For the opening day honor, Teufel hands the ball to Dillon Gee.

For the oldest guy on the team, Raul Chavez looks pretty slick. Lutz, on the other hand, simply needs a new head, but fast.

I guess they're holding that 25th spot for Duda.

Or Ratliff.
He isn't on the Bingy roster (see other thread) either.
Maybe they're waiting to see how well/ quickly he recovers from surgery to determine where he'll start the season.

Yeah, you're mostly right. AAA teams get 24 players, AA teams get 24 (and strangely drop to 23 after the first month until August 10). A-ball teams get 25.

The lower levels get even more guys, as seen here.

Re: Your 2011 Teufelo Bisons

The Buffalo Biceps had their backs against the wall yesterday, losing starter Boofalo Bonser to an unspecified injury with two out in the fourth. But the pen shut them down the rest of the way for a 2-1 victory over Pawtucket.

PlayerIPHRERBBSOHR
Bonser3.2311240
De La Torre (W, 2-0)1.2000030
O'Connor (H, 1)1.2000100
Alvarez, Ma (H, 1)0.2100000
Igarashi (S, 1)1.1000020

Jose De La Torre is unscored on in three games and 4 2/3 innings thus far, holding opponents to a .118 average. Michael O'Conner is also untouched in two games and 3 2/3 innings with an .091 average ag'in'. Ryota Igarashi heads down the thruway with his record additionally unblemished after two games and 3 1/3 innings. No hits allowed whatsoever for the Chosen Child of Chiba.

The Buffs are 2-2. Raul Chavez threw out two would-be basestealers and has given up only one steal so far in five attempts. He is breathing down Nickeas' neck, I think. Breathing fire.

They've improved the mugshots in the International League since last week.

Anyhow, Fernando Martinez --- who I'd love to see making Willie Harris sweat --- has been out three of the last four games with a tender hammie.

The temperature has been frigid the last few days, so I wouldn't want to see him risk a pulled muscle either.
But that didn't stop Mejia from throwing another 6 2/3 scoreless innings tonight.

Re: Your 2011 Teufelo Bisons

Best Mets news from Wednesday:

Jennry Mejia, only 22, still has not been scored upon in two starts for the Buffalo Bisons this season.

The New York Mets' prospect tacked another 6-2/3 innings of shutout pitching to the six from last week's no-decision in the Herd's 4-0 victory over the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees on Wednesday night at PNC Field.

Mejia, a 6-foot, 205-pound right-hander from the Dominican Republic, allowed only three hits and three walks while striking out five as he earned his first victory of the season. Relievers Michael O'Connor, Jose De La Torre and Manny Acosta completed the shutout.

Re: Your 2011 Teufelo Bisons

The Bisons are trying to emulate the Mets. In the 1st game of today's DH (7 innings), the Bisons were no-hit until the bottom of the 7th when Kirk Nieuwhenhaus hit a leadoff HR. But in the top of the 8th and Manny Acosta pitching: walk, sac, throwing error by Acosta on a pick-off attempt, sac fly (lead run scores without a hit).

Nick Evans HR'd in the bottom of the 8th to tie it again. Paulino has made 2 throwing errors. Evans with a walk-off HR in the 10th to win it.

Nick Evans, digging himself into his (seemingly annual) depressed-I-got-farmed-out hole:

Through 62 plate appearances: .202 / .207 / .369 // .576.

And that's while co-leading the team with four homers.

Bisons rescue sharp Schwinden with late rally
By Mike Harrington
News Sports Reporter
Published: May 11, 2011, 10:22 PM

Chris Schwinden is becoming the revelation of the Buffalo Bisons' season.

Just over a month ago, the 24-year-old right-hander began the season at Double-A Binghamton. In the bullpen. There were simply no starts available with rotations filled in New York and Buffalo, pushing some arms back to Double-A.

Things have quickly changed in the Mets' chain. There are injuries in the New York rotation that have caused an exodus in Buffalo. And two Tommy John surgeries later, room has quickly opened in Triple-A as well.

