The earliest start of a new Jets thread in the history of Crane Pool Forum.

So SanHo wants the biggest contract available.....shocking.

Give him the $$$ and lets move on.

Players cut:
Kris Jenkins
Jason Taylor
Damien Woody
Vernon Gholston

Sorry to see Woody go, but the Jets successfully transitioned away from Mawae, McKenzie, and Faneca...if they believe they'll be ok without him (or that he won't recover fully medically) I believe them.

Taylor gave us a good enough year for a veteran on a one year deal, and they may yet re-sign him even cheaper, but he's no huge loss.

Jenkins couldn't stay healthy and its probably time to move on. If Taylor can be had at #30 in the draft the Jets will be fortunate.

Good Riddance to Gholston, the biggest draft bust in Jets history.

Kyle Brady was drafted 9th overall, he had 10 TDs in 4 seasons and a decent Yards per Reception number. Certainly he was a huge bust, but nothing like the "pass rusher" who was taken 6th overall, didn't manage a sack, and started only 5 games.

Lam Jones has a better case I think, having gone 2nd overall (and oh yeah, Art Monk was the next WR taken in that draft), but he still caught a few TD passes. The same can be said for Blair Thomas, who also went 2nd overall and only mostly sucked.

Haight went 22nd overall, so i have a hard time even considering him in the same category as the 4 much higher pick busts above.

I think Gholston "wins" for being the most completely useless player ever taken that high by the Jets.

Actually I'm inclined to go with Thomas who got picked ahead Emmitt Smith.

There was another guy.... Dewayne something who also attracted lots of vitriol.

Re: JAY-E-TEE-ES... JETS!!! JETS!!! JETS!!! in 11/12

The Jets also passed on DT Sedrick Ellis, LB Jerod Mayo, DBs Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and and kickass OT Ryan Clady in the early first to take Gholston
(not to mention passing on offensive players like Rashard Mendenhall, Joe Flacco, Chris Johnson, Felix Jones, Ray Rice, DeSean Jackson).

And that Dewayne is Dewayne Robertson. Not a great pick, but he wasn't a terrible player... mostly, since he was a little undersized for a tackle and nowhere near quick enough for end, he was a pretty bad fit for a 3-4, basically. Also... a really WIDE dude (sub-6 foot, 300-320 lbs.).

In my mind, it's a real horse race between Gholston, Thomas and Jones... but yeah, the guy with no sacks probably takes it.

Re: JAY-E-TEE-ES... JETS!!! JETS!!! JETS!!! in 11/12

here's a top 10 of all time jets busts from "John B", a blogger i like at GANG GREEN NATION:

First, here are his criteria:

Only players who were rookies for the Jets count: That means no picks traded for veteran players or coaches (Bill Belichick). So you are saved, Justin McCareins. In case it comes up, I will allow for guys technically selected by other teams but traded to the Jets on Draft day.

Position matters: Busting at some positions hurt worse than others. A bust at quarterback hurts more than a bust in other spots.

Players passed over matter to a degree: If the team took a guy who busted, and the next five picks went on to have Pro Bowl careers, that makes that bust hurt a little worse. We need to stay within reason, though. The Jets took Chad Pennington over Tom Brady in the 2000 Draft, but nobody had Brady as a better prospect or with a first round grade. You cannot hold that against the Jets.

Spot in the Draft matters: Busting on a player early in the first round hurts more than busting on a guy in the third round.

Other factors matter: If a guy's poor performance is aided by perhaps injuries, poor coaching, or not fitting a scheme, he gets more of a pass than a guy who just flat out stinks.

One thing that annoys me about sports punditry is the tendency a lot of people have to label the most recent thing as the best or worst. Kobe Bryant is not better than Michael Jordan was. Barry Bonds was not better than Babe Ruth. Largely because they were more recent, though, a lot of people argue they are. Sometimes, however, the most recent thing deserves that kind of superlative. That is the case with the top guy on our list, Vernon Gholston...
Gholston is not just the biggest bust in Jets history. He is one of the biggest busts in NFL Draft history. He might top this list another fifty years from now.

I was going to say pretty much the same thing. When you make drastic changes to your schemes in the NFL some players go from decent to bad by no fault of their own.

Jets-Giants on Saturday December 24th

Well then at least all the players can get home for Christmas.

One change that I noticed (OK, it was pointed out to me) was that the NFL has, in past years, gone towards cold weather sites for their late season prime-time games based on the theory that snow games make for the best TV. Suxx for the paying customers of course but it's been decades since the league cared for them over the TV audience and network wants.

But this year's sked (assuming this year ever comes off) seems to steer more of the late-season prime-time gigs towards domes and/or warm weather sites perhaps as a result of getting burned by the game in Philly that needed to be canceled on account of an impending blizzard and the Minnesota dome situation. The league can always "flex" out of those games in favor of a cold-weather site if they choose but at least it's better than knowing in advance that one of the tickets you're coughing up huge bucks for (and maybe a PSL) is going to be in Wisconsin or New England in late December or early January for a game that doesn't even start until five hours after the sun goes down.

They make more money off their fat TV contract than they do off ticket sales, I'd imagine.

Here's the schedule, assuming the babies all figure out how to share by then.

Obviously the network could still move the times on some of these, Jets-Eagles and Jet-Dolphins at the end of the year both look like potential Sunday Night games. I assume they won't move the Christmas Eve game to that night as there won't be any ggame that night, right?

