Bird Poop

How much do you fear a global avian flu pandemic?
Hellzapoppin, people. I have purchased a yurt in Utah to retreat to and am liquidating my assets. If you or anybody else try and shelter yourself with me and mine, I will shoot you. 1 votes
I am really scared. 0 votes
I think it could be bad. I know global authorities can offset this but I fear that they can't. 1 votes

I'm holding out for global fire and locusts before I fret too much over this.

It actually came up last week in a discussion I was having about what would
be our disaster recovery plan for our office if the town was quarantined and
we couldn't run the business?

Even in the worst case scenarios I've heard, about 1 out of 500 people worldwide would die of this. And that would be horrible, of course, but it wouldn't exactly end civilization.

I've read that past pandemics have killed 200,000 or so worldwide. Also, 36,000 die every year of influenza anyway.

It's something to be concerned about, and authorities are right to prepare, but there's no reason for us to be alarmed. I have twelve ducks living in my house, and I have no plans to get rid of them.

Why don't you write more about your ducks?

KC, that's the kind of solution stuff my company deals in. If you're interested in pursuing it, please PM me.

I have no fear really, infact I seem to have been eating more chicken the last month....plus I have full faith that our Goverment would be able to handle a major outbreak....

I'm sure Bush wouldn't put anybody in charge who wasn't completely qualified.

Yancy, do you believe in the tooth fairy? Just wondering.

I voted option four. I'm optimistic that something will be done, but not confident in that optimism. Extra concern for me is that little Seawolf18 is due in February, and I don't want any flu -- bird, monkey, or otherwise -- of any kind coming anywhere near me until roughly 2012.

I couldn't find the : "Your government is trying to keep you in a constant state of fear and divert your attention from other matters" button.

My colleague across the hall says every time there is a terror alert in any city that the government is trying to keep people diverted from the real danger of the bird flu.

Has avian flu even made the jump from birds to humans yet? I've not read anything about a human being with the disease.

I don't think so Willets but I bet pharmaceuticals stocks are up...

Last I read, 121 cases have been reported, with 62 deaths. In most cases, they were able to trace the transmission to human contact with

  1. bird poop,

  2. bird blood,
  3. or
  4. Yancy's ducks.

But only sexual contact, apparently.

I guess bird poop is not quite as lucky as has been in the past.

Whatever happened to SARS? Did bird poop kill that too?

50% is pretty scary number but as Edgy points out it's not been seen to transmit human to human so it's less of a threat than say the 1918 Influenza. Also, I wonder where those 121 cases were. If they're Chinese peasants going to the bird market with crappy health care, again it's not something the world needs to get hysterical about getting.

i feel obligated to vote for any and all poll options that include the word "yurt"

otherwise, i'm not terrribly worried, but reserve the right to panic in the future.
