Here we go...

I Think It's Don Grant Now
Subject: Cleon Jones
Tune: I Think We're Alone Now (Tommy James and the Shondells)

Cleon behave,
That's what the Chairman would be saying
And watch who you lay
He won't understand
And so we're

Holed up in the back of a van
Hidin' from the gaze of Donald Grant
Doesn't want me with a woman who's white
But then she puts her arms around me
And we tumble into bed
And then we say

I think we're alone now,
There doesn't seem to be any -- hey what's that sound?
I think it's Don Grant now,
He steps into the van -- oh no we've been found!

What have you done?
The Chairman wags his finger.
You'll pay for your fun
Now we know that you're a sinner

I'm standin' with my wife and Donald Grant
Apologizin' any way I can
Tryin' to make amends
Put all this right
But Grant puts his arm around me
And we go into his office
And then he says

I think you're all done now,
We no longer want to keep you around
So pack up your things now
Your glory days are past so get out of town.

I think it's Don Grant now
Chairman of the Board doesn't want me around.
I think it's Don Grant now
Puritan exec kicking me when I'm down

[INSTRUMENTAL BREAK]

Doin' it in the back of a van
Hidin' from the gaze of Donald Grant
Gettin' it on with a woman who's white
And then Grant sets his sight upon me
And he calls a press conference
And then I'm through

I think it's a shame now
Back in '69 I was toast of the town
But thanks to Don Grant now
I have a scarlet letter that ends my renown.

I think it's Don Grant now
Chairman of the Board doesn't want me around.
I think it's Don Grant now
Would this have happened if my skin wasn't brown?

I think it's Don Grant now (Don Grant now)
Chairman of the Board doesn't want me around.
I think it's Don Grant now (Don Grant now)
Would this have happened if my skin wasn't brown?

I think it's Don Grant now (Don Grant now)
Chairman of the Board doesn't want me around.
I think it's Don Grant now (Don Grant now)
Would this have happened if my skin wasn't brown?

I think it's Don Grant now (Don Grant now)...

Scenes from Todd Hundley’s Career
(to the tune of Billy Joel's Scenes from an Italian Restaurant)

Hit from the right, Hit from the left
I bat behind the Gilk, in front of Jeff
We trail Atlanta once again
In our old familiar place
Trying to stay...in the race...

(ooh ooh ooh)

Hit from the left, Hit from the right
It all depends who’s on the mound tonight
Cuz I can hit the ball real hard
Yes, I’m your home-grown superstar

(musical interlude)

Things are okay with me these days
Got a new star, got a new catcher
I got a good staff, got some new kids
And the team’s doing fine

We lost touch long ago
You rehabbed...I did not know
You’d be back so soon after missing so much time.

Do you remember that day when we said we wouldn’t trade for Mike?
Said we got a catcher on the roster we all like
But then the Fish called and asked for Preston, Yarnall and Goetz
Shake hands, done deal, now Mike Piazza’s on the Mets

(Whoa, Whoa, Whoa-oh oh oh oh)

Hot Rod Hundley knew how to have fun and he
lived as the toast of the town
Hitting homeruns there wasn’t a soul that could keep Hundley down
Nobody hit the ball harder
He was the best since Gary Carter
He was the guy that would reward all the fans for their tears
Surely Todd Hundley would be a big star here for years

Hot Rod Hundley reached the end of his run when he
chose to go under the knife
But he didn’t know then how much that move would change his whole life
The Mets told him there was no hurry
“We don’t want Mike so don’t you worry”
But we all know that the Mets do nothing but lie
Oh, it wouldn’t be long before Hundley was waving goodbye.

Well they traded for Mike and Todd didn’t like it
but he said he would move to leftfield
The Mets understood that the move was for good
but Todd said “That wasn’t part of the deal.”
They started to fight when he couldn’t throw right
and move had lost its appeal

(Whoa, Whoa, Whoa-oh oh oh oh)

Well it worked for a while in a very nice style
But it’s always the same in the end
Carrying two backstops is over the top
even though they may claim to be friends.
At the end of the day, he was traded away
and he was never Amazin’ again.