Schwinden came to Buffalo on April 16 for what was supposed to be a spot start and left most of his clothes four hours East. He's had to get them sent here because he's not going anywhere now that he's suddenly become the Herd's No. 1 starter.

"I'm not wearing the same clothes every day so that's kind of nice," Schwinden joked after pitching 5 1/3 no-hit innings in Wednesday's 5-3 win over the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees in Coca-Cola Field. "It's really turned out. Everybody has welcomed me and playing here is unbelievable. It's turned out for the best."

Schwinden's no-hitter was broken up when Luis Nunez looped a single to right-center that center fielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis short-hopped. The Yankees scored twice in the inning to knock Schwinden from the game and put him in a 2-0 hole.

But his offense rescued him with a run in the sixth and four in the seventh -- all after two out -- to secure the Bisons' second straight win. Val Pascucci and Luis Hernandez had two RBIs apiece, with Hernandez's two-run single in the seventh the game's key hit.

"He bumped his head a little bit in that [sixth] inning but he pitched great, had a couple broken-bat singles against him," said manager Tim Teufel. "Certainly we'd like to spit the hook right there where he doesn't get on the hook. It was great to see the offense come back."

Schwinden (2-1) entered the game with a 2.00 earned-run average that was fifth in the International League and left it at 2.20. He has given up two runs or less in five of his six starts.

He retired 16 of the first 19 men he faced (there were two walks and one error). After Nunez's hit, Scranton's Jesus Montero then broke the scoreless tie with a broken-bat RBI single to right and Justin Maxwell's RBI single up the middle ended Schwinden's night.

"Tonight it started to click a little more," Schwinden said. "But it looks like it just ran out. Nick [catcher Mike Nickeas] called a great game and I owe it all to him. I couldn't do it without great calling from a catcher."

It's not like Schwinden, the Mets' 22nd-round pick in 2008 out of Fresno State, is some unknown. Over the winter, Baseball America listed him as the pitcher with the best command in the Mets' organization in its annual Best Tools issue, a credit mostly to his cut fastball. And he struck out 69 last year in Double-A in 79 1/3 innings while walking just 19 but was still just 3-6 with a 5.48 ERA.

So what's different?

"He's been pitching down in the zone, throws that cutter well and moves the ball in and out of the strike zone effectively," Teufel said. "He's really mixing up his pitches. He looks like he belongs out there. He's not timid at all. He's very aggressive and it shows up."

dots The teams wrap up their series today at 1 (TWC 13, Radio 1520 AM) as Buffalo's Josh Stinson (1-3) gets the start. The game was scheduled to be televised nationally on SNY but the Mets' flagship network will instead show the parent club's 3 p.m. make-up game at Colorado.

Buffalo's Lucas Duda missed his third straight game with a sore back. Fellow outfielder Fernando Martinez was also out of the lineup, but Teufel said that was just a day off and he could play today.

Re: Your 2011 Teufelo Bisons

More interesting is Schwinden. Pitching well and perhaps not only has earned a steady spot at Buffalo, he could be 6th or 7th on the Major League Depth chart?

Also, DePodesta mentioned "at least 100 IP above A" as a prerequisite before considering promotion. Both Schwinden and Cohoon have met this.

Re: Your 2011 Teufelo Bisons

The Bisons briefly reversed some losing ways, ripping Indianapolis tonight, 15-2. In the ninth innning, Indianapolean releiver Dan Meyer walked the bases loaded and punked Jesus Feliciano. Luis Rivera, the disciple who immediately followed Jesus, did what no Met does any more and grandslammed it. He didn't even break a foot doin' it.

Duda and Pascucci also homered, and Mischie gave up one run through seven. It was all good. Everybody hit except sad sack catcher Raul Chavez. The Mets are getting a manly .306 / 342 / .444 // .787 in 18 games from Salomon Mariquez, but Chavez, Dusty Ryan, and Mike Nickeas are all int he sub-.200 club.

Pascucci has lit up AAA with several organizations, but hasn't seen the bigs since 2004. You'd think one of those teams would have thrown him a bone and given him a few September ABs, or a spot in an injury replacement.