Well sure, but that hardly endorses the extent to which the NFL has seemingly gone out of their way to shit on the paying customers in recent years.
Mid-season off-weeks (they aren't "Bye" weeks btw no matter what the league calls them), delaying the start of the season to avoid the lightly watched Labor Day weekend but push the reg season into January, and the constant knowledge that if your team has a good season the "reward" for the following year is to find a sked full of both prime-time slots and late-afternoon games (which during Nov or Dec in the north-east or upper-midwest are essentially night games) all are league ordered contrivances which make it tough on ticket holders.

I admit that these things are a collective negative for the ticket holders, but they are a positive for the fans who watch at home... at least in my mind.

Agree on both counts. Will any team have a tougher two-game road stretch than at Ravens and at Pats? And I can't believe that the jets aren't raising a stink about playing a Sunday night game then a Thursday night game on the road.

Robertson was a bust before Mangini ever got here, though. It wasn't just injuries, he was undersized and just not all that good. And they traded a shitload of picks to move up to get him. They expected better.

Re: JAY-E-TEE-ES... JETS!!! JETS!!! JETS!!! in 11/12

Manish Mehta paints a picture of the Jet "war room." (Great stuff.)

Tannenbaum asks every prospect he meets the same question: Tell me something good you've done for someone else in the last seven days.

He asks his draft team that question too at random moments. He swears it came in handy two years ago when he landed his franchise quarterback.

The night before the 2009 draft, Tannenbaum had the framework in place for a trade with the Browns that would move the Jets up to the No. 5 pick to get Sanchez. After the Chiefs selected defensive end Tyson Jackson with the No. 3 pick, only the Seahawks stood in the way.

"I was scared to death that Seattle was going to take Sanchez," Tannenbaum says.

So, the superstitious man in charge issued a directive to his inner circle: "Wherever you were standing when Kansas City made the pick, stand in that exact same spot!" Tannenbaum told everyone in the war room that day. "And think of something good you've done for someone else."

Clinkscales, Bradway, Cohen, Wooden and Davis froze for 10 minutes. When the Seahawks chose linebacker Aaron Curry, they exhaled and executed the blockbuster deal.

Strange 1st round tonight. The Patriots, a potential competitor for the edge-rusgers the Jets covet, just traded their pick to the Saints...if they take Ingram as expected that leaves only the Bears between the Jets and Wilkerson or even BOWERS if their doctors trust his knee... Bowers had top 5 potential before the injury.

UCLA's edge rusher Ayers could be an interesting choice, too.

(Confidentially, the Lions D-line should be very, very good next year... and the Giants appeared to get great value.)

And old helmet-hair said it may have been the best pick of the firstround.
I'm glad. I didn't want that OLB. The game has changed, with more teams going to a quick three-step drop. Outside pass rushers don't get to the quarterback in time. The only way to stop it is to disrupt the timing by getting into the quarterback's face as quickly as possible. And the inside rush is the way to do that.

They need help up and down the line, frankly. Thankfully, it's the deepest area of a deep draft.

At 6'4"/315 and an explosive burst, Wilkerson's a potential floater between DT or DE (like the Liuget kid from Illinois). There were whispers about work ethic and blahblahblah, but I'll trust the on-field numbers a bit more (61 tackles as a soph and 70 tackles as a junior, for a DT, in a system that's not necessarily tailored to funnel him tackles... that's a pretty solid sign of a grinder).

Still, that talents like Bowers and Ayers are still out there is tantalizing.

Third round pick (the didn't have a second round pick) K. Ellis, DT - Hampton, 6' 5"+ , 345+ pounds.
The #1 pick really wasn't built for NT, although he has played it.
I wanted this guy so bad I was willing to move up to get him.
The perfect guy to get in the faces of QBs taking those short 3 step drops.

I just thought of someone who will hate this pick - Nick Mangold, who will have to go against him every day in practice.
But then, Mangold is so good, maybe those battles will accelerate the kid's development.

He's also got three-foot-long arms, and is facing felony charges for assault after breaking a guy's jaw/nose in an on-campus incident while at Hampton.

So... He's got a roughly equal chance of either being a dark horse for Defensive RoTY or never playing professional football.

From possible first-round prospect to undrafted following a heroic recovery?

PSST! TANNENBAUM! UNDRAFTED SIGNEE RIGHT HERE!

BC coach Frank Spaziani said that Herzlich’s return last season was “miraculous’’ and that he regarded a Herzlich move to the NFL in the same category.

“You have to understand that when the diagnosis with Mark [occurred], all the doctors were talking about was about just surviving,’’ said Spaziani. “Playing football wasn’t an issue. The doctors were trying to find ways of saving his life. Mark was the one who kept on pushing football. For him to be still playing is miraculous. And in the NFL? That’s off the charts.’’

While Herzlich was watching spring football, the NFL worked its way through the final four rounds of the draft.

“I guess people are saying I can’t play football anymore,’’ said Herzlich, already preparing himself for his next battle. “Well I have heard that before and look what happened.’’’

Klecko, of course. Gastineau was a preening punk and a 1-dimensional player. Klecko was an all-star at 3 positions on the DL, and was an all-pro blue collar guy.

I own a Klecko, which I purchased after a lengthy online search for the right size/a decent price.

I've walked past Gastineaus in the store many, many times.
