I don't really understand the appeal of awards shows, at least the whole giving out the awards part. Performances can be good, knowing that someone was considered worthy of an award can be helpful, but watching awards handed out doesn't appeal to me in the least.

Because so much about the psychology behind consumption, particularly among the young, is about being in X camp, as opposed to Y camp, and having your camp validated --- either by their inclusion or disclusion --- generates interested and fuels more consumption.

Yeah, this can't be a "kids these days" thing. These shows have been popular forever.

I certainly didn't mean to suggest that it's a youth-only thing, only to use them to underscore the point.
