Hall of Fame Kwiz

Edgy DC

I started my ongoing project of tabulating which Mets are in which in smal-time Halls of Fame.

Piazza makes it six Mets are in the Italian-American Sports Hall of Fame. Name the other five.

Yogi Berra?
Joe Torre?
Lee Mazzilli?

Italian-American Hall of Fame?

Didn't know there was an Italian-American Hall of Fame. Where is it? Sounds like a nice Crane Pool group outing!

Lee Mazzilli
Is Bobby Valentine Italian?

That's a head-scratcher, all right.

Johnny Dickshot
Nov 03 2005 12:09 PM

Bobby Valentine
John Franco

Stop asking and start answering with confidence!

Yogi Berra is one. Joe Torre is two. Lee Mazzilli is not three.

="Diamond Dad"]Lee Mazzilli
Is Bobby Valentine Italian?

Answers. Not questions. Bobby Valentine isn't Italian. He's Italian-American. The way things are going, he'll soon be Italian-American-Japanese. Nonetheless he's right. But, you too, answer with confidence.

That's three.

="Johnny Dickshot"]Bobby Valentine
John Franco

Too late on the former. Wrong on the latter.

Cool that JD answered Johnny and Bobby while he's posting as Johnny Dickshot at the level of Bobby Valentine.

Jim Fregosi?

Benjamin Grimm
Nov 03 2005 12:24 PM

I know he's not a Met, but I'm wondering if Roy Campanella is in there. Or does his black mother keep him from being seen as Italian-American?

If he's not in there, he oughta be.

Yes. Jim Fregosi. One more.

Campy was inducted in 1990, three years before he died.

Benjamin Grimm

Frank Viola!

Edgy DC
Nov 03 2005 12:35 PM

That's the way to answer!

You are correct, sir!

Valadius
Nov 03 2005 12:35 PM

I was just gonna say that!

Edgy DC
Nov 03 2005 12:38 PM

So, of six Met Hall of Famers, three both played for and managed the team, one (Fregosi) interviewed and one made it far in interviewing to be manager.

The likely next to to be inducted --- Mazzilli and Franco, to judge by respondents' answers --- will also someday be managerial candidates for hte Mets.

I think Franco will be a Mets coach in a few years, in the system of course, maybe in Brooklyn to start and in perhaps five years he'll be coaching with the big club.

Paciorek, yes. Orsulak, no.

Tom Paciorek

Inducted June 11, 1992

One of four brothers to play professional baseball, Paciorek chalked up a .282 average in an 18-year career (1970-1987) with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Atlanta, Seattle, Chicago White Sox, New York Mets and Texas. His career-best year came in 1981 at Seattle when he batted .326, second-best in the American League, and played in the All-Star Game. Down the September stretch in 1983, he hit well over .400 to lead the White Sox to the American League West Division championship. He finished the year at .307 (his third straight year at .300 or better) and a team-leading .462 slugging average. An All-American in football and baseball at the University of Houston, Paciorek played shortstop on the Hamtramck (Mich.) 1961 Pony League world champions.

If we can use some of the weird ancestral associations some athletes use to get on Olympic teams, then Ron Swoboda might also be in the Chinese-American Baseball Hall Of Fame. I remember that his grandmother (when she was widowed) got a job in a Chinese Restaurant and later married the owner. So Ron had a Chinese grandfather.

Lloyd's Australian, Heredia's Latin, so they're out. Stanton's out because he was guessed. Guetterman, Anderson, Burke, Watson, and Weathers haven't really been around long enough to be in any kind of HoF, which leaves Tanana and Gibson. Frank Tanana

Inducted June 13, 1996

The California Angels' No. 1 pick in the 1971 baseball free agent draft out of Detroit Catholic Central High School, Tanana also had to decide from among more than 100 college basketball scholarships. He chose baseball, and the lefthander with a sizzling fastball hurled 21 years in the major leagues and finished with a 240-236 won-lost record and a 3.66 ERA. He notched 2,773 strikeouts to rank among the all-time leaders for left-handers. Tanana pitched for the Angels, Boston, Texas, Detroit, New York Mets and New York Yankees. In 1979, he fired a complete game 4-1 victory over Kansas City in the American League playoffs to give the Angels their first-ever post-season victory. Tanana pitched Detroit to a 1-0 win over Toronto on the last day of the 1987 season to clinch the AL East Division crown and complete an unbelievable seven-game year-end Tigers' sweep of the Blue Jays, each game decided by one run.

Congratulations on all you fans of the Slavs.

Now, we move on the the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame, which seems to include sporstmen and women who hailed from Missouri, as well as those who performed there.

Without peeking, please name the six enshrined Mets. (Hint: Only one of these six actually played for the team, while the others have been employed with the team otherwise.)

Benjamin Grimm

Edgy DC

Not exactly a solid entry in the Spelling Hall of Fame, however.

Johnny Dickshot
Nov 04 2005 03:02 PM

Was the other player Amos Otis?

Edgy DC

Valadius
Nov 04 2005 05:02 PM

Ken Boyer.

Edgy DC
