Woah I think you've nailed it! It explains so much. Oh wait, the subject says T.O. not George W. Bush. Nevermind.

Oh jeez, on Election Day eve GW is like TO - I'm not voting tomorrow for
anyone remotely conservative. Thanks Willet, I hate TO too ....

ESPN this morning: There is a clause in his contract that if he is suspended for more than one game for "conduct detrimental to the team" that he forfeits 1.75 million dollars.

Good shit. Hit him in the only place that it hurts.

There was a news item parody on ESPN radio this morning announcing:
"All T O, All the time. We bring you 24 hours of non-stop T O"

At least the time they spend talking about him means there is less time for us to see and hear Tiki (All Tiki, All The Time) Barber.

I wonder what Eagles fans think of this. (Of course, I can find out by tuning in a local sports radio show, but I'm not that curious.

The nearest Mets analogy I can think of is if the Mets released Darryl Strawberry for fighting with Keith Hernandez during that spring training photo shoot.

In football, no salaries are guaranteed. Releasing a player absolves the team of their obligaiton toward him.

I think it's more complicated than that, else every non-contender would just release their expensive free-agent-to-be players near the end of the year.

But easier than releasing a star baseball player with a long-term contract during spring training.

I realize that that's a significant difference between Darryl and Owens.

But I was really wondering about the non-financial aspect: a winning, popular team deciding to get rid of its best player. What do the fans think?
Back in 1987, or whatever year that was, I would have been very pissed if the Mets just released Darryl Strawberry.

I don't think the Owens/Straw analogy holds up, but you're right, I can't think of a better one. There is just no analogy for that idiot.

Maybe Bonds/Kent if the result had been releasing one of them? That doesn't hold up either. At least neither of them went overboard bashing the other in the media. Football get hurt here because there is so much time between games for the talking heads to yell and scream and throw things. I'm sure they did half an hour on SportsCenter on Owens.

Cerainly, but football is stupid.

One, baseballers have a longer shelf life, and tend to to take three years of minor league investment and another three of gradual improvements, whereas the return on footballers is relatively immediate and shorter-term.

Two, football teams are constrained by salary caps. Releasing a headache leads to opportunities for new stars.

Three, one shedding ninth of team is can turn their fortunes around faster than one 22nd of a team, generally speaking.

Players are more disposeable for a number of reasons.

I don't know if Eagles fans feel this way, but I don't think that team was going anywhere until McNabb's injury is healed anyway.

You would think the Eagles could have found a suitor to take TO off their hands though.

Nobody wants to deal with his bullshit. He's guaranteed a string of one-year contracts for the rest of his career. Speaking of M&MD (in another thread), they had a decent theory: Owens and Moss team up next year on the Raiders.

Terrell Owens is one of the few players that could make Randy Moss look like a true "team" player.
