1. Mets beat the Phillies, 7-1.
2. Phillies lose to the Mets, 7-1.
3. Yankees lose to the Twins, 5-4, in 10 innings, after blowing a four-run lead in the eighth.

Goochie! Goochie!

Oh, and Milwaukee hangs on to beat Atlanta 1-0, making our triple a quad.

The MFY loss a direct result of Girardi retardedly overplaying his 8th inning hand.

Yeah, Yanx fans (and apparently now the manager) have become enamored with what they like to refer to as "the formula": starting pitcher for 6 or 7 innings, then designated specialists for the 7th (Joba) 8th (Soriano) and 9th (Mariano) innings. That such a format worked for them so well in '96 when it was 6-2-1 (starter, Rivera, Wettland) they think the fact that the team was finally "smart enough" (despite very public objections by the GM) to cough up $35 million plus a draft pick for a closer willing enough to swallow his pride and become Mariano's caddy in order to re-create a modern-day equivalent that it's destined to be fool-proof.

Well last night it wasn't. Sabathia was pulled after 7 despite working on a 4-0 shutout but Soriano immediately started walking the ballpark. When Girardi finally brought in David Robertson w/the bases juiced in an attempt to get the finial out and hold the Twins at 1 run he was greeted by a bases-clearing bloop of a double that tied the game at 4. Rivera pitched a 1-hit 9th but then it was 'Now what Batman?' time and they lost it in the 10th.

I think that's the first Minnesota win at Yanqui Stadium since Zolio Versailles was manning SS for the Twinkies but I'll have to check on that to be sure. Joe Nathan even managed to take in the sight of pinstripes and somehow NOT choke away the save in the bottom of the 10th.

Re: Triple Happiness in 2011

I declared my quadruple happiness on facebook and people (non-Mets folks) are congratulating me. They probably think I got a new job, beat a terrible disease, or am expecting quadruplets. Now I'm feeling a little sheepish and don't know if I should come clean that this is baseball happiness.

That formula shit is maddening because it necessarily introduces more elements than necessary from a finite set. I'm happy to see it biting the Yankees and not my team, but I'm hesitating to pat that dog on the rump lest he turn and bite me.

Because he's been biting me the last three or four seasons.

What would be more concerning to me is that Girardi has now used 41 year old Rivera in 4/5 games. (12, 3, 14, 13 pitches respectively) Including bringing him in for one batter (with the tie run on deck, the first instance of a save) of the 10-6 game that the bullpen was letting get out of hand against the Tigers.

Re: Triple Happiness in 2011

Oh yeah, over-adherence to a strict reliever role-call is hardly confined to the Yanx.
Their fans simply believe that:
a) they discovered it
b) seeing as how they're the chosen ones, such a formula works better for them than for anyone else and therefore is something that should be purposely set-up (with mega-million dollar purchases if necessary) in advance rather than as a result of evolving performances, and should be used that way with strict regularity.

Expectations like that and the desire to avoid built-in second guesses can then effect the manager's in-game decisions.

I'll be happy to make a baseball related comment so you don't have to be the one who comes clean (not literally).

Re: Triple Happiness in 2011

It just seems that given 30 seconds with a big league manager, you shoudl be able to ask him

(1) why use his second and third best releivers un-necessarily, and then if your best guy gets in trouble in the ninth, you've got nothing but the back end (or nobody) to pick him up.
(2) if your next best guy gets in trouble in the eighth (as hap'd yesterday), why are you bailing him out with David Robertson and not Rivera?

Here's hoping that four months from now Jerry Girardi is blaming all his losses on his inablity to establish a consistent eighth-inning guy.

Re: Triple Happiness in 2011

Girardi's remarks after the game were direct from 8th Inning Loserville.

He said he used Soriano in the 8th so as to avoid using Mariano in the 9th! ("I have to protect my closer, that's why I have an 8th inning guy.") He said the plan was to have used Soriano in the 8th, and if were still scoreless, turn it over to David Robertson (aka, "the 6th-inning guy") in the 9th.

Why wouldn't he flip-flop that? Because the 9th inning is for Mariano. Can you believe this retard?

I'm not making this up.