(Whoa, whoa, whoa)

Hot Rod Hundley knew his days in the sun
would soon be a thing of the past
By 2003 he decided to hang up the mask
In the outfield he’d looked like a joker
Was traded away for a no-good choker
We never thought that’s how Hundley would end his career
We always thought that he’d be a big star here for years....

(musical interlude)

Hit from the left, hit from the right
I caught your highlights on TV last night
Now I watch you from afar
I was your home-grown superstar.

Armando bashing. Ten yards.

This is a Final Four caliber battle right here. I'm gonna have to think about my vote for a while.

MFS62
Nov 02 2005 12:02 PM

The worst news we other contestants could hear is that they're both holding back their "good" stuff for later rounds.
Those were great- final four quality.

Not to get ahead of myself, but what do we do in the case of a tie? Do we burn another guy writing a tie-breaker song? That would be kinda cool.

Then we'd be short-staffed going into the next round just like teams who burn their pen playing extra-innings in the playoffs.

Yancy Street Gang
Nov 02 2005 12:05 PM

Maybe for a tie-breaker the voting could first be extended another 12 (or whatever) hours before requiring a new sing-off.

Great Stuff

Holy tough first round match, Batman!

Kudos to both. Very nice musical choices, and terrific memories generated by the lyrics. Excellent.

I think a player not already on the board should be selected at random, and both people have to write a song about him.

Elster88
Nov 02 2005 12:14 PM

Every time I start thinking I'll enter next year, another two posters put out their lyrics and I immediately realize why I won't enter.

Nice job to both combatants.

Edgy DC
Nov 02 2005 12:30 PM

We had a lot of discussion about tie-breaking last year. I think we decided that a random subject would be simultaneously assigned to both of the contestants, and they'd have a write-off.

Shit! I can't choose between these two. Holy fucking amazing! I'm off to check the brackets to see if I'd meet either of these guys should I be fortunate enough to win the next round.

I'm not voting.

I'll wait for the tiebreaker, because I can't decide which one is better.
Nice work.

For the late voters like jb, what time does the poll close?

Yancy pulls into an 8-7 lead.

Centerfield
Nov 02 2005 02:48 PM

Not to be overlooked in the heat of battle is Yancy's "I'm not musically inclined" act he gave us during sign ups. Essentially, Yancy ran down to first, hobbled around, had the trainer come out to look at him, insisted he could stay in the game despite the concern of his manager, and now with these two parodies, has immediately swiped second and third.

Nov 02 2005 02:55 PM

Well, I'm pleased that I seem to be holding my own, but I do feel that I'm in over my head. My muses must be in a good mood this week,

ScarletKnight41
Nov 02 2005 02:56 PM

I was thinking about Yancy's trepidation about entering the contest. But I couldn't have phrased a post about it as well as CF just did.

This is like the guy you meet in the pool hall who claims he "isn't that good". And then he misses a few easy shots in a "for fun" game.
He isn't that good until you start playing for money, that is.
Yancy looks like a gamer to me.

Congrats Yancy. That was a hell of a buzzsaw I ran into in the first round.

Gonna have to gripe to the selection committee about that one. No way a #2 seed should have to face that kind of opponent.

How cool is it that I'm a #2 seed out in the first round? I feel like Syracuse.

Yancy Street Gang
Nov 03 2005 12:05 PM

Thanks, CF.

My entry was serendipity for me. If you'll remember, when I entered this contest I said something about the only song I know being "I Think We're Alone Now" which is a song about sneaking off to have sex. When I was dealt Cleon Jones it all fell into place, especially since the can/hand rhyme translates into van/Grant.

The fact that my absoultely best song was only able to win by only one vote speaks to the quality of my competition. I can only hope to be as lucky with my third (!) song.
