Game Of Thrones

So, since a few of us had mentioned we were planning to watch it, what did you think?

I liked it. Not in love with it...yet. I was a big fan of 'Rome' so I was hoping for something like that.

What I think I'm getting is sort of a cross between Russel Crowe's 'Gladiator' (big fan) and the 'Lord Of The Rings' movies (not such a big fan).

It definitely has potential and once I commit to a series I'm usually all-in no matter what. The propensity of naked women and sex though, does have a certain allure.

No, probably not, but I'm one of those idiot parents who thinks letting them see graphic violence is better then letting them see sex and nudity.

The sex on GoT was not graphic - more just nude bodies mushing together, but there is incest and several scenes with naked ladies and what they call 'sexual situations'.

Re: Game Of Thrones

The first three books in this series were really good, if you like the fantasy sort of thing, and the first episode was pretty faithful to the books, including the really creepy parts so far.

I can see this topic being split off, but I'm guessing 99% of the 15 year-olds that don't live in Utah have seen much more graphic sex online or at a buddy's house or on their middle school bus. I'm a non-parent so I fully understand that I don't appreciate shielding your kids from stuff, but once you were at that high school age weren't you already starting to do stuff yourself?

I haven't liked much of anything lately of the cable channel series. The Borgias is boring, I can't get involved in The Killing, hated Spartacus, watched the first ten minutes of Game of Thrones and not pulled into it yet, though I'll go back and watch the rest. Thank goodness Treme is coming back, even without John Goodman.

So, I started watching this last night, but fell asleep about 15 minutes in (it was late, I didn't doze off due to boredom).

Can I ask those in the know: Without giving too much away, is this series going to be a fantasy thing (i.e., the inclusion of non-human/supernatural beings working magic and fairydom ala Lord of the Rings) or a "non-history based but could have happened back in the middle ages day" thing.

During the opening sequence, I couldn't tell if I was watching a stylized interpretation of humans killing humans or something entirely unbelivable.

I don't dig on fantasy, so the answer to this question will determine whether I give this show another shot.

Edited for multiple spelling errors.

I don't either, really. I think I read that there are dragons, don't know if there are wizards too. (I find dragons a lot more tolerable than wizards.)

That's kind of why I was asking if it was suitable for a 15-year-old; I think my son would probably enjoy this more than I would. (He's seen R-rated stuff before. I've let him watch Inglorious Basterds, Kill Bill, Watchmen, and Rosemary's Baby.)

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that if he's seen Christophe Waltz strangle a woman to death and Eli Roth slaughter a theater full of Nazi sympathizers, he'll be okay with suggested incest and swordplay.

Vic Sage

Re: Game Of Thrones

caught up with the episode last night.
the incest isn't "suggested"... its graphically depicted, in the doggie position.
If your cool with your kid watching simulated sex scenes, then this is fine, i guess. Although, with regard to a 15-year old, i don't know how much control you really have over images he is exposed to, should he disagree with your assessment.

I liked the episode, by the way. Its a polyglot world of medieval, middle-earthian, narnian societies, in political turmoil... sort of ROME meets LOTR. There will definitely be fantasy elements for those in doubt, based on the George RR Martin book series its based on.

I don't get the faint-heartedness about "fantasy", by the way. Fantasy, like any other genre, can be done well or done poorly. If the fact a story might have dragons or unicorns keeps you from enjoying it, i'd suggest that has more to do with you than the story. I like to try and keep my mind open to all kinds of stories, all kinds of music, all kinds of paintings, all kinds of expression, without creating arbitrary barriers based on bad prior experiences. Do i have "preferences"? Sure, everybody has preferences, based on their past responses. And, presumably, everybody has limited time to consume new experiences so a process or filter for selection is generally needed. But selectivity based on "genre" rather than likelihood of quality seems like a pretty poor filter to me.

I completely agree. But it keeps me from enjoying it none-the-less. Fantasy bores the shit out of me. I've never made it through a Harry Potter or LOTR movie without falling asleep or wanting to do something (anything) else. And it's not for lack of trying. It's mostly because I have such a hard time believing in the plausability of Hollywood concoctions that don't envolve fantasy elements, that when elves or talking trees are added I just roll my eyes.

I'll be the first to admit that it has to do with me, but it doesn't turn me off any less. I have an open mind to expression as well, but it's a matter of personal taste. Watching this type of stuff doesn't trip my trigger no matter how "well" it's created.

...and the fantasy aspect is starting to kick in a little bit now - zombies, witches, etc.

