Last year I lost to the eventual champ in this round. We'll see whether I break the curse this year.

Ooooooooh, the quarter finals. Feel the pressure.

Come On Alois, Throw That Strike!

Player – Al Leiter
Song – Light My Fire by The Doors

You know that it would be untrue
You know that I would be a liar
If I were to say to you
Your pitch count couldn't get much higher

Come on Alois, throw that strike!
Come on Alois, throw that strike!
Try to get through more than five!

The time to hesitate is through
No time to nibble at the corners
Walk ‘em and we only lose
’Cause you can’t pick off the extra runners

Come on Alois, throw that strike!
Come on Alois, throw that strike!
Try to get through more than five!

The time to hesitate is through
No time to nibble at the corners
Walk ‘em and we only lose
’Cause you can’t pick off the extra runners

Come on Alois, throw that strike!
Come on Alois, throw that strike!
Try to get through more than five!

You know that it would be untrue
You know that I would be a liar
If I were to say to you
Your pitch count couldn't get much higher

Come on Alois, throw that strike!
Come on Alois, throw that strike!
Try to pitch the whole damn nine!
Try to pitch the whole damn nine!
Try to pitch the whole damn nine!
Try to pitch the whole damn nine!

Pedro is the Guy Dwarves Climb On
Player: Pedro Martinez
Song: Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds by the Beatles

Picture yourself in Manoguayabo
Beneath mango trees and Dominican skies.
Baseball scout calls you, you answer quite slowly,
A man with binocular eyes

Roofs of bright Kevlar and Monsters of Green
Stretching out over your head
Brought joy to fans who had Curse on their minds
Then you're gone

Pedro is the guy dwarves climb on
Pedro is the guy dwarves climb on
Pedro is the guy dwarves climb on, ah, ah

You'll clown around when the field is a fountain
While Mezzanine people eat hot dogs and fries.
Watch as you smile as men cover the scoreboard
A tarp so incredibly high

Omar Minaya appeared at your home
Planning to take you away
You signed a contract as the Mets made a splash
And you're here.

Pedro is the guy dwarves climb on
Pedro is the guy dwarves climb on
Pedro is the guy dwarves climb on, ah, ah

Picture yourself in a ballpark in Flushing
With home run red apples and airplane filled skies,
Your presence draws the great crowds to the turnstiles
The fans with the pennant race eyes

Pedro is the guy dwarves climb on
Pedro is the guy dwarves climb on
Pedro is the guy dwarves climb on, ah, ah

We really have some incredible talent on this board. Brilliant, both of you.

Both songs make me want to reach for my Grant Roberts Memorial Bong.

The early returns do not bode well for an eventual Scarlett Knight-Diamond Dad showdown in the semis. The guys in the front office are pulling for that matchup because of the storylines.

Great job by both of you. It's a good thing that ABG is going to shut me down 'cause I don't think I have the stuff to match up with quarter-finalists like you.

Nice pair!

I'd have liked one verse (probably the first) in the Pedro song to somehow acknowledge Nelson de la Rosa, but I love the creative way you reworrked the chorus.

That the obvious "fire/Leiter" rhyme was NOT used in the first piece is admirable, as the predictable way to have written that was prolly:

Come on throw a strike Al Lieter

Nice job both of you. Columnists have been relentless in questioning my decision to leave a rested Pedro in the pen during Round 1. I feel like Davey after allowing Howard Johnson to swing away in Game 6.

When this is all done, we'll have to have a "Behind the Music" thread where we talk about the choices we made and didn't make, the ideas we pondered and passed on, etc.

And a great job by Scarlett in this round! I have a nice lead at the moment, but I'm not counting any chickens.

Is Grover pestering you again?

Grover should stick to his day job.

Yancy as a #19 seed is making a 1999-Gonzaga type of run through this tournament, knocking off higher-seeded opponents along the way. Another win here and the whispers of a new 1985 Villanova or 1983 NC State will grow louder.

I like that idea.
A perfect post mortem thread for the Song forum when all this year's entries are retired there.

Hey, its getting lonely in the Losers' Lounge. We need some more food, but the beer's still cold. Just don't sit in my chair.

This thread had slipped to the second page.

35 minutes remain. My lead appears comfortable at 14-5.

Scarlett's song was very worthy. I would have expected the voting to be closer.

As 24 hours have passed, I concede this match to Yancy.

Great job Yancy!

Thank you!

When I reluctantly entered this contest, I never figured I'd have to come up with four songs. Hopefully my muses won't desert me.
