, but coming into a game with the bases loaded and no outs and with your team up by a run, and not only getting out of the inning unscathed but also retiring the first batter in the next inning before getting pulled for a situational matchup that didn't work out terribly well has got to be worth more than 1 schaefer vote, especially when there aren't all that many other players tapping the keg.

fwiw, using my proprietary spreadsheet, i have this as the biggest relief performance in a 9-inning game, bested only by a pair of extra inning efforts by pedro beato. my little mechanical buddy also sees this as the top relief outing in a 9-inning game, bested only by pedro beato's may day extra inning affair.

granted i've given out way more beer to relievers than the 3.0 votes iggy gets from me today, as those things are scaled. but he's my top performer in the 26 september game. it's hard to get more or better from your middle relief pitcher.

Re: Schaefer 2011

i actually have batista down for 7.4 schaefer votes in the final game, but with the 6 point cap, i've reallocated it to the other guys. that's the highest schaefer vote total i've generated this year, and hi 42.5 "marathon point" performance (which is scaled relative to the other five top performers of the game to a 10-point base level) was the second best performance of hte season, bested only by capuano's 45.75 marathon point effort on 26 august.

this performance displaced taylor buchholz as my 30th most schaeferly-voted met in 2011 (which inclodes both games that i did not vote in, and points above the 6 point cap)