I like this show and wish it were 2 hours every week. How many books are in this series and how many seasons can they get out of it? I think 'True Blood' was loosely based on the Sookie Stackhouse books and then HBO just took it and ran in a whole other direction. Perhaps they could do that with this if it proves popular enough.

The fifth book just came out, and it was a long wait for the fifth. Be very careful if you get started on the books. The first three are great, but it's been five and a half years since the fourth came out. Since the HBO series is so popular, George RR Martin will probably finish what is supposedly a seven-novel series. At the very least I now have hope that [u:gbhpmsu6]someone[/u:gbhpmsu6] will finish it.

So far, the series has been 100% faithful to the first book. It's fucking cool to see what people are saying as the TV series plays out. I'm almost jealous of anyone who is seeing it for the first time.

You know the same thing happens in 'Pillars Of The Earth'. Main character who the reader has a lot invested in is killed about halfway through the book. I had the same shocked feeling watching GoT episode 9 as I did when I was reading Pillars.

And since I brought up 'Pillars Of The Earth' I'd just like to say that I loved that book and was so looking forward to that mini-series on Showtime. It was so bad that I didn't even watch it all the way through. Seeing what they've done with 'Game of Thrones' now - Pillars was even worse than I first thought.

It annoys me because I feel like each time he decides he's gonna kill off a 'main' character, (It seems the point is there is no main character, except the realm itself?) it kills off an interesting storyline that I was looking forward to.

I'm now into the fourth book myself. I'm not into this one as much. I'm just not as invested in the storyline for these other families now. Arienna? eh.

I finally watched the series. My wife almost didn't make it past episode two (Kingsroad, the result of the Arya/Joffrey encounter), but she perservered. I was entertained, but the whole thing is a very depressing story for the most part.

I saw a sound bite of Martin answering a question at San Diego ComicCon from a fan.

The question was 'Why do you continue to kill off everybody's favorite characters one after the other?'

His answer was that he wants the reader to be fully invested in the story and to be afraid to turn the page for fear of what's going to happen next.

As I've noted in the 'what are you reading' thread. I've now finished Book 3 and am starting Book 4 - 'A Feast For Crows'. So far I have not been disappointed in any of the first three books.

of course he's cruel. writers are supposed to be. and it doesn't go "to no end." It goes to the end of evoking an emotional response, which is all the end any of it is for. And yes, its about the realm. People die. Only the land continues. And the god of this realm is as cruel as the god of yours.

sorry, it goes 'to no end' as far as the story goes, not my response to said story. I'm not sure writers are supposed to be anything specific. But I started reading a story that seemed to be focusing around Ned Stark, and now in the same story that entire thread is basically an after thought.

Additionally, just when I get a little gleeful about some characters getting what's coming to them, he switches gears and humanizes them.

I had been confused by the accusations against this series that it continually killed off leading and sympathetic characters, but it really had not been so, at least since the 1st chapter's execution of Lord Eddard Stark, as seen in the tv series. Re: Game Of Thrones

i'm well into Book V. I couldn't wait for it to come out in paperback so i bought it on my kindle.

As Martin has stated, Books IV and V are really a single work split in half, as the action is simultaneous, but some folks probably prefer Book V because it deals with more of the major characters. I also liked Book IV, however, specifically because it dealt with the minor houses and their roles in the game of thrones. It makes this world even more complete, which is the point of epic fantasy... the delineation of a world, in all its complexity.

I am going to be so depressed when i'm done, because it'll be years before we get the final 2 books. There is something about the total immersion I experience when reading epic fantasy that is unlike anything else i know, and a gap of years, i fear, will break the spell. I still remember reading the LOTR trilogy, LeGuin's Earthsea trilogy, the Dune books, PJFarmer's riverworld series, Cherryh's Faded Sun... so many worlds, all still so vivid in my memory, all devoured in single gulps that lasted consecutive days, weeks, months. But never were they broken up by a period of years. This was a situation i wanted to avoid by avoiding this series in the first place. But alas, i was weak. And now i soon arrive at the precipice... or rather, the Wall. And as the wall weeps, so will i... metaphorically speaking.

They described him as stabbed quite a few times, so it seems unlikely..however, talking it over with a coworker he brought up the theory about Mellisandra (that's the witches name right?) resurrecting him. Which I guess would also get him out of his oath and allow him to take up the 'throne' in the north?

yeah, there have been a lot of folks who survived serious injury in this series, and unless i see the Lord Commander's head rolling down the steps like his dad, poor Eddard, i don't assume he's dead. Especially in a universe with magic. I just think he's too key to the architecture of the overall story for Martin to give him up 2 books before the end.
