159 days early, but I couldn't wait
|

I remember the first game this year when I started the IGT about 5 hours early and was worried that that was too soon.

Where's Durham? Surely Dickshot will have convinced Omar to trade for him by then.
|
Yancy Street Gang Oct 27 2005 09:14 AM |
I expect, at a minimum, we'll see a different catcher and second baseman in the starting lineup when April rolls around. And maybe a different first baseman and at least one different corner outfielder.
|
Elster88 Oct 27 2005 09:15 AM |
That's post 6666 for Yancy. Interesting number. I'm a little scared.

Yeah, there may be a few late scratches. We'll see.
|

I think we can expect some changes in the coaching ranks, Manuel to the bench and Alomar to 1st.
|
Johnny Dickshot Oct 27 2005 09:55 AM |
It's too bad Glavine has to start this one with Pedro blowing out his elbow, shoulder and big toe during that memorable 17-inning performance in the finals of the World Baseball Classic. It's also too bad he hung that slider to Jason Bay, giving Canada the upset win.
|
Edgy DC Oct 27 2005 09:57 AM |
Backman will figure out a way to win it for us. Just you wait.

We have a few changes to the lineup. Cameron moves to San Diego, and Jacobs is out, replaced by Carlos Delgado.
|
Johnny Dickshot Nov 23 2005 11:16 AM |
That lineup is pure fantasy. WWSB would never bat 2 lefthanders back-to-back.
|
sharpie Nov 23 2005 11:17 AM |
Also, Nady will prolly start ahead of Diaz.

Preston Wilson's a free agent, one to whom the Nats declined to offer arbitration yesterday.

The Nats still appear to have Christian Guzman penciled in at short. I'd be very surprised to see him open the season there.

Uh, Soriano leading off in LF? Not if he has anything to say about that! Of course Frank would have something to say, or do, if Sucki (new nickname for Sori) actually pulls something like that
|
Rockin' Doc Dec 24 2005 07:20 AM |
I agree with Elster that Wright should hit in the 3 hole and Delgado should hit clean up. However, I do understand Edgy's reasoning for ordering the line up as he did. Willie may have an aversion to putting left heanded bats consecutively in the order. Willie needs to get over that, because there is a huge difference between Floyd/Mientkiewicz and Delgado/Floyd. It's all about the quality of the hitters involved.
|
Edgy DC Dec 24 2005 09:30 AM |
I disagree I think it's eaiser to stagger the lineup with a lot of good batters laying around, not harder.
|
Rockin' Doc Dec 24 2005 03:06 PM |
It is certainly easier to adjust a line up full of good hitters rather than to adjust one with offensively challenged hitters. My point was that if the two players in question (Delgado and Floyd) are good hitters, then it's fine to bat them consecutively in the order. I still believe Wright is best suited for the third slot in the order and Delgado is a more traditional clean up hitter. To flip them in the order simply so two left handed hitters are not back to back would be counter productive in my opinion.

The Nats just signed Royce Clayton. He doesn't have so much left, I guess, and it was a minor league deal. but I've got to think he passed Christian Guzman on the depth chart before the ink was dry on his contract. I imagine Guzman and three quarters of his salary will be going to Texas or somewhere for a non-prospect shortly before camp begins.

Projecting Nady over Diaz these days? Not that I'm arguing against it, I just don't remember how that came about.
|
Edgy DC Feb 02 2006 11:58 PM |
Only that Diaz played 89 games last year while Nady played 124. Obviously it could go either way, but I think Nady is being brought in to fill that role.
|
duan Feb 03 2006 09:37 AM |
I'm REALLY not convinced that they'll have the cojones to bat Beltran in the two hole. I think they're going to have LoDuca in there even though it'd be a recipe for having a .310 obp out of the 1-2 slots.

I've got that rumbling feeling in the pit of my stomach. March Madness starting next week followed immediately by Opening Day. Best time of the year to watch sports. I am ridiculously excited. 32 days, baby.

||||
Expected changes from last go-around are in bold. I also bumped up LoDuca based on the broad speculation, though that could change.now that the top Mets are back in camp. Other Nat news: Alfonso Soriano is due in camp today or tomorrow. He claims to be excited to report but still hasn't indicated whether he's ready to report to left field. He had a crap WBC on offense and defense and Manny Acta ended up replacing him with Placido Polanco (who is a career .300 hitter, by the way). Reliever Luis Ayala is George Steinbrenner's worst nightmare. He played in the World Baseball Classic for Mexico despite the Nationals asking him not to, as he was recovering from surgery to remove a bone spur. He came in, walked Alex Rodriguez, and now he's going to spend the season vacationing with Tommy John. Christian Guzman has a SLAP tear in his shoulder. He and the team are weighing surgery, but considering the way his career is going, either way is going to be real tough for him. (In related news, I have no idea what a SLAP tear is.) Frank Robinson is one unhappy guy: VERO BEACH, Fla. -- Manager Frank Robinson is planning to hold another team meeting on Monday before his team takes on the Dodgers at Space Coast Stadium. It will be Robinson's third meeting this spring, and it's pretty much being held for the same reason -- the Nationals are just not playing fundamentally sound baseball.

|
Edgy DC Mar 20 2006 10:58 PM |
I suspect (pure speculation) that he made his position known, Bowden and Robinson made theirs known, and Robby called his bluff, perhaps fully knowing that he was going to go through with it, but put him in the position of pulling it off in order to force him to make himself look bad.

