i wouldn't mind the time off... i probably would mind the paylessness, especially if it were both protracted and, most importantly, not retroactively replenished. but the time off would be nice.

plus, i'm supposed to go on travel next week, and i'd just so much rather not.

how does the little one react when you need to travel for work and are gone for a few days?

dunno. i'm not around to see. :p

i think for the most part he takes it well. he doesn't spend all day crying that i'm not around. i think he may get a little anxious and confused when i'm not there at the corners of the day, but to be honest i imagine that it's difficult to tease that apart from the added stress that he may be picking up from mrs.mm who then no longer has a helper available to distract the munchkin when things need to get done around the house.

last time i was gone for a week and a half. i think over the weekend, he really started to notice that something was up.

i think the fact that he's in day care during the week helped a lot, but i could be wrong.

i'm also wary of june. mrs.mm will be taking her first work travel, and it promises to be a doozy. she'll be gone for a full month, and while she's hoping to come home on the weekends, she might not be able. he may not miss me much when i'm gone, but i'm pretty sure he'll miss her!

Yeah, I've been in that scenario too. You're pretty fucked.

Re: Politics of 2011

Yipe. Might daily Skype-ing or something like that soften the blow?

Failing that, would quickly commissioning/knitting a mrs. mm puppet be a possibility?

Skyping is a good option. My friend who is deployed in the Mideast spends a lot of time Skyping with her daughter.

Re: Politics of 2011

certainly possible, but since i travel with my work laptop, its locked down so tight that i can't add software, and often hardware. i'm not sure i could even add on a webcam. dunno if mrs.mm will be traveling with her work laptop or home. prolly the former. so she'd have the same limitation.

tommy skypes with mrs.mm's parents occasionally, so its definitely an option. the only issue is whether it would actually be possible given our laptops.

Re: Politics of 2011

Have had the same issue when traveling with work laptops.

My fix? Carrying apps/other personal stuff on a big lil' flash drive.

Seriously, how do you accomplish anything on the computer? Holy moley.

Re: Skyping to Junior

integrated data environments, shared network drives, and email for sharing files, generally. occasionally a CD gets burned if somebody cannot get access to the network but has a genuine need to get specific data.

thumbdrives are major no-no's. not only are they big security risks, so the man says, in that they are readily loseable and generally unsecure, but the way they operate could allow malware to slip onto your computer before your antivirus software has a chance to snag them.

the computers are so locked down that i'm always very pleasantly surprised to find that i can still install the newest firefoxes.

i cannot, however, install google earth. boo. and therefore probably not skype. i might be theoretically able to run it off a SD card, i think...