A mini-rally (two walks) by Washington ends with Paul LoDuca showing more range behind the dish than I've seen from a Met since maybe John Stearns --- running about 45 feet up the first-base line to field a dribbler by Brian Schneider. He was close enough to underhand the ball to first, anyhow.

smiggy gets the drop on me.

Delgado hits an even weaker popout than Beltran, and a big opportunity is wasted. Sigh.

Five Ks for Glavine. Three in a row.

Okay, Reyes. Time for one of those trademark triples of yours.

Edgy DC Apr 03 2006 03:17 PM |
Let's let Chad Bradford go after these punks.

Strikeout ends the inning!
|
Edgy DC Apr 03 2006 03:47 PM |
Yeah, looks that way, but I'm not sure it's conclusive either. The ball isn't in the pocket of his glove, but that doesn't mean he doesn't have control.

So now we all know that we def got the benefit from the call at home ... but y'know what, it was LoDuca's slight-of-hand that sold it. He dropped and then picked up and showed the ball so quickly that not only did the ump not see it (he was on the wrong side) but even Royce Clayton, who was on the correct side instructing Soriano to slide, didn't see it either. Nifty bit of handiwork by the newbie. I bet he could be a good juggler.

I was dumbfounded to turn on WFAN yesterday and hear that Wagner's song and the traffic getting into Shea were the hot button issues.

Thank you Yogi Berra (sort of). Later

The traffic apparently affected THEM yesterday, ergo it's a big issue and someone should be held responsible.

Jesse taking Keith's advice on Just for Men? You think?
|
metirish Apr 04 2006 11:16 AM |
Yeah I think he is Edgy, when Jesse visted the booth they talked again about Keith telling Jesse to throw your fukcing slider, a story I have heard Gary Carter say is BS.......any chance of getting the clock updated here?

I cannot believe these morons are STILL talking about this song 'controversy'.

Edgy DC Apr 04 2006 01:48 PM |
It's frequently offputting to see old-timers return wearing gear that's so different from that which they wore in their day.
|
Bret Sabermetric Apr 04 2006 01:48 PM |
if I were Wagner, around this point I'd ask if I could wear Mariano's number, start affecting a Panamanian accent, and commence electrocuting a few relatives in my swimming pool, too.
|
Willets Point Apr 04 2006 01:49 PM |
I'm glad that Orosco and Carter never wore khakis on the field back in the day, that would have been an embarrasing uniform.
|
soupcan Apr 04 2006 01:50 PM |

The accent and dead relatives maybe not - but it would be a great tweak if he started wearing 42.

He should wear the Mets pinstripe uniform (sans "Wagner," of course) all the time, too, regardless of what the rest of the Mets wear. And limit his repitoire to one pitch, which he would learn to throw right-handed.

Massive Mike (Francessa) came on the Joe Beningo show on WFAN today, and Mike was literally screaming about how this is a personal affront to both Rivera and Yankee "tradition".
|
Elster88 Apr 04 2006 01:57 PM |
I doubt Rivera even knows the lyrics. I think the only ones who care are Yankee fans.

I think that's a great idea.

I hear the Yankees are in uproar that Bonds allegedly used steroids.
|
sharpie Apr 04 2006 02:03 PM |
I think that Trevor Hoffman started the whole "Enter Sandman" thing. Wagner and Rivera both became closers in '97, no idea who had it first between those two.
|
Willets Point Apr 04 2006 02:06 PM |
I thought Hoffman's song was "Hells Bells"?

I think in "Some Kind of Monster" it's mentioned that Rivera had no idea who Metallica was or what the song was about when he picked it. So really, Rivera picking that song--and the Yankees letting him--was an affront to Metallica. At least Wagner's a REAL fan.

Huh?
Huh-diddly-huh?
I'll choose (d). It's not his song, he didn't pick it in the first place, he has no horse in this pissing match (piss in this pissing match), and, to the extent that he has given this a thought, realizes that the same songs are pretty much played in every ballpark, major and minor league. That's the type of person he is? Sure. That's the type of person most of us are. It's a freaking song about a scared child.

Two plays I missed: a supposedly good one by Anderson Hernandez in the first, and a supposedly bad judgment one by that same Anderson Hernandez about the seventh, that got him a talking-to from Sandy Alomar and/or Julio Franco. What were these plays? What did they say?

1st inning was a Derek Jeter type play. Hernadez going to his left picks up the grounder and as his momentum takes him into leftfield he jumps, spins and throws to first whilst in mid-air to get Nick Johnson at first. Nice looking play. The crowd appreciated it. He flashed a smile and got kudos from Reyes right afterwards. The other play - I don't remember the inning - man on first maybe one out. Ground ball to second, instead of throwing to short to start the dp, he kind of sort of stared the runner back and threw to first. After he threw, the runner continued toward second and was safe. I think Hernandez was thinking 4-3-6 instead of 4-6-3. Didn't work. In his defense he executed that exact same play and it worked in one of the last spring training games.

You got that right!
|
rpackrat Apr 05 2006 02:21 PM |

The difference being that Jeter doesn't get within 3 feet of fielding that ball.
|
Rotblatt Apr 05 2006 02:28 PM |
I shocked the airwaves aren't aflame with Yankee fans claiming that Hernandez is stealing Jeter's pattented "Jump and throw while in the air" move.
|
metirish Apr 05 2006 02:29 PM |
Guys does anyone have that pic of Jeter making above said play where he is wearing a ballet skirt?
